Ordered the 30th Anniversary version of this. Should have it next week.

It's still easily my favourite recent purchase. I use it so much. It's just lovely to game on.

Portal update is rumoured to add the ability to stream the games you own, not just the ones in the collection.

For the money it's an amazing bit of kit.

Digital purchases only assume? Disappointing but understandable.

    Still, fantastic news nonetheless.

Seeing as they dont even let you review with a physical copy, I assume the same. Good step in the right direction if true. But they'll probably lock it behind Premium if they include the Catalogue.

Yeah either kind of cloud streaming (owned / subscription catalogue) is a premium feature. But worth it if you are getting a portal.

Not yet but the PS store added a line to purchasable games " buy this game and stream it to your PS5 and portal" then it was fairly quickly removed. So I'd say it's imminent.

Mate was gonna buy one for upcoming hospital stays but I thought the crap wifi would impact its use. Is it still the case you can only stream to these? or can you download to the portal?

Yeah it's stream only. There's no real memory or storage or anything to download to (bar what it uses for its own operation).

It's either remote play directly from your console, or cloud streaming, both of which will require internet.

Can't wait for this, the list of games isn't showing though

It means that you can essentially have a Portal and play the likes of Astro Bot and Ghost of Yotei without the need for a PS5 which is fairly incredible.

    Brilliant!

There are plenty of nights my son is playing PS5 and I want to have a game of something not in the Streaming catalogue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,478 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I was on the fence at the start with it being streaming from console only (which really was just stream at home), but once I got it in hand I loved it, it's steadily gotten better and better too. Cloud streaming was a big update, this makes it even better.

If they let us stream video now it would be great.

I do remember someone hacked it and ran PSP games directly on it. But it's not very powerful/ not huge storage to be able to do much more.

Still would be a cool update for when you're on a plane without WiFi to kill a few hours.

Just gave the cloud streaming a very quick burst there. Seems to work fine. I picked Star Wars Jedi Survivor because I knew it was a game in my library but not installed. Only gave it a few minutes but aside from getting my arse kicked by some droids because I forgot all the controls for the game, it played pretty much as you'd expect.

I've been on PS Plus now for a couple of years so am hoping there'll be a decent sale on PS Plus for Black Friday and I can pick up PS Premium and get this feature.

I just had a look and it's not just games you bought but the games in your library. So all the free monthly games work too.

I've 164 in my "owned" library that I can stream and 293 in the cloud library.

There is a lot of cross over but still a very decent offering.

I tried Minecraft last night. My son was on the PS5 playing Minecraft and I couldn't figure out how to join his game. I'm not sure if its a feature of Minecraft on the Portal or something dumb we were doing.

Other than that I tried Outer Worlds and it ran great, the smaller control sticks on the portal are not great and took a few mins to settle in.

The troubleshooting menu is a great addition.

I get 1 to 2ms of latency when situated in the same room as the PS5 (wired PS5 and 5Ghz wifi6).

When using the cloud streaming the latency is around 20 to 22.

I had zero dropped frames in around an hour of gaming last night so they may have also improved the performance in the update.

Minecraft has been removed now, or at least I can't find it. Only Legends.

I think the steam via cloud experience has started to surpass the stream from console experience.

Been playing a good chunk of arc raiders and it's been great. Only issue is cloud doesn't support voice yet, so I can't beg for my life when I get downed 🤣

I tried one round of Arc on the portal and the ever so slight lag was noticeable. I love the portal for single player games but found online games harder to control.

Yeah a big part of why I bought the Portal was when I was mad into Tekken 8 and I thought even if I'm not playing online, I could be doing practice stuff on the Portal while watching TV or something. But after using it for a bit, the timing was just a little off at times to the point that I struggled to use it even for practice (also didn't help that the practice mode in T8 requires a lot of use of the touchpad which is a pain to use on the Portal imo, they really should have tried to have rear touch-buttons on the back of the device).

It's a great device for single-player stuff like you say (and luckily for me, I almost only ever play single-player stuff anyway), but when your reaction and timing has to be precise, particularly when it comes to multiplayer stuff, I'd trust it less. If anything, I'd say the ability to now stream your games directly from the cloud rather than through the console is likely to be a better experience in that regard like Grumpypants says, as you're now cutting out one link in the chain (Portal to Cloud rather than Portal to Cloud to Console).

Totally agree, I played through Outer Worlds and Assassin's Creed Valhalla on the Portal and forgot I was streaming.

When my PS5 is tied up by the kids, being able to play on the Portal has allowed me so many more hours of gaming this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,478 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I've been playing a good chunk of arc raiders but my play style changes on the portal. I'm more about the looting than the shooting. As there is a difference. Partially the stream but also the sticks are smaller so it's a little harder to be accurate.

If I have the PS5 free then there is no comparison. But if not , it's easily the best of the handhelds (steam deck or switch 2) by a country mile.

I think the stick size is my least favorite thing. I struggle getting accurate control on a lot of games.

That said, for the price of the Portal it is so worth it for the amount of gaming it has unlocked for me this year.
