Is it possible to buy a vodafone prepay phone without choosing a plan. As far as I know the Redmi phones are not locked with vodafone and I was hoping to use my eir SIM with it. So if thats the case do I choose a new number with the purchase and just use my eir SIM and number?

You can usually look it up on CeX to see if it's network unlocked

    Yes it's unlocked.

Yeah if there's no Vodafone variant for it available on CeX then you should be okay

Is there any particular reason you want to buy it in Vodafone? Have you tried Amazon, Harvey Norman etc.?

If you're trying to get the switch offers, you'd have to get a free SIM from 48 or Lyca first and use that to switch it to Vodafone to get the offer.

Ok so get the free sim from 48 then switch to vodafone to buy the prepay phone, the offer is 100€ off. And then put my eir sim in. Just looking at the 48 free sim, do I have to activate it?

Yeah you activate it when you get it, it'll have a new phone number, you don't need to buy a plan for it. It will then be able to receive SMS to port to Vodafone.

    Here's Lyca Mobile also - https://www.lycamobile.ie/en/freesim/

Just a little confused, I want to use my eir SIM in the vodafone new phone and to get the discount I need to get a free sim and use the free sim number as a way to get the discount, so on that information alone can I buy the vodafone phone,in other words do I need to activate the free sim and port to vodafone if the vodafone comes unlocked.

Vodafone won't give you the discount without porting a number to them so that's why you need the free SIM, as you don't want to port your actual Eir number over to Vodafone. You'll need an unlocked phone to receive the SMS from Vodafone for porting.

The switching deals can be sometimes very good and other times they can be had for a very similar price on Amazon etc.

As long as the phone is listed on CeX and there is no Vodafone variant on CeX, you can just insert your Eir SIM into the phone when you get it.

Ok so they won't sell me the phone till they port the free sim number?

They'll sell you the phone but you won't get the switching offer of '€100 off'. Have you checked Amazon for the phone you want?

Amazon only seem to have the 4G version of it for €105, so the Vodafone switch deal seems to be the way to go

So once I give the store or on line the free sim details it should cost 100€? ( Also the store say it's a 8gb/128 gb spec)

Sorry for asking so many questions but I normally buy from Amazon or mstore

It doesn't say which it is on Vodafone's website - 4GB/8GB, but if you saw in store it says 8GB. It should be €80 with the switch offer. Is your current phone network unlocked? so you can put the free SIM into it to get the SMS Vodafone will send for porting. Some Vodafone stores insist on you buying credit with a phone afaik but you don't have to online.

I'll see if I can do it online

Seems like on line you have to choose one of 3 plans, I'll go into the store when I get the free sim. It's impossible to get someone to speak to on the phone with vodafone and after an hour I got some one who still can't verify the ROM that comes with the phone

You have to choose a plan but you can choose to not pay to activate it now.

It's the RAM you need confirming, not ROM. The model number is 25078RA3EE according to the energy rating.

    Opps sorry RAM.

After the process of getting a new number, filling in the vodafone online details and paying for the new phone,I got this message, so I'm out of pocket at the moment, I haven't been issued with an order number and it's quite impossible to get someone in vodafone to solve the problem. Vodafone can't tell me why this happened and suggest I repeat the process.

It just didn't go through so they didn't take any money and will release the hold on your card, it'll show back on your card in a few days.

I don't know why that error would happen, that's strange. Give the sales number they've shown a ring to make a new order, the sales number shouldn't be too busy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,027 ✭✭✭horse7

They said I would not be able to do it again on line, but couldn't explain why. I'll wait till I get my money back and try again. I may have to get another free SIM card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

Can the sales team not do it over the phone? The order didn't go through so the SIM port shouldn't go ahead.

Vodafone have been doing this (cancelling web orders without any justifiable reason) for years.
I'd hazard a guess that there'd be no issue if buying at full price.

Did you pick eSIM or physical SIM?, I had a prepay eSIM order not go through before

Which network were you attempting to port from to Vodafone? Vodafone for a long time were cancelling orders from Lyca, 48 and Tesco when there were offers like E100 off a prepaid phone but if you were porting say an Eir or 3 sim it wasn't a problem.
