Happy out with this news, I subscribed early and would be happy to continue with an annual subscription, it's a unique service that has served me well over so many different end of scale topics for close on 20 years I think ? Edited joined May 2006. So 19.5 yrs 😃

Well done to persevering with it and getting there.

Fantastic news, thank you Odhran and Mike. Would miss boards terribly if it was gone.

Mixed feelings here to be honest.

On the one hand, yes it's great that Boards will continue into another year anyway. The content from its users (despite the problems in certain parts of the site) remains valuable and thus far irreplaceable.

On the other though, it's a bit much to read all the outpouring of well dones when it's a lot of those same problems, in addition to the never ending technical issues, under the current management that led to this crisis in the first place.

Let's be clear here... From what's been said in the OP, all that's actually happened is that the subscription with Vanilla has been renewed.

    That's it.

The only other ideas offered so far are how to extract more money from the users and other potential revenue opportunities. Again very very much focused on Boards as a business - nothing about the points raised repeatedly by its community.

As also mentioned by others above, despite the message a few months back from Mike and Odhran that without an immediate substantial cash injection from the users the site would close imminently, somehow it's going to continue on with only a third of the target being reached? That suggests that either that target was massively wrong, or Boards was massively overpaying for the Vanilla subscription.

So yes, it's great that we'll still have a site to debate these things on (and everything else), but let's not lose perspective of the bigger picture and still entirely valid issues and challenges either.

While I think most of us get your point Kaiser , it's a case of " Let's take the small win for now " though.

From Odhrán's post I understood that the outstanding issues will be discussed over the next few months and hopefully a long term plan for the site with community involvement .

Yarra at this stage let's just be happy with the wee bit of good news and let the dust settle for a few days.

Then we can all go back to giving out.

Excellent news. Another 20 year boards veteran here (christ we're getting old) who's only delighted the site survives for now.

For sure there's a conversation to be had about how things proceed for 2027 and transparency is key as that process unfolds. Beyond simply offering to give input and support to that conversation - the rest of it can happen on a different thread and in due course. This is a good news thread.

Either subscribe or don't subscribe but don't make a possible subscription conditional on receiving some info that you don't actually need!

to put it mildly, I am extremely disappointed with your response. So , with all hats off, for all I know I could be contributing into the proverbial ‘ black hole’, . Maybe I am the only Boardie that knows little or nothing about the company’s accounts, how it is structured, what it’s memorandum and articles of association are , etc. I would genuinely appreciate if you will reconsider your position and provide some relevant info.
Should we not be a bit more transparent after that very recent court case in which some very wealthy individuals and others who held a certain individual in very high esteem were hoodwinked into making significant financial contributions.

Subscribe or don't - we don't need to hear feeble excuses for not subscribing

Like it or not Boards going forward will most likely be a subscription based site, whether that's voluntary for all remains to be seen. I am happy paying for what I get out of the site but others want a lot more transparency in relation to certain aspects and maybe the owner will oblige those people in the next few weeks when the ongoing plan is put out for us all.

I am fairly sure you can look up most of the companies information and accounts details online if you want. Do you ask your broadband supplier for their accounts when subscribing? I know a lot of members have questions and want the future put out for them to look at but at the end of the day this is a business owned by someone who doesn't need to bother keeping it going if they didn't want to.

For now can we all just be content that we can still bitch and moan about everything here for at least another year.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

For less than a euro a week ....yes €1, based on annual subscription of €50 I get an awful lot of fun, advice, information from boards.ie, comparing it to DJ Carey is a fcking joke.

The content you enjoy so much comes from site members, not site subscribers.

Youre in for a shock on the lack of content when a site becomes subscription based.

Wrong decision but good luck to the site anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,242 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

There is no push to go over to subscriber only afaik though.

Subscribe or not you can still post .

Just might not be a site to post in eventually without subscribers but that might change depending on what model of funding is decided upon next year ….

Would you be in favour of any particular type of funding as a matter of interest ?

    Ah for Jaysus sake

You are seriously comparing a website where you can choose to subscribe or not (and still get to use it if you don't) with a case of criminal deception involving individuals being taken for tens or hundreds of thousands of euro…

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Some people just won't pay for anything if they don't really have to, trust me.

Good luck extracting what you can to keep the site going in the future though.

If you have a genuine interest in the finances of the company, you can purchase a copy of the abridged accounts from the companies office as some here already have.

As others have said, subscribe or don't. If you choose not to, I wouldn't expect those of us who have subscribed and/or made postive suggestion to improve this site to place much weight on your criticisms.

There is no push but there are suggestions by people posting.

Funding is up to the owners. Not the public.

Boards.ie was built on community untilizing free user advice and user experience.

Do you think its makes business sense to shake down your users who without them, the concept of having a site like boards does not exist.

It was the owners who made the platform so expensive to run for themselves.

Isn't it in their interest to keep the platform free for its users. They dont offer any products or real services which is justified to charge for.

I'm also surprised they are throwing money at the problem instead of a solution.

Kicking the can down the road and people back slapping on a job well done is normally seen in councils and governments.

Maybe thats seen as success by many as it seems to clear in this thread.

Seems odd but thats just an opinion.

I think most people are happy that the immediate issues have been resolved.

However to say that any of us posting do not recognize the continuing issues is not only facile but insulting.

Sounds like you would have preferred the news was bad so you could continue to wag the finger at others for paying a subscription .

Obviously it is the subscribers that have helped to save the site …along with the owner renegotiating the contract with Vanilla . And non subscribers putting up with not having an adfree experience .

Whether that will be the situation after next year we will see . We all know the problems with Vanilla and would be looking for a better outcome .

But in the meantime we are happy that the door is not going to close imminently .

We enjoy using boards or we would not be here , and that must apply to you as you are here too .

Can you not acknowledge that ??
