    And look who is back!

Strangely quiet lately with Trumps approval ratings being in the sewer, ruining the country etc, but Pelosi retires and you come back.

    Consistent as always pal.

Trump is obviously the more corrupt, but it doesn't mean the likes of Pelosi haven't made decent money out of their time in office. No politician with the power to sway the market should be able to profit from the same.

I think it's expected that US politicians do well out of office, that's how the US clientelism works, but what's happening now is this president is threatening to bring the whole tent down.

If it makes you feel better (probably not) Prop 50 explicitly states that the new maps expire in 2030 & reaffirms that the California Citizens Redistricting Commission will again assume responsibility for redrawing congressional districts at that time. Both sidesing the issue and framing the Texas chicanery as just a continuation of similar gerrymandering efforts is a skewed representation of the reality here. What Texas has done is an extraordinary escalation that goes beyond the typical mandering protocols.

You cannot call on the Democrats to be the better angels whilst across the aisle the MAGA party runs amok subverting norms and flouting laws. One of the primary reasons that the Democratic party has been at historic lows of approval amongst their own voters is that they’re viewed as impotent, timid, and lacking spine (we know this because pollsters have asked). Although Trump ushered in much of this intemperance with his takeover of the party it was already trending that way. Remember when Scalia died and Obama still had nearly an entire year left in his term but Senate Republicans blocked any vote on his nominee (after recent assurances that they would never do such a thing)? And today we witness Mike Johnson refusing to seat a House Democrat that overwhelmingly won a special election (45 days ago and counting) whilst concocting different excuses for the delay every time he’s asked. For reference Republicans were sworn in within 24 hours of their special elections earlier this year.

One can only imagine if the Democrats had that level of dedicated functional fanaticism just how “annoyed” you would feel. You may have an instinctive compulsion to bothsides all this political mayhem. But ask yourself something. Why is it that observers of many political stripes in Ireland & globally, including many comfortably right of centre, can articulate just how toxic and destructive the MAGA iteration of the Republican party is without muddying the crisis with both sides rationalisations? Sometimes the view from outside the goldfish bowl can be less clouded.

It’s instructive to also keep in mind that it was initially hoped that when the MAGAheads were warned about a potential response from California to counter the Texas scheme that they would back off when they realised there would be no net benefit. Instead we then witnessed the debacle of the Texas governor trying to arrest opposition state legislators to force a quorum and ram through the redistricting map. At that point there’s no reason to expect any kind of reversal or a reason to hang faint hopes on the courts for timely relief. The Democrats needed a clear proportionate response and California obliged.

Then poster was tying the issue of corruption back to Trump, which is the title of the thread...

Cory Booker did the dame thing, tweeted to congratulate Democratic winners in his own state and Virginia, even added some pics. Didn't mention Mamdani.

Mamdani will need eyes in the back of his head for the next 4 years, AOC and Sanders and a few more will support him, the supposed big wigs in the party will be keeping their distance, possibly they'll even undermine him if the opportunity presents itself.

Hard to know is it corporate interests or the country with the most moral army in the worlds lobbying group which is the motivation behind this. Probably a bit of both.

The main thing for me with respect to the redistricting conversation is that Newsome showed some of what has been sorely lacking amongst the Democrats and that's a meaningful response to the GOP sense that they can do whatever they want.

Prop 50 only appeared because of what Texas was going and instead of just giving news interviews or senate speeches about it, Newsome responded in kind yet with the added fact that he gave the people of his state a say in what he was proposing. Gerrymandering is an issue, and has been, throughout the hole of the United States but here, Newsome impressively played the GOP at their own game.

It is being speculated that many Republicans now recognise that Trump is cooked, that the files will eventually get released and that it’s best for the future of the party to get ahead of it and turn their back on him.
It would be something to see trump finally faces consequences.

Another reason why Trump is happy to pump the idea that he could run again. With that threat ge has the ability to control the party.

American jobs and economic numbers released today.

1M jobs have been lost this year.

October losses were highest for that month since 2003

20-24 age group unemployment is 9%, the highest in nearly 10 years

Credit Card debt is at record high and bank reserves are at their lowest values since Covid forcing the Federal Reserve to fund them to the tune of 120B

    So much winning.

After the initial tariffs both exporters and importers absorbed what they could, but gravity is taking hold.

Out transatlantic business will take a knock, but at least our businesses can pivot elsewhere, and even some US companies may invest more here as a lifeboat.

I don't believe that he'll ever face consequences but by God I would love to be proven wrong on that. It would be a great great day for humanity to see that absolute scumbag finally face accountability.

I’d say this is only the beginning.

And they will pivot and blame Biden.

The dangerous criminal that the White House created and posted the above video about....has just been found Not Guilty!!

This is the Sandwich Guy, who threw a subway sandwich at a DHS trooper, triggering the above arrest, attempts at felony assault charges, which dropped and dropped til it reached misdemeanour level, and still ended in a 5 day trial. In which he's now been acquitted. Below account on both twitter and bluesky has been running a very funny live feed on trial last few days.

Yes yes you have caught me out yet again.

Ive been petrified to post here due to all you mentioned. Ive been watching, waiting patiently for an opportunity and only now have I the confidence to post as I have some distraction about Pelosi.😂

Or perhaps I have been avoiding this thread for other more logical reasons.

some rep from a drugs company collapsed in the oval office today, and i'm not sure trump has any idea, or cares what's happening behind him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,196 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

The logical reasons being you have nothing positive to say about Trump, so you naturally wait to say something about a Democrat.

    Makes sense.

yes, the red half by a massive ratio. Stop trying to both sides it when the Republicans are foaming in the mouth at the prospect of repealing the Voting Rights act, and women's right to vote beyond that.

feels like this could be the iconic photo from this term…. It really says a lot

A genuine good amount of respect should go to Dr Oz, to speaker's left as he talks. He goes to guy collapsing and helps him to ground and checks on him.

Also interesting to see RFK Jr's reaction, which seems to be, get the hell away from.this as quick as possible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,438 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

What for? Exhibiting a basic level of human decency? Is that what MAGA has to do to be worth of respect now?

    Yes Dr Oz did well.

Strange reaction by JFK Jr allright, but lets give him the benefit of the doubt after both his Father and uncle were assassinated in public.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Patser

    It's a start!!!

And it's a bit beyind human decency, he did actually show a level of competence in how he lowered the guy, then also slowly lowered his head to the ground while talking to him. The other photo of Trump standing at table looking lost, has the patient's legs raised in the background. He knew what he was doing. Give a little credit for that.

Seriously? You expect anyone to believe that he actually thought his life was in danger in the Oval Office?

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-oval-office-glp1-collapse-b2860200.html The oral version of the medications is expected to be offered for as low as $149 per month, once approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The injectable GLP-1 medications will drop to $245 per month for patients on Medicare or Medicaid who utilize them to treat medical conditions such as diabetes that have already been approved by the FDA.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. praised the deal for giving those who cannot afford the drugs a chance to utilize it.

“Obesity is a disease of poverty. Overwhelming, and these drugs have only been available for people who have wealth,” Kennedy said.

Dr. Oz projected that by this time next year, he expects Americans to collectively lose “135 billion pounds.”

A lot to take in there. A disease of poverty , ie. not being able to afford good high protein food. How affordable are these prices to someone on welfare ?

One is reminded of George Orwell (he of Down and out in Paris and London)

“Would it not be better if they spent more money on wholesome things like oranges and wholemeal bread or if they even, like the writer of the letter to the New Statesman, saved on fuel and ate their carrots raw? Yes, it would, but the point is that no ordinary human being is ever going to do such a thing. The ordinary human being would sooner starve than live on brown bread and raw carrots. And the peculiar evil is this, that the less money you have, the less inclined you feel to spend it on wholesome food. A millionaire may enjoy breakfasting off orange juice and Ryvita biscuits; an unemployed man doesn't. Here the tendency of which I spoke at the end of the last chapter comes into play. When you are unemployed, which is to say when you are underfed, harassed, bored, and miserable, you don't want to eat dull wholesome food. You want something a little bit 'tasty'. There is always some cheaply pleasant thing to tempt you.”
― George Orwell, The Road to Wigan Pier

    Note : 135 billion pounds = €154Bn
