Liam Cahill dropped players and could afford to as he had elite underage winners available to him and will have a handfull more for 2026. You are deluding yourself if you think it's like for like. We have struggled to win any national title bar one for a decade at underage and the conveyor belt has not been there. The Fitzgibbon Cup of the last decade speaks to how much our dominance at all levels underage had declined compared to the previous 10/15 years. That is not to knock any of those players from our county. It is just many of them are good but not quite good enough to match what has gone before. I would also not knock Richie Reid one of the star players as always in this years Club championship .Killian Doyle was outstanding yesterday for Emeralds in the under 21B semi against Tullaroan and is one of a handful on the current co panel with a Fitzgibbon medal.Don't follow your logic. I am very hopeful for this years 20s and minors and also heartened to hear of the players brought into this years senior panel. Your comments about Richie Leahy are well wide of the mark also and I know the club are delighted to have him home from Australia. He was one of the best underage players of his time and injury plagued him from 21 onwards and it never quite happened for him which is a real pity.

not as simple as that really. Cahill dropped one of the best corner backs of recent times and replaced him with a player no one had heard of. That player will win an all star this week. On the other hand most of those Kiladangan lads weren’t up to it so it was an easy enough choice. And he did have good material too. But he had brought on O’Mara, Morgan, Stakelum, Tynan, Connolly during the last bad few years too

He is also trying to say to be fair underage success doesnt guarantee senior success but obviously is a big help.kk got lawlor, deegan, browne, blanchfield, john walsh that were beaten by westmeath in the u21. Kk club hurling is probably the strongest in the country. Anoyone could see a few years ago stephen donnelly and jordon molloy were excellent at club level. Cant understand how vegas or mooncoin couldn't of got a few lads in the last few years. The net has being spread far and wide again and training is very very serious so lads deserve huge credit for that but there's no way we can go up to croke park with deegan wing back and billy drennan on the bench. Thats a complete dead loss. From what im hearing herity has being absolutely unbelievable in ballyhale in the short space of time and the brains behind the couple of key switches that helped the shamrocks get over the line. Some were very obvious eoin cody out to 11 but corcoran to 6 and richie to the wing, kenneally wing back to shadow heary and mullen a wrecking ball corner foward. Its a bit of a rebuilding job now and derek will be forced to make changes but needs to have the balls to drop certain players. The goalkeeping position has to be looked at. Shotstopping has gone back and puckouts are desperate.Could have a new full back line. Butler struggling for form, huw gone, tommy injured, shane murphy not a corner back.killian corcoran will get a run corner back and rightly so. Moylan will get a few runs at 3 but id probably try devolp mikey. Neary/bolger/rowe. You would be hoping eddie and corcoran will be a help and bring something fresh to the table

They had to change that after this season. 4,000 at a match that should have at least 12,000 at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭nippy corner foward

Wexford support has being poor the last few years. A team in rebuild but so heavily reliant on one man.maybe hurling in div 2 will give them a chance to blood lads easier

I heard the U 20 and minor trials are well underway, the U20’s have three trials and nobody has a nailed down place which is a good thing .'so the link from development squads to the actual team seems to be broken and let’s the management pick theirs squads on their merits while I’m sure most players picked will have come up through the squads anyway but we could uncover a few new players.

    Changes at County board?

New treasurer? And name change for Bord na Nog?

I have heard that there will be a couple of positions contested at CB level, it wouldn't surprise me if we are looking for a new treasurer. The current treasurer has been squeesd out by our CB secretary so it wouldn't surprise me if he does step away, he gets criticised here from time to time but he has done a great job (in my opinion) in an very difficult position and deserves a lot of credit for the healthy position the CB finances are in. On the bord na nOg, I think it's a chairman change we need and not a name change!

I think the fact that for the last few years Kilkenny have gone into the game already qualified and Wexford already out hasn't helped either. This should be one of the marquee games in the Leinster championship so having it on early when both teams have something to play for makes sense and should give the game that bit of edge it needs. It's a difficult start for us, Galway away and Wexford won't be easy games, I wouldn't fancy going to Parnell Park the last day having to get a result. A big few months ahead for Derek, I think most reasonabl minded fans don't expect us to win an AI next year, if he goes out and tries to freshen the team up and is bringing through new players and we see progress I think he will get the benefit of the doubt but if he goes out with more of what we've seen the last 2 years the criticism and the pressure will begin to mount on him. Talking to a couple of lads who had worked with Niall Corcoran before and they were full of praise for him, hopefully he will get our lads going. The worry I'd have though is that Noel Doherty and Declan Wall were also very well respected and obviously didn't get much say in things last year.

Bear in mind that Treasurer is not a position that's up for election. It's a role where the holder is selected. Nor is it subject to the 5 year rule.

That's not 100% correct, the position is an elected role and has to be reappointed like the other officers every year but it isn't an apointed role. You are correct though it isn't subject to the 5 year rule that is in place for other positions.

Any updates on Development within the county. We are in November now and it seems that the big 3 teams are in preparation for 2026(Minor,u20 and senior). What facilities in the county can sustain the preparation for the next 5 months up to the end of March with the soft ground etc.

This is massive problem going forward.

There was 96 players in for U-20 trials and its down to 66 players now. Panel will be picked in 2 weeks time. There are 25 players already nailed on and they are looking for 9/11 others to come through the trial process this week and next week. All very positive and well run so far.

That’s Brillant to hear that the net is being spread so wide

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Sir Chaz

Was there any U20 trials last year at all? Fair play to management for putting time into them this year although you'd fear that as a result we are beginning to leave it late to start? Tipp are together since September I believe.

Would appear far more prudent to have management teams in place far earlier so they can attend club games and see potential panelists there, rather than relying on lads trialling under floodlights in winter conditions. That will invariably suit a certain type of player rather than a lad who might thrive on a faster ball on summer ground.

Same with minor albeit all that management team have been in the squads so should be more familiar with the lads that are contending for panel places.

We have teams in All Ireland finals (20s) granted they lost but that is that argurment and Liam Cahill dropped more after a dismal 2024. Derek should have done the same in 23 when he came in. We don't know are they good or not good enough because they haven't been given chances. It just to me doesn't match the perform for your club and get your chance narritive that Cody followed and Derek definitely follows (all words btw)

Yes anyone can see Reid is good for Ballyhale but this has never translated to Kk. On Doyle being good in a u21 B game is grand but there is better than him around, Denis Walsh in my list is similar age and I would say is alot better.

Ah here Richie whilst a great chap got his goes. I am hopeful too and want KK to do well but I can point out flaws.

Also I read Dublin are doing trials for football it would be cool to do North V South of all 3 grades and have 2 teams of A

Good news on the 20s that is great they cannot be blamed for not looking at everyone.

Yes there was definitely trials held last year. Management were aware they were going to be in place long before they were announced this year so they all would have seen lots of games from August onwards I imagine.

I like Liam Cahill and what he has achieved but think his aura is getting exaggerated. He's been excellent and has done everything right but there was an element of luck this year for tipp. Looking at the highlights of our semi final recently, and we really shot ourselves in the foot a few times- mistakes, less desire and bad luck. The final against Cork was Cork's to lose at half time and they did that with extraordinary style, coupled with a sending off. Limerick were also out of the equation by then. Some media lately glorifying how a sweeper won an all ireland- no, a red card and implosion won it much as the desire Tipp had.

Ifs, Buts, Candy and Nuts etc but I'd imagine a lot of different all stars this weekend if Cork, Limerick and Kilkenny hadn't imploded. And I don't think that Kilkenny would have won the All Ireland without a similar Cork implosion.

Again, nothing to take away from Tipp. I like and respect how they went about their hurling, tactics and desire this year.

The players you mentioned for Tipp all have All Ireland medals at 21 or 20 and have been on their panel a number of years (bar Doyle). Brian O'Meara for example was player of the Fitzgibbon in '22 and outhurled Cian Lynch in the final. He opted off the co panel that year, Colm Bonner was manager and he returned in '24 under Cahill. I am sure you attended this years '20 All Ireland in Nowlan Park? The gap in standard between Tipp and ourselves was similar to the reverse in our favour in '04, 20 + points either way.Just like us back then, Tipp can look forward to many more good days on the strength of outstanding underage success in the past decade. We have to try and compete with them ,Cork, Clare, Limerick etc with little or no such underage success to bolster our squad. Unfortunately that along with no Huw Lawlor, Billy Ryan and possibly Harry Shine and Tommy Walsh for '26 is our reality . A huge challenge for everyone , minor ,u20 and senior to turn things around and they will need everyones wholehearted support.

DJ comes out of it looking very very bad.. however I will say as a kerryman we will never ever again see a player give us the people watching that buzz or sense of anticipation that he was going to do something special when he got the ball.. his acceleration/speed was frightening... his striking everything was perfect.. God bless him and watch over him

Nice words. No one can condone or excuse anything he did but some of the coverage, especially the book by a local journalist leaves a sour taste. Feels like a money grabbing opportunity if you ask me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,499 ✭✭✭✭greenspurs

    Exactly .....

Releasing it the same day in court is just pure money grab...

Shes making a great job of promoting it...

Well said to you both. The facts have been laid bare for all to see…Reprehensible absolutely. He did the crime he will now do the time and apparently on release, he will be homeless, penniless, friendless and in the words of his own Counsel a "Pariah". For a country where it can't often be said, the punishment fits the crime that is hardly true here. However, for some people that will never be enough. Everrything about it is disturbing and sad.

TJ and Henry were more effective Kilkrnny hurlers but Dj was the most exciting and artistic. Kilkenny supporters don't do chants as in Tipp, Tipp, Tipp or Rebels - the only time I heard them chant was for Dj. He was a hero of mine, you could hear the buzz when he got the ball 40 metres out and went on a solo. Along with hundreds of others, I went to Gowran club games just to see him play. Anytime I met him, he was softly spoken and modest, maybe not the brightest. The ironic thing is that if he wen't to pay for something, he was often told his money was no good there.

And then, he ruined his legacy and hurt a lot of people by stealing money from them. A tragedy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭Village87

The whole thing is very sad on everyone and this forum is not the place to discuss it. No need for comments on DJ or the journalist . "Feels like a money grabbing opportunity if you ask me". That comment about the journalist comes across somewhat sardonic

He doesn't deserve any sympathy. If he had came forward said he had financial trouble an needed help I'm sure people would have helped him out but to play on people's emotions like that as a way of getting money is pure scumbaggery.

It was pure greed by him, he could have had a very good life doing media work, coaching, personal appearances on top of a normal job but that just wasn't enough for him.He just couldn't accept he wasnt a multi millionaire, unfortunately thats the way it is for 99.9% of us and we dont go around scamming people

I could tolerate him scamming Denis O'Brien as he has money to piss away but to target normal working people like the hurling coach he worked with is just the lowest of the low.
