If 35 year old Conan isn't fit in 2 years we won't have 2 top class 8s. An awful lot of rugby players don't make it to 35, assuming anyone will is naive. The fiasco w Sexton should have made it obvious that not developing the players we have is a mistake, regardless of whether they are as good as or better than the incumbent. Ringrose is not as good as BOD, why is he playing 13? That's not a very useful question.

Childish? A child wouldn't suggest that a 40yo would be still playing international rugby.

And it is up to the younger lads to take the jerseys off the older lads.

Conan is still very much at the top of his game. It is up to Coombes to grab any opportunity he gets with both hands to prove he is up to that level

It is clear from the fact he's not even in the squad this time around, and Brian Gleeson was supposed to be, that he hasn't so far.

Coombes will be 29 at the next World Cup. He's not exactly a young buck anymore either.

But its something we have rarely if ever done in Ireland. Just said Player x youre 32 now. we'll just move on to the 22-26 year old as at the world cup in 2/3 years time if we give them the game time now they'll be far more likely to be in a better position than you

we dont move players on enough, sometimes it shouldnt be the younger players taking the jersey off the older but you just remove the jersey from the older guy and see how much the younger guy can give.

Coombes will be 29 at next world cup so should be around his peak. thats not a bad thing

He has to get a call up first before he can grab any chance.

    Doesn't look like its happening

29 would be prime age by the way

There's absolutely a conversation to be had about that in a general (see Henderson, Iain) however, in this instance, the player people seem to think should be phased out before the next World Cup is still among the best in his position in the Northern Hemisphere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,051 ✭✭✭50HX

He shouldn't be phased out but here's mad suggestion....have a look at developing other players.

Imagine if the developed player plays better than him...what a headache when coming to picking the RWC squad

How do you know this isn't the plan with Gleeson?

As I've said, Coombes should be more concerned about Gleeson than he should about who's in front of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,990 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

But will be he be still among the best in his position in the NH in 2 years time? We don’t know.

Now, you could say that of any player. But it is obviously a bigger concern as that player ages.

When you add in that we have an older squad across the board, I think it’s reasonable to suggest that we need to start seeing some freshness in the squad as a whole.

There’s a way broader point here than just Coombes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,743 ✭✭✭ersatz

It's the job of the coach to ensure that the squad is viable next year as well as next week. Sure, players need to make their case and the coaches don't seem to think Coombes has done enough, and he's not as good as Conan from what I've seen of but if Conan were to retire next year or the following year the coaches can't find themselves in a situation where there is no-one to replace him. It might seem academic but this coach actually created a situation for himself where he didn't have a viable substitute for a 37 year old Sexton. You can blame the players for not taking the jersey off him but I'm looking a the coach in that situation.

I never said it wasn't & would hope they open up things once the rwc seeding has been assured.

You've referenced Coombes worrying about Gleeson as much as Conan & i don't see the logic to it.

Coombes can't control who Farrell picks & id say at this stage isn't bothered by it or Gleeson getting a call up.

    Mod: Post edited and warned.

Possibly not, but is there not also a valid question as to whether Coombes will even be Munster's best option in 2 years time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,927 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

I'm referencing Coombes worrying about Gleeson because it's a conversation about Coombes getting more time ahead of building a squad for the next World Cup…

Honestly I'm trying to have a conversation with you, and yet you seem to be ignoring everything that is being said.

It is clear to me that the coaching staff see Gleeson as the next one up, as things stand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,990 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

And there’s also a scenario where Coombes may not be Munster’s best option in 2 years time but is still a useful player for Ireland.

For me the New Zealand game has been over analysed. I'll give you 3 reasons we lost, none of which blames a player,

1 Hunger. Sport is all about how much you want a victory. Indeed you can be a significantly inferior side and destroy the opposition if you have hurt and hunger in your heart! That's partly why Munster beat Leinster. Many might have seen Coombes raise his fist as he ran off during the sin bin. That's hunger!

    2) Fitness and GAME time. Seriously lacking with many. They need game time together badly. Also a little hangover from the provincials was evident to me.

    3) A home game played 1000s of miles away from home. We shouldn't be agreeing to these mini events in USA. Let New Zealand nominate their home game's there if they want, why should we!!

Coombes is an example, Farrell doesnt trust Cian P or Nick for example, if they can't get meaningful minutes over the years v a tier 2,Italy & a Welsh in free fall then where are we going. Those 2 don't necessarily have to be better than their counterparts

Look at the centre set up, outside of the 3 usuals who else bar Stu gets minutes.

I thought Farrell deserved a summer call up, he didn't. Henshaw gets injured & he calls him up then whereas most of us thought Forde/Gavin were next up. Baffling considering Farrell saw none of them in the flesh on the summer tour

We've a 24 year old who played 15 last sat yet every inch written about him (not only here) says he should be in the centre but he can't even get a consistent run at club level at 12 mainly due to his versatility.

The real sign of where this management are at was shown with the 3 lads in the 6nations.

A minor case could be made for Murray considering Casey's injury but Healy...seriously,esp after Boyle went well v Wales & the CC semi final performance by Healy confirmed what a bad call it was for the 6N's.

It has often been said that it's harder to get off the team or out of the squad than it is to get into it...its looking that way

Leave out the "Jack the Lion" stuff.

i would be surprised if we did open things up that much when seeding has been assured(its as good as already anyway as its very unlikely we'll drop out of the top 6)

i agree on Coombes not worrying about Gleeson. no reason for him to

Of course its been over analysed. most games are. I dont think hunger was a factor. Fitness/Game time certainly was but why then pick so many guys who were clearly lacking in game time and not pick guys who're in form for provinces.

We'll continue to play these games in Chicago/United States or anywhere else if IRFU continues to clear millions from the games We will always do it if we can still keep 3 games in Aviva as well.

Do you have to be the best option at provincial level to get called into the national squad. Because that's not the case now nor has it been before

JGP is a case in point

Are ya trying to wind me up? An alternative 8 so Doris can move to 7? I've pretty much derailed this thread naming a certain number 8 who fits the bill 🤣

We keep picking the 2 most out of form 12s is the issue. Until last week of course and McCloskey got injured unfortunately as he was playing well. It took another injury for Tom Farrell to get called up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭✭almostover

We keep failing at WCs due to over reliance on certain players. We end up flogging the same guys in the group stages, they invariably get injured and then in the QFs we have to parachute guys in who've had very little game time with the national squad. Or like in the last WC we flog Sexton and leave him on the pitch to the dying end even though he's crippled and can hardly move. Why? Because we put no minutes into Jack Crowley prior to that game when we had chances to against weaker opposition.

What are we going to learn by playing Doris at 8 and Conan in the 20 shirt vs. Japan at the weekend? How will that help us build squad depth?

We keep doing the same thing over and over in each WC cycle and yet we expect different results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭✭almostover

Nobody's saying the likes of Conan should be phased out. Were just questioning what is the benefit to Ireland long term by playing both him and Doris against the likes of Japan in autumn internationals? Or both of them vs Wales and Italy in 6N games we should be winning at our ease.

Beirnes red card recinded. Rightly so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,927 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

    Common sense prevails.

Can understand why it looked bad but I don't know how anybody was looking at that and thought there was a high degree of danger…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭typhoony

Right now Farrell is probably not looking further ahead than a few months building for the 6 nations, coaches who are ex-players also have in their dna a next game mentality. This short-sighted view will cause us to fail again at the next WC as well as the the reasons you out-lined already. It seems strange that the international player management is managed very carefully at provincial level but that goes out the window during the WC where opportunities to rest players in certain games is ignored.

It wasn’t a “noticeable drop off”…it was ONE game and his first game in 3 months, even then It wasn’t that bad a performance, still around a 7/10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,562 ✭✭✭✭phog

What player are you talking about because I named no one in my post?

Do you disagree with the point that after their prime and the older a player gets the more you'll see their performance drop off?

The player I mentioned in my comment you replied to that would fit the bill of being over 35.

On many occasions yes, but using as an excuse every time an older player has a poor performance is just tiresome now…
