Outward tourism is reaching new heights. Visitor numbers to Ireland are not down by much, but there has been a catastrophic decline in domestic tourism.

Wholesale electricity prices fell by 2.0% in the month to September 2025 and were 16.2% lower than September 2024. source

Yet domestic retail electricity prices continue to rise . . .

Government is also floating the idea of running an extension lead to Spain. That's on top of the extension lead to France (est. cost €1 billion) and another to the UK. (MaresConnect est €500 million+). Changed to million h/t Charlie

I think you meant €500 million+ for MaresConnect rather than €500billion+ but I see it is now estimated to cost €1 billion privately funded " to ensure our energy security".

If I was looking for an example of an oxymoron I doubt I could top one that includes the words privately funded and energy security.

I will watch the outcome of this in the UK with interest: Market-wide half hourly settlement: Vital to making new energy work

There were roughly 38 million smart meters installed in UK households at the end of 2024, each with the potential to share meter readings with suppliers on a half-hourly basis. That half-hourly capability is essential to making the most of the UK’s renewable generation capacity.

Unlike with fossil fuels, we can’t decide when we want to get electricity from resources like the sun and wind, because they are dependent on factors like weather and time of day. This means that at some times we are likely not to have enough renewable electricity available to meet demand, and at others are likely to have too much.

Through a combination of battery storage and adapting the way consumers use electricity we can overcome that challenge by building more flexibility into the energy system, but this second part requires data

Do you have time to monitor prices every 30 minutes? Unless you are rich, quite a dilemma, when its dark and freezing cold outside (no wind, no sun), you have babies or elderly folks to care for and need heating.

I know exactly where that happened and as you say in the past it was curlew and snipe nesting sites.

In the late 1970s, after 'global cooling' armageddon science fell out of fashion, a well-oiled machine comprised of billionaire-funded NGOs, the MSM, Hollywood, woke Wall Street, and a robust fact-checking / censorship cartel - started pushing a cult narrative about the planet's imminent demise in a hellish inferno of global warming. They've blamed everything from cow farts and Taylor Swift's private jet to two-stroke chainsaws, petrol-powered cars, and whatever else these climate Marxists wanted banned - and forced people into authoritarian bullshit like 'electric stoves only' and '15 minute cities' and 'eat the bugs,' etc.

Now, as data centers are coincidentally projected to need record amounts of electricity, Bill Gates has changed his mind about all of that.

Since he owns a 27% stake in OpenAI which needs massive amounts of power to run their data centers, climate change is fading out of favor fast.

    Wonder why?

"AI is projected to dramatically increase global energy consumption over the next decade, with the energy demands of data centers expected to more than double by 2030.""Microsoft made a $10B+ multi-year investment into OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT) - positioning MSFT as a platform power in the AI race."

Interesting timing, Gates public change of mind in the run-up to the UN COP in Brazil. Guess he is tiered of loosing money on breakthrough energy and beyond meat. It's not the only source of problems to the cause. More seriously for us though the lunatics that run the EU are getting told back off.

US and Qatar threaten EU with LNG stoppage over sustainability law (google translate)

In a joint letter to EU states, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Qatar's head of department, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, sharply criticize the planned sustainability law. It is, according to their conclusion, a risk to the economic strength of the continent. The two ministers point out that the EU can hardly secure its energy policy without stable gas supplies. The Financial Times and Bloomberg also report on the letter, which puts Brussels under pressure to avoid a trade conflict.

Also, economies are starting to stall and some go into recessionary phases. That will have a big effect on the Green movement, as most of the measures they propose, at best, do nothing to enhance economic health, and probably have a net negative effect globally.

Did the IPCC deliberately mislead the public on sea level rises. Their models led to claims of future catastrophic rises in sea levels due to human activity. But they didn't need to use models when there are 60 years of real world tide gaugements. Strangely enough they don't produce the same catastrophic forecasts according to a peer reviewed study published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering.

"A number of studies and scientific bodies have measured sea-level rise beginning in 1993, since that’s when satellite imaging became available, and found that there has been a dramatic acceleration in sea level rise over the past 30 years. But Voortman explains that, once periodic fluctuations are taken into account, the effect dissipates. Sea levels were in a “trough” in 1993 and a “peak” in 2020."

So the study found that the IPCC cherry picked data to further it's agenda, and that for the small number of stations that showed marked increases in sea level they were surrounded by other stations that didn't record any rises leading to the view that they were almost always caused by local events such as earthquakes, extensive construction of post glacial events.

So is the tide going out on this alarmist agenda?

    Say it ain't so Joe

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

But Roderick just told us that hospital admissions go up 8% in Ireland when the temperatures hit 22C or higher

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭Pa ElGrande

Except, the opposite is true, coldest months of the year see most overcrowding, unless you are in Limerick where is is year round: January 2025: worst month for hospital overcrowding on record - INMO

So is the tide going out on this alarmist agenda?

Despite the ramping of eNGO press releases in advance of the UNs annual COP jolly, this time in Brazil, this is very much the case: Climate plans don't limit dangerous warming, UN says ahead of COP

The End of Paris? – Climate Scepticism
Most countries are not even going through the motions of setting pretend targets that they have no hope of meeting. That’s how little they care. Though the EU, riven with political discontent, is still arguing over how ambitious to make their commitment. By the time the US is officially out (Jan 2026), the EU may be back in.

António Guterres will be retiring as head of the UN soon, with nothing to show for his efforts (except a fat pension). What is the UNs key mission and why so many wars (Ukraine/Russia, Israel, Sudan, Nigeria (Muslims slaughtering Christians) . . . It envisaged role in 1945 was never about climate.

The UN IPCC is, as its founder Maurice Strong had always intended, a political and not a scientific body. It is pursuing a partisan, self-serving and in some respects scientifically disreputable course. It has a direct, financial vested interest in prophesying doom. After multiple decades it is scraping the bottom of the barrel and the next climate report will feature Dr Friederike Otto of Imperial College whose method, known as simply ‘attribution’, is arguably unscientific, and only of any use in generating climate fake news stories. The former New Zealand Prime-minister Jacinda Arden is a contender for Guterres job, she is very much in the climate alarm camp, her climate policies have been undone since her departure from New Zealand. At this point the UN may want a change of direction.

What a surprise. More utter and absolute BS from these clowns.

The Greens in Ireland have been an utter failure and only succeeded in making the majority of people's lives more difficult.

Labour hits record low as Greens rise gaining support in London, new poll shows

We have to keep an eye on UK politics. There may be a few more years to go to an election, in recent years the UK has gone through prime-ministers in fairly quick succession, support for Conservatives and Labour has fallen to the extent that Greens are starting to come in to contention to capture urban left wing votes. It appears in the recent Welsh elections that Labour voters strategically switched to Plaid Crymru to deny Reform a seat. This tactic if carried forward to deny Reform may potentially give Greens enough seats to hold balance of power in a future UK parliament coalition.

What happens in Ireland depends on how the Social Democrats fare in future, they pull from the same vote pool as the Greens.

As someone who has a interest in wild birds specifically curlews I am aware of three nests of curlews all in roughly two square mile area this summer and in two cases foxes took the chicks and in the third case both the adult and chicks were killed by a fox in the middle of the day witnessed by the land owner. Foxes must have trebled in numbers in the last ten years. All other ground nesting birds in the area are being wiped out in the same manner. Local farmers had to stop breeding their sheep or got out of them completely as their lamb crop was being decimated.

I guess once all their food supply is completely wiped out hunger will force them to move on. Unless something is done at national level to cull the number of foxes a.s.a.p. the future looks bleak for all ground nesting birds as the fox is on top of the food chain - his only enemy is an armed human.

Wind turbines are stationary but the fox is transient and covers a huge area - no comparison really.

Law of unintended consequences. Few farms or households keep chickens compared to the past, one of the main incentives to keep foxes in check gone, combined with farmers liability concerns (land preserved, fur & feather) plus restrictions on hunting with hounds has meant the fox has expanded range to roam compared to the past. Back in the 1950s, men in my local local parish formed a coursing club, they had no hares in the area, they went to Galway, netted hares and started a breeding program which they managed up until the late 70s. Last hare netting done around here maybe a decade ago they caught foxes and no hares. So yeah, that population has been left to it's own devices with no active population management, likewise the deer population is expanding across the country, the deer was not an animal we had in this area when I was growing up, in the past decade sightings have been more common.

It appears many corporates are dropping out of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). I noticed many Irish companies claim it on their web sites, however, when I look in the target dashboard I don't see all of said companies listed, paperwork must have been delayed, there are only 141 records for Ireland and some are "Commitment removed". Seems like many Irish companies are practicing "green washing" 😏

Electricity Supply Board (ESB), Energia, Glanbia, Musgraves are status "Commitment removed"

Teflon Michàel off over to yearly climate apocalypse summit in Brazil (despite the daggers out for him). FFFG would miss him for things like this because, as we all know, climate summits require an awfully lot of mindless, meandering nonsense talk, of which Micháel has a great talent for.

Whatever happend all the 2030 targets of the last few years? Now they on about 2040 this and 2040 that. Just shows that belief in climate change requires a very short term memory (and a great imagination)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,598 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

It seems like some of them have pulled out using the excuse that they believe SBTI is green washing while green washing themselves. Like a lot on emissions you could not make it up, yet continuously they do.

I thought his solution to climate change was to continue building data centres and to turn the countryside into an industrial estate to power them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭Pa ElGrande

The Green party made an attempt to try become relevant to the Irish public, this time using the presidential election as the pretext to insert themselves into the media. When every major party has a climate policy, there is nothing to distinguish them from the crowd except their ideological adherence to the cause at the expense of everybody else.

I am thinking we need to bring back brown envelopes stuffed with cash to get infrastructure projects moving, it would probably be cheaper. Everything is so gummed up in bureaucracy, hardly anything gets done and instead of making a few quid tax free they extract the money legally in project cost overruns.

Found this and its interesting to say the least…

Did you know that after about 15 years, solar panels lose their effectiveness and are no longer useful, after which they go to waste.

However, this waste is not like ordinary garbage, it is incredibly toxic and poses a significant risk to the environment. In fact, solar panel waste is 300 times more harmful than nuclear waste, and its disposal requires a costly and specialized method. Unfortunately, many countries send this toxic waste to poorer nations.

This issue is only going to get worse as by 2030, we will have 8 million tons of "green" waste, and by 2050, that number will balloon to a staggering 80 million tons of solar panel waste that will likely have reached the end of their lives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,311 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

Sounds like absolute nonsense to me. Did you find that on a Facebook post RE the toxicity? Source?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,655 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

That's all entirely incorrect. Their life span is 25-30 years. At that point around 90% of them can be recycled. So care to point to what incredibly toxic material is involved? You realise how toxic gas, oil and coals are to the environment, right?

Also care to share where you read this claim? Also why exactly did you post it before doing some due diligence?

    what a load of cock……………..really.

there was a link on reddit this morning, apparently 100,000 trees were felled in the amazon to make way for a new road to entertain these clowns at their "climate" meeting. How many years in 8 miles of rainforest did they obliterate ? The hypocrisy around this topic is unbelievable, not just now, but in general. Maybe there will be a giganctic earthquake to suck these ghouls down into dantes inferno - with no such luck. And yet, the sheeple still follow.

Was it not london / paris or somewhere a while back they were using electric cars to get to the location, but they had to hire in diesel generators or similar to recharge the cars ?

china , india and US are not even there, real heavy hitters. And ireland think they can save the world as usual. Joke. lets just hit the ppl with more taxes, that will help the environment. Swell idea. we'll be the EU punching bag as usual. "Hey paddy, shut up, you dont have a say ". its embarrassing , our politicians are embarrassing to every end , every decade. repugnant, all of them.

our household do a lot around reducing waste / recycling as much as we can, washing plastics etc compost etc. even down to water usage. we've nieghbours with electric cars, house lights on day and night, no brown bins etc - beggars belief. Almost none bar three households walk their kids to local school, takes a third of the time than it does to drive. empty cycle lanes , i could go on and on. Same houses with the Spamazon vans in/out two / three times a day.

and the poxy coffee epidemic - bazillions of cups every year , nobody says a word…."careful now ted, you cant go there". Another covid hangover maybe…..?
