OK, so Energy Dance has been on now for a few weeks. It’s a welcome addition to the DAB+ platform and a further recognition that there’s an audience out there for dance music. 👌

I’ve been involved with many dance radio stations since the '90s and I am a (somewhat obsessive) dance music collector. I may not represent the normal listener, but nevertheless - here are a few suggestions:

    • Consider excluding the more commercial tracks from the playlist - for example tracks from artists like Dua Lipa & Ariana Grande.
    • Play some more longer club tunes - for example one at top and bottom of the hour. Make it a feature maybe? Keep the real dance fans happy.
    • Add more music - there's a huge potential library of quality dance tunes to choose from. I’d much rather hear more tracks less frequently than hearing the same tracks regularly.
    • Some, not all, of the older '90s tunes can sound a bit flat or warbly. Check the source is the best possible.
    • Consider specialist shows in the evenings - DJ mixes, club classics, trance music etc.

    Other comments:

    • As mentioned above, some of tags are not quite right. It has improved but a small number have the artist and track names reversed or contain a typo.
    • The online audio steam is MPEG audio - newer codecs (like HE-AAC v2) would be a better choice for audio quality in 2025 (now widely supported).

Best of luck the Energy team and their continued efforts. 😎

As a man who lives in Kerry I have to say that DAB+ needs to be advertised and promoted if its to go forward. I don't think anybody knows about this new service. It will fall on its ass if no noise is made about it, just like RTE DAB and I'm thinking that's what will happen.

It seems you lack the basic understanding of the purpose of HE-AAC v2.

There is no point using modern codecs if you have high bitrates to play with; they're streaming at 128k so conventional AAC would probably be ideal.

Something else I've noticed is that some tracks are clearly off mix compilations - you can hear the start of the mix to the next track at the end; and they start a bit bluntly.

I'd be surprised if there's much revenue. I don't hear any ads on most stations

I only know about it because I got a car with DAB+. Otherwise would never have hear of it

It's very much possible that they shut it down again.

I'd say it's more a question of willingness or not if DAB+ is successful.

Other small countries have implemented it, like Slovenia or Norway with more challenging geography. So in Ireland it's probably more a question of lack of willingness, lack of funding, and lack of attitude and fear of something new with fear of losing revenue. The famous "now it's too late" and "ship has sailed" kind of talk we read so often here.

Onic now have some ads on their stations. First ads I've heard on DAB exclusives - Freedom have had ads during their FM temp though.

Rewind have been running ads since shortly after the DAB launch….

So many oldies stations means I haven't listened to Rewind much at all.

5B just went offline, my radio switched over to 7C after a few seconds.

Edit: Rescanned around 14:30 and it's back on.

MPEG not good enough, we need 2.5Mbps FLAC 😉😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

2.5mbps FLAC is also pointless, as the PCM that FLAC decompresses to is only 1411kbps!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭ryangontv

    Yes, that is true

Onic Alternative needs some urgent playlist widening

The odds of hearing Karma Police every single time I'm in the car are ridiculous at this point

I suppose DAB+ won't be contunued in Ireland. Not enough marketing, too few transmitters. They would have to have a plan to cover the whole of the ROI by now. As they don't I'd see this also as an indication that they will withdraw the service. The RTE also doesn't seem to have any DAB+ plans.

Seems like real choice on the radio will only be for those who live close to the North or pick up something from Wales along the East coast….

Now it's too late and the ship has sailed wil rule ultimately.

This is, and always was going to be, a trial with specific coverage.

Comreg and CnaM have to actually decide to licence DAB, and the put the system out for bids. Other multiplex operators might bid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,815 ✭✭✭tinytobe

So far this hasn't happend either. So, I take it, DAB+ in Ireland will mostly go silent soon.

Another article in the Irish Times "DAB+ the technology We don't need….."

    Not too hard to predict.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Comreg are unlikely to do or say anything until the end of the trial.

Are you inviting Irish Times articles in your head, or are you adding a + to the title of a 4 year old article from when RTÉ turned off their DABv1 setup?

I’d be mega sorry to see this service go as even my missus and kids are using it constantly in the car and on the 3 DAB Radios in the house.

    Terrific quality

Best thing to do is to let the broadcasters of the channels you're listening to know that you are listening - if they know they have a viable audience, they are going to want to stay on air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,815 ✭✭✭tinytobe

I just have a bit of irony here. Nothing more than that. Plus I also love DAB+ as a standard.

There is only a handful of countries in the EU which doesn't have DAB+, Finland, Portugal and Ireland. But the majority in the EU are having a plan to roll out DAB+ or have done so already, and plan to shut down FM at some point in the 2030ies…

Tried to tune in new car radio to Dab, only channel found was 8radio, Dublin based, scanned a number of times, just one channel found. Any ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It isn't a case that its showing you one mux and the first station on said mux, which alphanumerically, is 8radio? Like you could click in and get a listing below that

I've seen Mazda radios do something similar.

Even if failtedab pull out couldn't Bauer onic and bay set up their own and let independent broadcasters i

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

They would also need Comreg/CnaM to actually offer a multiplex licence and tender for it.

They are very unlikely to get involved directly, hence why a private operator exists with both of them as customers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 136 ✭✭Cmx95

The new year will tell if they do put a tender out for a multiplex I can't see why not considering the multiplex is full at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭Lord Nelson

You clearly have no idea how the process works. Firstly, it wouldn’t be financially viable to roll out National DAB on a trial basis. Given the investment required, I’d be surprised if Failte DAB do more than break even as things stand. Secondly, regarding promotion,I agree it’s been piss poor however I suspect the operators are playing to the gallery here ie: CNaM. It clearly wouldn’t make sense to spend large amounts of money advertising a service with no guarantee of it continuing beyond the trial period. Time will tell where it goes however I wouldn’t write it off at this stage.

I just noticed that Rewind had "Soon to be Xmas" on its radiotext between songs.

And I also noticed that one of the businesses that advertises on Rewind let its website domain expire back in September!
