How does the 1.4 engine stack up against the 2.0 engine? Specifically looking at the 2017/18 models.

Is it a decent engine option for the A4? I've read it's underpowered, but is that true? Also, when looking at the A4 is the s-tronic gearbox much better than a manual?

Finding it difficult enough to get a petrol to match my needs. Was going for an A3 with the 1.5 TFSI, but in NI diesels rule the roast, especially as I'm wanting a sline or black edition. So widening the search to an A4.

Its not an engine commonly seen in south

It's fine in an A3 anyway. 140bhp is grand for most people. There's plenty of Jap imports to choose from.

If it is the 150bhp ACT engine then it's an excellent and reliable engine, timing belt, no chain.

Thanks, not sure of the code, just browsing through the ads at the minute.

Still haven't picked up something suitable. Now included A3 saloon into my search. I can see that dealers are bringing in lots of fresh 1.0 TFSI A3's (NI based).

I thought they would be underpowered, but they are doing 109bhp. It is faster 0..60 than my current car by 3sec and has a better power/weight ratio of 89hp/T vs 73hp/T.

My driving would be mostly country roads and motorway which initially made me shy away from them.

I suspect that that 1.0 engine will be working hard on the motorway and your fuel economy is going to suffer, won't be a whole lot there for an overtake either. 1.4tsi is a much better engine for that sort of driving.

You'd be surprised. It has a 7 speed DSG so it's well capable of motorway speeds.

I've run 4 x Ford Ecoboost 1.0T engines over the last couple of years.

They are well able for motorway work. The current one (125bhp) sits around 2500rpm in 6th at around 70mph. It's decently refined and it's averaged 56.5mpg too.

The 155bhp version in the Puma (no longer available sadly) were great fun.

I was holding out for a 1.5tfsi in my budget but there isn't many about.

The 35tfsi A4 with the 2.0 ea888 engine would be the one to go for.

Yeah - if opting for an A4 I'd go for the 2.0 probably with an auto box. However, they are quite a bit bigger than the A3 saloon. Plus I'm only doing roughly 5000 miles/year so thought an A3 manual would be a more suitable chariot.
