…..yea right ! And in 20 or 30 years from now when it will no longer be cool to be an climate change warrior the usual suspects will try to convince us that climate change is no longer an issue because of positive actions taken by a tiny minority of the global population like driving electric cars, flooding a few bogs, etc. etc. and some will be gullible enough to believe it.

Now while on the subject ……I often wondered what caused the last ice age and the many previous ones and furthermore what caused our planet to gradually get warmer again.??

What caused the mini ice age that lasted from roughly the 14th to 19th century?

What caused the medieval warm period that lasted from roughly 900 AD to 1300 AD ?

The inconvenient truth is that our climate is always changing, it fact by it's very nature it can never ever stand still. Sometimes change happens over thousands of years other times over hundreds, change could be local or worldwide

Was it Hitler that said in his book Mein Kampf that people could be induced to believe a colossal lie because they could not imagine that someone could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.

'but your honour, people are always dying so who are you to say me killing someone was wrong?'

    Exactly.

Cognitive dissonance is more widespread that one would think.

The argument from the climate scientists is that we're rapidly speeding up the process with our emissions. Fossil fuels are finite anyway, probably no harm to be switching to renewables.

When I was a young feller an ice age was the thing that was going to wipe us all out.

In a few hundred years or a thousand years will Hitler be considered a bit of a cool dude like Genghis Khan? Do all evil rulers end up being revered?

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

It will take more than a few thousand years for the current prime minister of israel to be considered cool or be revered. I couldn't bring myself to print his evil name or use capital letters

    Are UFOs actually military aircraft.

All UFO means is Unidentified Flying Object, so the unidentified object might be a balloon or a kite or a bird, or in very recent times a drone. Some people think Unidentified means aliens, which is not the case. If you want a real head scratching UFO story check out the Tic Tac / Nimmitz sighting 2004 with Dave Fravor (US pilot). Still unidentified, whatever it was.

If social media was to disappear tommorow what would happen to the world.

Some are, others are as simple as airplanes.
Here is an example from someone who sells himself as a former government insider getting fooled by an irrigation circle.

A recent thing being misidentified are starlink satellites that reflect sun on their underside.

From a sci-fi perspective. Will 200 years from now be more Star Trek or Fallout?

We are living in a Brave New World though a small number of people who already have more money than anyone would ever need are trying to turn it into 1984.

The Greeks reckoned a benevolent dictatorship was the best government, though power corrupts. The EU is probably good as compared to the US where corporations rule (you better have money) or China where it's State control (you better have god social credit)

Star Trek is technobabble. Science Fantasy. Teleporters are murder etc. The prime directive is more like a guideline. Not going to happen. But yes global GDP is enough to give every human a decent life if an aeroplane full of psychopaths didn't keep hoarding money.

    How did life start ?

Chemical reactions to provide the building blocks are demonstrable. Concentrating them by providing catalytic surfaces on rocks or black smokers or ponds are all probable. Tides were way bigger and more frequent back then too so lots of churning.

But how did the first self replicating molecule form ? And was it RNA ?

And how did pathways necessary for photosynthesis form ?

The plane full of physchos aren't hoarding money in fairness. Their net worth is based on what they'd get if they sold everything. A lot of it being notional stock value.

Bezos for example employs twenty five odd thousand in Amazon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,776 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

and how many businesses has amazon destroyed over its lifetime, and how many has it sent to the dole over that time? then of course theres amazons impeccable treatment of its workers! amazon is just a giant rent seeker, sucking the life out of economies all over the planet, and ultimately helping to accumulate wealth for a very small percentage of humans, so, is it really all that good!

When the hair on your head just keeps growing, why does body hair stop growing at a certain length? How does body hair know that it has been cut and it needs to start growing again?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 54,455 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

AFAIK the follicles on your body grow hair for a certain length of time and then let it fall out; so it never gets past a certain length. the follicles on your head just keep growing.

    Teleporters are murder etc.

i've often thought that teleporters sound like a good thing superficially, but would be really bad in practice.

e.g. something bad happens somewhere in the world. every f'ing ghoul in the world transports there to video it for their social media page (i recently learned there is a term for this sort of person - a 'clout goblin')

some lunatic leader in a democratic country manages to foment a stampede on the main government building in their capital city. every mouthbreathing oik with guns tattooed on their body teleports there to join in.

    etc. etc.

There is some evidence that the final length of your hair(s) is down to genetics, hair strands will get to a certain point and then fall off, it won't keep growing indefinitely. How long that is varies from person to person.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,174 ✭✭✭Badly Drunk Boy

The lunatic leader could just get Colm Meaney to lock on the protestors and transport them into the sea.

Then people with the werewolf syndrome, their hair just keeps growing, the genes must have gone wonky.

Back in about 1946/47, Bertrand Russell, mathematician, philosopher & peace activist actually suggested that it would be morally less disastrous for the US to destroy the USSR before they developed nuclear weapons, as once both sides had them it would inevitably follow that a global nuclear war would break out.

And how do they get to that total? I'm a regular on the site but only have a modest post count. It baffles me how much time you'd need to spend posting to reach the umpteen thousand figure that a lot of posters have.

There are lots of women with hair that touches the ground and then some, and they're not 4ft tall.

Easiest way to realise the value is to use their assets as collateral to get a loan.

Best bit is if the assets fall in value you can hand them back to the bank and still keep what you've squirrelled away from the loan.
