Has anyone been able to access channel 5 on Sky Stream. They have NFL this year and I'm trying to get it running. Looks like it's not available in Ireland anymore.

Channel 5 was never officially on Sky here afaik. You can tune it manually on Sky Q, as it is Freeview, but that wouldn’t apply to Stream.

That is essentially the situation yes, it was never there in the first place.

If you are looking for NFL, and you are not a Sky Sports customer, you can access RedZone on Sky Sports Mix, which is available to all Sky customers, while the International Series games are on VMTV.

Basically Channel 5 is carried free-to-air on the Astra 28.2°E satellites, as part of the Freesat service. It's only available here on a Sky satellite box because the box is able to manually tune to the channel. If you still have a dish, maybe consider setting up Freesat. Some TVs even have a DVB-S and Freesat tuner built-in.

The channel has never been officially available in Ireland, but FTA Freesat service is basically just a narrow 'spot beam' to focus the signal on the UK, Ireland is however in the footprint.

Thanks! Yeah, I was being greedy. I always have the redzone on but saw Green Bay were on 5 and I wanted to check out their coverage. I'll use a VPN and have a look on the laptop or something next week. Thanks, everyone!

I just priced out Sky Stream out of curiosity - as a Sky Q customer, it's exactly the same price. So, I don't really see any advantage in switching over - the whole sky offering seems increasingly bad value for money.

My year offer is just up. Gone from €32 to €57. I'd argue €32 is just about worth it for the service. It had improved over the year, especially if you'd missed the start of a programme by restarting a show almost instantly after it had started. It used to take 20 minutes or half an hour for that feature to work. Channels still don't start instantly like SkyQ and there's a bit of lag but overall it's not a huge issue.

    Now I'm paying:
€41 for sky entertainment with netflix (Barely use the netflix),
€10 for Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos (unsure if it's worth it) and
€6 for ad skipping (ESSENTIAL in my opinion. Ads are 3 and 4 minutes long when using the watch back feature on shows and they happen during every break. It also isn't an ad skip feature it's an ability to fast-forward through an ad which is a bit of a joke).

€25 increase for something I'm unsure is even worth the offer price. I'll see what sky will do for me but I'd be more than likely cancelling. Just too much money.

Does anyone have a fire that I can throw these blasted sky stream pucks into?

They are truly just awful yolks.
I've lost count of the number of times that we have turned it on the next day and the live channels are gone.
I then have to reset wifi, reseat ethernet cable, move the puck around, plug it in and out a few times or just leave it sit for a half hour and then try powering it on again to see the live channels suddenly reappear.
Speaking of powering on, the remote control is garbage and doesn't seem to connect to the device half the time.
Also, when it does connect, it sometimes powers off our TV rather than touching the box.
A physical power button on the box would have been a godsend.

That's all before we even mention the painful user interface.
I'm blue in the face having to tell family how to get back to live channels after accidentally opening some app.

i have 4 of them and never have any of these problems. They're great in fact. There is a physical power button on them, underneath.

A few weeks ago the Channel 5 player started working without a VPN or DNS service. Not sure if that is still the case but it might be worth checking out.

Also worth noting that the carriage costs of sky stream are borne by the customer in the form of the broadband line to your house. Sky don't have to pay for satellites in space or mini-dishes attached to the side of your house, yet they will still charge you the same price for the service! Ouch!

It also means if your broadband goes then so does your TV. I've regularly had no broadband for a day or 2 during the switching process. Do sky credit your account when this happens? I'd say not

I wouldn’t be using it over Sky’s BB anyway - have completely unlimited 5 gigabit service another provider. In the end we’ve opted to just go to Freesat and get rid of Sky. Very little on it worth watching

Switched my Dad from Virgin to Sky Stream, he's struggling to get the tv guide up because theres no dedicated button, he can't even grasp voice control, really wish they had thought of older folk.

have Sky stream myself for last year. The interface is a mess - recording and live pause are flaky at times.

I switched to using a lan connection to the sky stream box and it made it a bit more reliable.
still better than the massive dish on the side of the house….

The lack of an EPG button was a really poor design choice on the remote.

They rarely think of older folk - I've a near 90 year old relative who has given up on TV as she can't handle the menus on her smart tv at all - every time she puts it on she seems to manage to need to navigate something and she just gives up and starts unplugging it and plugging it back in again.

Or you'll get a phone call about how "It's saying there's no signal" and it takes > 30 mins to explain how to put it onto the correct input.

Sky Stream isn't friendly, Apple TV was unusable for many of them, Virgin Streaming's only OK etc etc.

Indeed a lot of the newer smart TV's insist on landing on the Home screen when turned on. However, many have an option buried in the menu to disable it booting to the Home screen and coming on to whatever source was being used when the TV is turned off.

Can be handy for some to avoid looking at the Home screen every time TV is booted and then having to navigate to their TV channels source.

A 32inch monitor with integrated speakers might suit older people

I had similar issues with nothing loading for a while at the start and what fixed it for me was upgrading my broadband. I was on 100 Mb DSL over copper in Dublin City and even though I was meeting Sky’s speed requirement the connection just wasn’t stable enough. Switching to Virgin broadband over cable for the same price solved all of this for me.

I’ve been with them a year now and had various other software issues over that time period but Sky does seem to have ironed them out at this stage and I’m very happy with it. Being able to access iPlayer would be nice but that’s a BBC issue in fairness.

I’m out of contract this month so they wanted to up my bill to a ridiculous €180. Just off the phone to them and they’ve cut that to €100 for another year, including Netflix premium and basically all the extras except the children’s stuff. Ridiculous that I had to do that and it shows how much profit they make, but it took 20 minutes of my time so was well worth it. I told the agent I was cancelling, he offered me €150, I said no, he said “Let me speak with my manager” and came back 2 minutes later with €100. I share the subscription with a family member who is happy with Sky Go on an Apple TV, which seems to be fine by Sky’s Ts and Cs.

My broadband is due for renewal and I see Sky are offering Sky Stream, Sky TV, Netflix & 500Mb Broadband for €44/month for 12 months.

Seems like a good deal ? What's the catch ? I assume it's just the minimum Netflix package (that's what I have now anyway @ €7.50pm)

That's a good deal. What's the price after 12 months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭v10

All lot more than that I'd say, all details are here , but I'd take it for 12 months then cancel anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭NotShero

The out of contract prices are - Sky Ultrafast Plus 500Mb/s Broadband €64pm, Sky Essential TV with Netflix Basic €31pm. You'd be able to re-contract for a lower price but it wouldn't be as low as the new customer price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,244 ✭✭✭Breezer

I basically just got the new customer price for my package for a second year. For my package a new customer would pay €88 for 2 months and €104 thereafter. I’m paying €102 for 12 months. I’m guessing that’s on the higher end in terms of the extras I picked so they may not offer as good a deal if you’re not paying them as much to begin with. But Sky are infamous for responding to haggling. I’d suggest making sure the whole package expires at the same time and then tell them you’re cancelling the whole lot, quote them what Virgin are offering for a broadly comparable package and see what they come back with. Don’t take their first offer. Someone on here advised that if you refuse that they’ll go speak with a manager and come back with a better one, which is exactly what happened me. I’ve also heard of them agreeing to cancel and then emailing or ringing people a few days later with a better offer.

@v10 Yes that looks like a good deal to me.

I renewed my 12 month contract recently and had to go to cancellations to retain the same deal I was on.

If you're tempted by sky stream make sure you check out the package differences and make the choice most relevant to what you want

Sky Q is €30 a month by comparison

tried a couple of times now to order this offer and after getting to the very end (payment details etc taken) it says “processing order” and then goes to an empty page, called sky about it and they say no order has been processed and that they can’t match online orders over the phone so I guess I’ll just stick with Vodafone 🤷🏻‍♂️

I signed up for Sky Stream on a trial as a friend works for Sky and I'm surprised by how laggy the interface is. I use eir TV with an Apple TV and other than the app sometimes logging me out it's been flawless. The Stream Puck in comparison is very laggy and slow to switch channels. I'm half wondering is the Puck I got faulty as it's so clunky!

My steam puck seems really responsive haven’t had any issues other than the price.
