I could be wrong about this but as a country as a whole rather than one specific region, Ireland is the 4th cloudiest country in the world. I think we're only beaten by Iceland, Faroe Islands and Falkland Islands.

If Scotland was a real country I wonder would it rank as bad? Newfoundland is same latitude but I spent the guts of a summer there once and there were weeks of endless sunshine something you'd never get in Ireland.

Scotland probably would be cloudier than Ireland but not by much. UK is lower ranked than Ireland as England certainly does better than Ireland for sunshine especially the south-east with it's more continental flavoured climate. There are other countries which have sections where there is alot of cloud such as parts of Norway, New Zealand and Peru. What makes Ireland different is there is nowhere on this island that gets good amount of sunshine, it's crap sunshine totals throughout the country.

edit: I forgot to mention that the UK's averaged sun totals per year would also include Gibraltar into the mix as it's part of the UK.

Newfoundland doesn't have a massive body of water with a prevalent westerly wind constantly drawing moisture from.

Eastern Scotland often sheltered in a westerly flow does okay, a little better generally than the east of Ireland though not by a massive margin. But then again the northwest can be just as bad or worse as the likes of inland Mayo, Donegal and north midlands. The map below is a good reference. The distribution won't have changed much between 1981-2010 and 1991-2020. It only shows Northern Ireland but you can get an idea how the Republic would be.

Either way I'd be happy with the weather staying like this till spring, sunshine or not. The lack of wind is glorious.

Yep it's actually perfect for outdoor activities. I hope it's like this for Halloween 🎃. Just a pity we are losing the light so fast. The upcoming hour change will be a shock to the system.

Based on latest guidance (GFS 0z) there’s a chance this Halloween could be a cold one with dare I say it, wintry showers. Early days though, could all change.

That's a pretty depressing statistic, but hard to argue with. Even a lovely day temperature wise in Ireland can be ruined more often than not, with the sun frustratingly hiding behind clouds all day, appearing now and again just to frustrate the bejayus out of us.

There is an Irish version of that map (and it's not far off pauldry's!), the colour gradient is poor so it's hard to match to the scale but the NW looks about the same as lower parts of the Scottish Highlands and most of the rest of the country would be in the light grey/white bands on the UK map. The immediate south and east coast probably around 1400-1500 which is roughly in line with the English Midlands.

Definitely, I went for a walk with the missus and the dog just after 7 last night, and yes there was a definite nip in the air. Only going to get worse unfortunately, I'm already dreading Saturday week when the clocks go back. I know that's for another thread, but god I wish they'd stop putting the clocks back.

another chilly day with dark skies and Day 10 without a hint of sunshine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,660 ✭✭✭pauldry

Ya we have had that 1 hour and and few minutes in past 10 days. Luckily according to charts above wev 999 other hours but nearly 400 of them were in Spring.

You can find the house much cooler now with no solar heat entering the windows through lack of sunshine. The garden solar lights are really struggling now as well. I suppose it is October.

just back last night from a week in Madeira, hiking everyday and swimming. It was 26/27 deg and water temperatures 23 deg, absolutely perfect weather. There was good deal of cloud there too but each day we still got sunshine and great warmth. I was hearing great things about the weather at home in Kerry!

A colder dip at Inch Beach today but not as bad as I was expecting, got a decent swim. When the frost arrives the water will start to get bitter.

What I really couldn't get over was the darkness, this photo was taken at 3.38pm! I'm dreading the hour change so much already.

Aw stop ✋️ I hate the dark evenings even now I hate it ,dark at 18:50 , this is when my sads kick in on top of my general depression especially between now and February

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 997 ✭✭✭alentejo

The older I get, the more I despise the hour change at winter!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭Thunder87

Vitamin D supplements help I find, I've tried a SAD lamp as well, never really convinced if it helps or not but I think just seeing the room lit up with summer-like light levels is a boost in itself

Thankfully I'm off to Spain for the week for one last blast of summer

They were talking about this on the radio this evening about the possibility of eventually scraping summertime and staying in wintertime all yr round. The way i see it wintertime is our real time. Summertime was only brought in fot the first time during ww1
