    Billy Strings in the Stadium.

Great gig. Albeit the first half - upbeat bluegrass - much better than the 2nd set which had some straight up old boy country.

A load of people missed the start of the gig due to the queue being almost back to Leonards Corner at one point. Bit of a shambles really. Atmosphere was cracking though.

Really solid show. Stadium an embarrassment inside and out.

Jeffrey Lewis magic in the Grand Social tonight. Weird and wonderful, Bob Dylan on speed to punk to spoken word to little cartoon shorts put to song on luminaries from the art/ animation world. Nerdy as feck and super cool, wise and hilarious, absolutely loved it. The fact that he couldn't sell out the Grand Social is a terrible indictment of all of us. I bought a tshirt in protest.

Enjoyedable Concert from New Found Glory in O2 City Hall Newcastle last Sunday. Decent venue that wasn't overly packed

Setlist was great and brought back some good memories of those early 2000 Kerrang days. 'My Friends Over You', 'All Downhill From Here', 'Hit & Miss' and 'Understatement still sound as good as ever

Pop punk is still alive and well, its been a great year for the genre

Next up is Megadeth and (Moe glass infront of my mouth) Disturbed in the 3Arena next Wednesday

Absolute banging set from The Orb which I wasn't expecting at all. It started with lots of dub but ventured quickly in to upbeat electro and drifted in and out of The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld and U.F.Orb which was just excellent. I've never been to that venue (Opium) before but got a decent view and sound upstairs standing behind someone that had a Mark E. Smith in his latter years head on him and was missing half a leg so needed to sit in an assistance chair most of the time.

It was a rave atmosphere though with about 30% of the crowd not even born when Blue Room was released and they danced their arses off. Visuals excellent as you would expect as that was always part of the act but hats off once again to Dr Alex Paterson.

I was also at this. Thanks to a mate being double-booked he passed the ticket onto me, as it had sold out before i'd managed to grab one. Enjoyable night apart from a few generic House tunes that i could've done without. Towers Of Dub the highlight for me. I also enjoyed the support act Maree Men (Alex and Gaudi) for the most part. A couple of tracks didn't float my boat but overall decent. Usual problem of indoor electronic gigs where i don't have enough room to have a proper dance but grand night out otherwise.

Yeah support was good when I got there. 5th or 6th time seeing but I loved the delving in to the first few albums. They played midnight at the button factory about 6/7 years ago and I thought that was much better.

This was the mad one when they were big:

Thanks to everyone on the 2026 thread who brought Joshua Ibehan to my attention. Been listening to him nonstop the past week.

Just found out he’s supporting Baxter Dury in Vicar Street on November 12th.

Stick In The Wheel were pretty good in a near full and lively Bello Bar last night. They take old English folk songs and give them a twist as well playing their own material. A trio consisting of vocals and knob twiddling, drums and guitar (well, dobro to be precise). Some upbeat tunes and some slower ones almost veering into psych territory. Apparently they supported The Pogues in the past year if that means anything.

They're in Belfast tonight and the Roisin Dubh tomorrow, might be worth a look @bodhrandude @Seathrun66

Thanks for the recommendation. I was near the front and they were surprisingly loud for a "folk" band.

HOUSEPLANTS - Button Factory. Third time seeing HP this year and they are consistantly good but are missing that little bit extra to make them special. Example highlight for me last night was their cover of "Tinseltown in the rain" (Blue Nile). Short enough gig - 1hr 20, but I was'nt sorry as for most of the evening I could'nt get away from some very ignorant talkers.

Yeah saw them on Friday and they were great, if a little short. Thought they played for longer at BTP earlier in the year. They probably don't have enough tracks yet. The Blue Nile cover was great.....do I love you, yessssss I love you.

    A bit of catching up

Patti Smith at the 3Arena a couple of weeks ago

    patti0.jpg patti1.jpg patti2.jpg patti3.jpg

Unlike Vicar St last year there was a t-shirt available, but I didn't bother as I had already had one made up with a couple of photos I took at Vicar St

Then 10 days ago in Birmingham - A band I had only seen once before, over 40 years ago when they only played 3 songs across 17 minutes. I was very impressed with their frontman in particular and the performance he gave:

Pillow Queens tonight in the National Concert Hall doing their first album (covid era) in full 5 years on.

I was right in the back row of the stalls but had a perfect view and sound, and got the last €28 ticket, people only three rows in front of me were paying the same as at the front, €45

    20251021_211816.JPG

Unfortunately everyone except us right at the back stayed stuck to their seats… goes with the territory I suppose.

Next up - Gilla Band on Sunday in the Workman's Club

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Decent night of Shoegaze in the Grand Social tonight with Belfast's Virgins kicking off proceedings. First time seeing them and thankfully their sound is beefier live than on record. An enjoyable half hour with them. Next up were SOM who were a slower, heavier proposition. They were solid but at times i felt they were a bit mid-late-90s corporate yank alt-rock. That's a bit unfair but there was untapped potential there imo. Headliners were Slow Crush from Belgium (an international kind of night) and they were the pick of the bunch. Nice lights too. Not often you get a ton of smoke and strobes in the Grand Social. Three strong acts for €20, can't complain really!

Richard Hawley (& Band) - Olympia Theatre. Class, the consummate performer. Strings/Orchestra elevated the classics from Coles Corner. RH as ever witty with anecdotes and background behind the songs / guitars etc. " The streets are ours" on another level. IT review called it 5* and they were spot on.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings tonight (I actually swapped my Wednesday ticket to go to above), so a good week of gigs.

I was there also. He dealt with the idiot heckler very well. He is some storyteller and obviously a great musician too. Some great dynamics on The Ocean

Ah amazeballs. I mean in an ideal world, maybe a tiny bit more Gillian but unreal nights music. Those encores! Everything is free, Miss Ohio, then Bright Eyes into Cortez the Killer topped off with a rabble rousing I'll fly away. Deadly stuff. Rawlings is some man on the guitar. Brilliant night.

Tonight might have just shaded it for Method Acting/Cortez The Killer alone. Phenomenal stuff. You'd go every day of the week if you could. Eight songs swapped out over the two nights. An absolute joy.

Lovely walking down the stairs at the Vic and hearing "thats the best thing ive seen in years". As an unapologetic Deadhead, night 1 just shaded it.

Couldve done with a lil less Rawlings a lil more Gillian please.

Nipped over to Manchester to see Spanish Love Songs, they were supposed to support the menzingers in 2020 but the ferry was cancelled and I've never been able to make the dates work since the world reopened. Routine pain is one of the best albums I've ever heard, so getting 8 songs from it was a bonus, as well as a live debut of a brand new song released that morning, that people already knew the chorus of, a fantastic example of the duality of life where 1000 people joyously sang some really depressing ****.

It's my gig of the year and I don't see anything moving it,

Just back from Feeder in Cork. Played Comfort in Sound in full and few other for the encore. A good night and the crowd got livelier as the night went on. Nice to go home to Cork for a gig for a change.

Dan Whitlam in Whelan's last evening.
    Blown away, amazing.
Easily one of the most special artists I've ever seen.

Tolü Makay as support was really good, so talented.

Probably a good thing I don't live in Dublin, I'd be out 7 nights a week, and totally broke.
