Is it possible to get your full history of your car registrations in Ireland? I looked at the Shannon vehicle registration site but nothing is suggesting you can do so. Is there some sort of freedom of information request you can do?

No, you can't get that data (legally at least).

Is there a particular reason you want it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,788 ✭✭✭degsie

yes, I have a reason but not willing to discuss :). Thanks anyway.

If you make a formal request for your data, by law it has to be given to you since GDPR laws came in, no?

under GDPR he can request HIS data.

previous owners are NOT his data so has no right to access this data.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,417 ✭✭✭extra-ordinary_

Yes but OP is talking about HIS registrations.

    Whaaa?

OP will be back hopefully and clarify. Looks like he wants a list of registrations that his name was recorded against.

Is it a list of all the cars you have owned that you are looking for ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 874 ✭✭✭GSBellew

Oh, I misread that, thought he was looking for previous owners of his car.

If it is all of the cars he has owned that is different.

I can confirm that the information exists, Revenue have it, it is your VRT history which should be linked to your PPS number, (despite it being called VRT history it is not directly linked to vehicle registration tax) any vehicle ever registered in your name at your address or imported in your name under your pps number will be in your VRT history.

How to get the information I do not know, Revenue can access it, but I do not know how you would go about getting them to give you it, an FOI request would be your starting point.

Apologies, I misread "your car registrations" as "your cars registration". I don't see why you wouldn't be entitled to a list of your own cars - presuming it exists in a central database.

To clarify, it's for details of cars I have owned over the years. No interest in other persons data.

    It's an unusual query.

Have you considered other ways of getting information like family photos or garage records ?

If you do go the FOI route I expect there will be a search fee.

Probably a good stating point for you OP:

To request access to NVDF data please follow the instructions below:

    1. Requests for access to NVDF data should be sent to dataanalytics@transport .gov.ie.

    2. When DoT receives a request for data sharing for the NVDF, a form is sent to the requestor asking for details of the fields required and for the legal basis (if personal/sensitive data).

    3. DoT will check if the requested data is available. If not, the requester is informed and the process ends.

    4. If the data is available and is classified as open or non-personal data, the requester is directed towards published open data or is provided with the data.

    5. If the requested data is personal or sensitive then DoT will verify the legal basis provided

    6. If there is no legislative basis for the data then the requestor may discuss other options or DSGA if they wish, but the process ends here and a new process can begin.

    7. If there is a legislative basis, then DoT will then deliberate on whether the data is appropriate to be provided.

    8. If appropriate, the requestor will be asked to provide a detailed DPIA which DoT data governance board and DPU will consider.

    9. No data will be provided until the legal basis and DPIA have been signed off by the DoT data governance board.

    10. If after reviewing the form, access to the data can be granted, then a Data Sharing Agreement (DSA) is drafted and agreed.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

Do you not know what cars you have owned? Or is it specifics like registration numbers you are trying to figure out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,362 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Clearly it's official proof being sought, and not just his own notes.

PPS numbers were never collected when purchasing a car or transferring ownership. Eircodes are in recent years, but they still process transfers without one and with only a basic address.

I think it’s unlikely that there would be an accurate central database showing a a history of vehicles which were registered to an individual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 874 ✭✭✭GSBellew

No, but the wonders of computers you see, they can link things.

You have you, in your name at your address with a PPS number.

The same name at the same address buys a car, computer automatically links car to the PPS number, simple. Even a vague address, the name will guide them to the right address, just like the postman figures it out delivering the logbook.

We now have online transfer of ownership for the public, which requires a PPS number, linked again.

What if there are 3 John Joe Murphys registered at the same address? Happens more often than you think. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,196 ✭✭✭Lenar3556

I think you are making it up as you go along! The online process is new and optional.

The standard transfer of ownership process does not collect a PPSN, and there is little validation criteria of the entry, which is administered by the department of transport (not finance).

It is also important to consider that the registered owner of a vehicle is not necessarily the legal or beneficial owner, so there are limitations as to the data’s value from a revenue perspective.

I'm not, the online process is new to the public, check your log book, it is Revenue Commissioners, the CVO are part of Revenue

John Joe does not tend to register cars or employment.

I know precisely 0 John Joes.

Regardless once people move into the working world and out of the family home, claim hap, fis, opfp, or a myriad of other things the net closes, pay the tax online, insure it (driver number), you think thats only shared to the mobilty app? tax it, the email address, the card holder details.

They know more about you than you do yourself.

I used to work in this area. I’m rusty now, but my memory is the NVDF is searchable using lots of criteria. I’d be surprised if it couldn’t provide an individual’s ownership data.
How an FoI request would go I don’t know.
