Gave Strange Jigsaws (no relation to Strange Antiquities) a go last night after Jason Schreier shouted it out on Triple Click with the recommendation that 'if you like puzzle games, just play it - you don't need to know anything else' (paraphrasing, but not much). And yes, that is indeed a good recommendation! Basically a series of increasingly devious jigsaw-based puzzles that have a lot more layers and tricks to them than initially meets the eye. You start with a screen full of puzzles and just have to go from there, and suffice to say there's some pleasant surprises and oddities as you dig in.

Only a fiver on Steam and I believe around 2-3 hours long - I got through the first layer of puzzles in around an hour. The trailer is six seconds long because really that's all you need to know:

Also bought it on Schreier's recommendation, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Glad it gets the JU seal of approval!

Bought this today. I've only had time for the first episode, but it seems like a high quality production. This would be perfect for Netflix TV games.

Finished Keeper last night after playing half of it on Thursday night.

It's such a great little quirky weird thing.

    It's so hard to explain.

Play it, if you can… 😁

Going through my backlog, finished Prey(2017) over the weekend. I thought it started very strongly but went on a bit too long, was absolutely ready for it to end a few hours before it did. I think it’s because the combat/enemies didn’t really evolve - once you’re about halfway through you’ve seen basically everything you’re going to see and it’s just about resource management. On the whole though it’s definitely worth going through if you like immersive sims.

Started Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance last night. I had played it way back when but I think it’s crazy that it never got a sequel. The cutting and zandatsu mechanics are still incredibly fun, as is the parrying. The camera is god awful though - even a sequel that just fixed that would be worth it.

Yeah really enjoying it myself, looking forward to finishing it out this week with the last two episodes.

I’ve only played a bit of it so far, but Ninja Gaiden 4 has Revengence vibes. Not as good IMO, but has that Platinum flair for fast sword combat - possibly more Revengence than classic Ninja Gaiden in some ways.

Will any of you be getting Project Motor Racing at the end of the month? I will for sure.

Quite a milestone. Wouldn't have thought it possible given how strong the 360 performed, but pretty clear why Microsoft are shifting more to just putting their games on every device rather than trying to use their games to sell devices.

Edit: Although actually reading the article, it may be more because Microsoft stopped reporting sales of the 360 before it was officially discontinued, so they're mostly working off estimates.

The 360 had some actual competition. The PS5 on the other hand is only really competing with PC. I read that the industry is worried that Sony haven't managed to translate the lapsed Xbox owners over to PlayStation.

I imagine that they aren't really lapsed Xbox owners but more that people that would traditionally buy later in a consoles life cycle when the system is more affordable.

Weird question but do you know if there's colour blind modes? It's a game I adore but there's always some stages that I just can't parse and are a nightmare to complete for me due to colour blindness.

Edit: just looked it up and it does! Awesome!

A little bit further into Ninja Gaiden 4 now and it’s good fun. It’s been a long time since I played NG Black, but even then you can tell this is more a Platinum joint than a Team Ninja joint. The gameplay is insanely fast paced, with the main character just zipping around the place. The combat is fun and crunchy, but definitely a whole different pace to classic NG and more akin to classic character action games like DMC and Bayonetta. It’s decidedly a 2000s era game in almost every way.

I do think there is maybe a few too many combat options, that dilutes a little of the core NG appeal. There’s a powerful alternate attack mode that uses a gauge to charge, for example, which is a core part of breaking enemy guards. But there’s also a rage mode with a separate gauge, which also changes the functionality of that alternate attack mode, while also having a rage mode within rage mode ultra attack option. Similar deal with defence - a lot of different dodge, guard and parry options. It’s mostly manageable, but pretty busy, which maybe undermines the flow at times.

Not crazy difficult so far, other than the tough purgatory challenges. Lots of items for healing, and you’re constantly healing as you fight due to dropped energy orbs. Not an easy game, but nowhere near NG1 difficult so far anyway.

Took me ages to get it running properly on PC, as some of the upscale options are hidden away and don’t seem to take effect immediately. Still doesn’t run as smoothly as it should given the way it looks, but a pretty consistent 60 FPS at least.

I won't be to play until later. Great to hear that it does have colour blind modes.

Will definitely be playing it in VR as well, hopefully it looks as good as i imagine it should in the headset(avoided playing the demo).

Played the original, Electric Symphony and Remastered tons but still don't think im amazing at it…

Dispatch is an absolute blast. Acting is top notch, story is well written, it's got a great sense of humour, beautifully animated and the core mechanics of the game are surprisingly quite challenging. I'm on Episode 4 and already looking forward to replying it to make different choices and see how the story goes.

Nothing says winding up a generation than that poor state of play.

On the one hand, it was an SoP centered and focused on the Japanese market and from Japanese devs (and entirely in Japanese), so there was never going to be a huge amount to come out of it.

On the other hand though, Sony normally do a decent end-of-year SoP around this time and with their own announcements separate from The Game Awards, so if this is what we're getting instead… not a great sign for 2026.

Still hugely excited for Saros and Wolverine, and I do prefer that they don't just keep announcing games which are coming way off in the distance and instead only revealing things maybe a year out. But would also like some indication as to what's coming down the pipeline in terms of first party studios.

Saros and Wolverine are it for first party Id say. Two first party releases a year seems to be the max that Sony release so I imagine that's 2026 covered. Wouldn't be surprised if the other teams are aiming for the PS6 with team Asobi working on a launch title.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I'd say that's it for the big AAA games, but we might get a few smaller titles too, like maybe the rumoured God Of War 2D metroidvania type of game, or whatever Bluepoint has been working on.

I have just joined the ps5 club as of yesterday after being xbox for 20 years, have not got the series x or s either, still play the one on a weekly basis, just wanted a go at spiderman and the last of us and needed a new console and the ps5 had better offers.

most of my old xbox crew dont play anymore or are down to a few times a year for a game of fifa, only one left who plays almost daily and even he is less and less so as life and kids take hold

Have been buried very deep in Little Rocket Lab for a while now. A gem of a game and it's on Gamepass. Think pixel art Satisfactory. I've finished regular mode and am now on a hard mode run. Can't seem to stop!

Also have Anno 117 predownloaded for tomorrow's release. I may not see sunlight for some time :)

Has it been confirmed Bluepoint was working on anything beyond their cancelled live service game? Crazy that studio was wasted on such a doomed endeavour. But they're a small team so not sure if they have multi-project capacity.

Still, would be very keen to see how they handle an original project - I think they're an amazing team (their Titanfall 360 port was miraculous) cursed with the task of remaking canonical games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I think the rumours were that they may have had two projects on the go; a live service (possibly God of War related) and then likely some form of their usual remake. Seems like they've been hiring recently for athird-person action game. Presumably if they weren't working on some remake as well as the live service game, and if this new game is an original title rather than a remake, we may not see anything from them until the PS6. Which would be a shame obviously, as like you say they're an extremely talented team and I'd very much like to see what they can do with their own original title.

Played 2 hours of Lumines Arise last night and its expectedly fantastic. Can be a bit hard to see /differentiate the blocks in certain levels but not too bad.The soundtrack is great so far.Gonna to try it in VR later.

Saros,GoW 2.5d,Wolverine and Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls would be great for 2026. Marathon might get pushed to 2026 as well(don't have much hope for it).

Not sure if the Venom game still exists.

God knows what state Fairgames is in.

Phantom Blade 0 and Nioh 3 confirmed console exclusives as well.

Intergalactic will probably be PS5 and PS6 at launch. They might actually release PS5 version 6 months before the PS6 launch then offer a sneaky upgrade.

I think their remastering efforts are top notch when it comes to getting old game running and looking as they should but when it comes to adding their own flare to the art they are really bad. The sotc and demons souls remakes take too many liberties and are the obvious product of an art team and dev that either didn't get or care for the original vision or both. Their embellishments range from ruining the atmosphere and look of a game to straight up adding stuff or changing it and adding their own stamp that doesn't fit in with the original games vision.

But I do agree there's a lot of talent there, it's rare to see a company making games so performative with steady frame rates while showing such technical polish. I would really like to see them make an original work with their own artistic vision.

Just played through the first series of levels last night (I remain pretty bad at actually scoring in Lumines!) and while it's as delightful as expected, I'd agree the third of the first four levels was harder to read than the others.

TBH I think it comes with the territory of being given the task of "remaking" a game, especially when you're not the original developer. They probably had no choice but to make changes, and some inevitably do not work (and the music in Demon's Souls was particularly jarring). Any small (let alone major) change to a great game can significantly alter the balance that was achieved first time around. Even adding a few extra, out-of-the-way collectibles to Shadow of the Collossus makes it feel like a different game.

It's why I'd much rather a generous remastering effort of most games than a full-on remake. It's the same with Oblivion recently - it just really doesn't look or feel like the original game anymore despite running the same underlying code.

So yes, there are amazing technicians and artists there - hopefully soon they'll have the chance to not just reimagine iconic games.
