Great news. Well done folks. The work involved for basically no gain for anyone is a testament to everyone involved. From posters to mods to owners. While one may have issues with moderation or people's opinions, sites such as this are important. By using (volunteer) moderators, they are doing more than billionaire platforms to keep things civil.

We are in a time where billionaire social media owners are on record saying that strife is good for their billion-dollar businesses. That hate, strife and anger drive profit and is encouraged. To the point that they actively get rid of people they don't even pay. All to make more money on division.

They rely... THRIVE on division. Sites such as this thrive on debate and conversation.

Well done and congrats to everyone involved and long may independent voices prevail in such times.

This is good news - if Boards ceased to exist I would probably never bother with forums or the ilk again, I abhor the cesspit of Reddit and social media

Whilst Boards and forums in general have seen a decline there is definitely an appetite against the alternative (and is already happening). Like flares were the thing in the 70's they're making a comeback

But in saying that if I was running a forum today there a few thing I would be doing to make it more "modern" - text based browsers have come a long way since the early days of forums and even little things like live updates to comments in threads can make a big difference (remember back to the days of Covid and by the time you read a comment there was 3 pages of other comments already posted) But I'm drunk and will end here!

One other thing - the way I'm reading Odhrans post is that Vanilla agreed to a reduced rate for the privilege of hosting Boards - is this down to the mass migration away from them and trying everything to hold on to people?

My thoughts are that an hosted solution like Vanilla is a stranglehold on any business

    That's lovely. Well done.

hi Odhran, I was thrilled to hear the good news. I am willing to make an annual contribution to Boards.ie but I know ABSOLUTLY nothing about the ‘ company ‘ behind it . Is there any possibility that you can share some information on same if such exists. Eg annual audited accounts, directors or even The latest income and expenditure report. I may be asking too much but there is ‘ no harm’ in asking I assume. Does the ‘company/group even have a brochure about itself?

Which reminds me. Could boards ie allow for someone to recover passwords via mobile?

I'm obviously missing something here. €32K for another year of bouncing Vanilla?

There was no point in fixing things yet, when the site was maybe going to shut down or revert to basic vanilla.

Maybe the various bugs can be patched and worked on now.

Congratulations on 14 months of a survival plan.

Delighted at the great news that the site has been saved for now but it's a pity we're stuck with Vanilla. Were other options looked at?

I would like to think so but the reality is if they didn't subscribe by now then they are v unlikely to going forward

I’d imagine most of them will come up with another reason not to pay.

For all the flaws of Vanilla, I don't know if the site would survive another migration tbh. Not if there was any significant downtime, anyway.

Well done Odhran and Mike and everyone who's helped keep the lights on.

I've only read the good news from Odhrán just now. I'm absolutely thrilled that boards is staying open next year.

Well done everybody. Let's hope Boards.ie has a great future ahead of them.
