Generally speaking, if you live nearby and know about an inaugural event, you should go if you’d like armed with the knowledge that it may be busy (queues for scanning, things not quite working smoothly etc).

The whole thing about obscuring the date of an inaugural event is to discourage the hyper parkrun tourists who will all travel the country on the same day to attend.

Lucky enough to be able to complete my 300th parkrun today.
    Did the course check too.

Hopefully will be able to do another 300.

Does anyone know how I could go about applying for the mountjoy parkrun?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 804 ✭✭✭CassieManson

I would suggest you start by emailing progression@parkrun.com and they will advise. I think there can be a fairly long wait list.

there is a long waiting list for progression, was about a year long. Last I heard, the waiting list has been closed and they are not responding to requested to visit.

    Hi All,

Hoping to my 1st ever parkrun in the coming weeks , late to this running game at 35.

do i just sign up online and bring the barcode?

Also how does the timing work?

    cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 568 ✭✭✭Butterbeans

35 is not late to the game by any stretch. You won't regret doing parkrun...but be warned, it may take over your life.

    Register for parkrun https://www.parkrun.ie/register/?section=form

Bring along the barcode to the event. When you finish, the timekeeper will click the timer as you cross the line. You will be handed a finish token which corresponds to the time clicked when you crossed the line, and it will also have your finishing position on it. Bring both your barcode and finish token to the barcode scanner. They will scan your barcode, and hand it back, and then scan the finish token which they will keep.

That's it. You'll get your results later on via email, and you'll be feeling delighted with yourself.

    Enjoy

Would also advise you be at the event for 9:15 for any first timers briefing. Look for the Run Director, they'll be in either a white or a blue hi Viz vest and introduce yourself.

Remember also, everyone in a vest is an amateur volunteer so be kind and patient and after a while you might have the confidence to volunteer yourself.

    This too shall pass.

I applied in February 2024. Date they gave me was November 30th last year. Email. They'll ask for your date of birth.

@The Black Oil do you mind me asking what email address did you apply to?

Anyone know if there’s a way to get a list of parkruns in Ireland in the order they were launched?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭Duzzie

    https://wiki.parkrun.com/index.php/Category:Ireland_Events

thats the full list. Not sure about getting the order in which they started

actually this has the anniversary dates for all events, you will need to sort by country.

I'm curious, I never see any Dublin parkruns cancel because of over attendance risks on marathon weekend like I'm seeing in Brooklyn Bridge New York (and nearby Branch Brook in New Jersey) and the Chicago parkruns a few weeks back, but do the Dublin runs get a surge of tourists on marathon weekend?

    This too shall pass.

Well they may get a few tourists, but there are many, many more parkrun events to choose from in Dublin than there are in New York and/or Chicago. Plus Dublin Marathon doesn't get near the number of visitors that the major marathons do. So no, it would be highly unlikely for parkrun Ireland to need to take any measures.

Haven't checked the attendances but I 'd expect the reduction due to regular local runners not parkrunning the day before they marathon would likely balance out a lot of the visitors. And most Dublin parkruns could handle twice their usual numbers without systems breaking down. Weather related closures regularly fold several attendances into the few events left running.

For anyone who uses the 5k app, I noticed it now shows the total number of both runs & volunteers in the results. Not sure when that started happening.

A number of parkruns cancelled this week due to the weather.

According to the Broadmeadow Linear page, Fingal co Co are instructing no parkruns in their area during Storm Claudia's Orange warning.

    This too shall pass.

Ironically, one of the very few Dublin runs not cancelled yet is "Waterstown"

Even more ironically, that one did get cancelled in the end.

    Due to a fallen tree.

I have a couple of historical questions if anyone would like to help me out. Why did Killarney parkrun move to Killarney house and why didn't Tyrrelstown resume after Covid?

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 cicks

Killarney moved in July 2019. Tyrrelstown was due to no core team after Covid.

Don't quote me but my understanding was that Killarney parkrun was always intended to be based in Killarney House and Gardens. At the time the parkrun started in 2015 Killarney House was a building site as it was being restored along with the garden so the parkrun was located in Muckross - about 4 miles outside town close to Muckross House. Maybe inertia set in and the move back into town didn't happen until 2019 even though the restoration work at Killarney House had finished in 2016/2017. I guess there must have been some discussion about it as one morning a poll was conducted at the parkrun with a majority favouring a move to Killarney House. The move was set in motion shortly after that. The course at Muckross was hilly while the one in Killarney House was largely flat. Some runners preferred one over the other and the Event Director was not happy so a new Event Director took over. Average attendances at the new location are much higher than had been the case at the old one so, if going by that metric, the move was a success.
