I think most people in this country - if they answer the questions honestly, they will find themselves being more compatible with HH

I think you would have to give some really outlandish statements for the app, for it to say you agree more with CC

It really is going to come down to whether or not people can stomach voting for someone as bland as humphreys; in order to prevent a radical far out candidate like Connolly, from being elected

“and who is likely to keep making statements that need a few weeks of “clarification” as to what she actually means.”

Well we’ve seen it continually in this thread - seems every statement needs to be “translated” for us - it’s not like voters haven’t been warned- every interview, every newspaper commentary has noted it - we can’t all be wrong

It might deter the government from necessary upgrading of our defence forces, if they fear people will think it's what CC calls the military industrial complex.

Well considering everything she says needs clarification and interpretation I’m not surprised people are “betting” on what she thinks

Why do they put things like this behind a paywall?

I did the Which Candidate one and matched with CC 73% compared to 52% for HH.

Sorry were you meant to quote me on this? I never said anything about Simon harris, he isn't even going for the presidency

It only needs clarification because of the continuous efforts to twist, reframe and outright lie about what she actually says.

If you are Irish language above all else HH is a no.

If you want the symbolism of FF / FG out. HH is a no

If you are a dyed in the wool Irish republican- who is even slightly sectarian. HH is a no.

If you want a “protest” vote against the government HH is a no.

If you want the mentality of youthful idealism HH is a no.

If you are anti EU and have mentally invested in the Palestinian cause. HH is a no.

It all comes back to those who still vote as if it is radical Student Union politics. Regardless of age. If you had that mindset you would hardly go for the woman who is the safe choice, and calls herself centrist.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

This is a candidate who answered a Ukraine/Russia question about the causes of the invasion, by saying that she always condemns Genocide committed by Israel. In plain english, i encourage anyone who disagrees with this, to listen to the radio and televised debates. Its all in there. Before getting around to condemning Russia, she makes a case against 'European Militarism', and 'Israel'. If it isnt false equivalencies, its dodging topics.

And the other big move by CC and her supporters, is always claiming that she is being 'smeared' - by journalists and people who have the temerity to quote her, in context! It must be a global first when it comes to smear campaigns, using actual facts and recorded statements! Shocking stuff

Its interesting to note that CC supporters have always waxed lyrical about the principled candidacy of Catherine Connolly. But she is more than capable of side stepping questions, and dodging difficult topics.

The only reason that CC is winning, and may ultimately be elected, is the woeful candidacies of FG and FF - and the fact that SF and Labour made the catastrophic decision to back her.

    Don't like either candidate really…

Going to vote for Jim. He can't take the job, if he wins, we get a re-election…

Humphries is too bland and look like a major step down from the previous three…

Connolly will cost us jobs because she just has no filter… I don't give a crap how intelligent or nice she is, we need someone with a deft touch in that office… I don't even disagree with her views mostly, but she contrite and smug… She doesn't seem to have the ability to keep her mouth shut when Ireland needs her to say nothing. Not someone I dislike, but I don't think she is right for the job.

So I want the political parties to come again…

Agreed, you have to have a bit of plámás for the role. No matter what political views a person has.

Gavin I thought would be great at that aspect. But the political spotlight unnerved him entirely. Pointless if you can’t talk with confidence

I don’t like either remaining candidate either. But as seems a common theme, I am not voting for who I think is best suited for the office. But who I think is the least worst.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I haven't fully made up my mind yet but I've definitely noticed more and more posts from HH/Fine Gael supporters like this and, to be honest, they're leaning me towards CC at this stage. If canvassers for HH are like this then CC'c canvassers can stay at home for the next few days - she's a shoo in.

Agreed but i suppose i meant that, regarding the Irish Times questionaire -

    https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/presidential-election/votesmart-take-our-test-to-find-out-whether-catherine-connolly-or-heather-humphreys-best-aligns-with-your-views/a1537193874.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawNckXdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHvCzJ6gyjPhdGPsY-kkqQImwUJm8_0juzwhJlRLpBpnjL3fLXbjlUO0N3Y7Z_aem_xeTElprBWQIN_x8JOGz0JQ

Iv played around with the questions more than once, changing from Strongly agree, to just agree, and then Neutral. I cannot get this app to state that i have more in common with CC, than i do with Humphreys. When i answer honestly, I get 74% HH and 63% CC - and i can get the gap down to 5% if i change my views to neutral - but at no point has it come back sayingi have more in common with Connolly's views, than i do Humphreys.

I honestly think that tells a story - but of course, the IT will be attacked as being 'biased' and engaged in a 'smear' etc

As Brendan Howlin (Labour) said during the Mary Robinson election in 1990 re the FF/FG smear campaign…"no dirt was too awful, no smear too great"

This is what P Flynn (FF gangster) said of Robinson during that election.

"She has to have new clothes and her new look and her new hairdo and she has the new interest in her family, being a mother, all that kind of thing. But none of us, you know, none of us who knew Mary Robinson very well in previous incarnations ever heard her claiming to be a great wife and mother. Mary Robinson reconstructs herself to fit the fashion of the time, so we have this thing that you can be substituted at will, whether it's the pro-socialist thing, or pro-contraception, or pro-abortion, whatever it is. But at least we should know. Mary Robinson is a socialist; she says it and has admitted it previously. Now she may have changed her mind, and if she has changed her mind, so be it."

Some posters have actually said Connolly does not have the "looks" to be president. 35 years later.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

She made it perfectly clear on the RTÉ interview that she wouldn’t be keeping her mouth shut and would be speaking on behalf of the Irish people -make of that what you will - but if she ends up speaking the way she is right now, it will be a train wreck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Downlinz

UL have a version of this where the candidates have provided answers to the questions as well (https://www.whichcandidate.ie/)

I noticed some of the questions are similar but the answers are inconsistent like Humphreys disagreed candidates should have fluent Irish for the Independent but selected "neither agree or disagree" for whichcandidate for the same question.

In fairness, that kinda is a reflection on the person hearing the statements.

You have after all made up quotes from what she has said.

It's not matter of interest or attention. The problem is that Trump is so capricious, ignorant and spiteful that he might exact some economic penalty on Ireland on a whim. The days when we could depend on economic self-interest, Congress or sensible advisers to divert a president back to common-sense are over. Look at the way Brazil and Canada were treated over trivialities. We brush the imbecile up the wrong way and who knows what the consequences could be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,856 ✭✭✭liamtech

The job of dealing with Trump requires someone who is diplomatically skilled. The ability to see past his spitefulness, and remain 'onside' despite personal feelings. This is a job for a diplomat.

Even dealing with other world leaders will require similar abilities. Putting Irelands best foot forward, maintaining and strengthening Ireland relationships with other states, and non-state actors.

    • Accusing German of creating a military industrial complex.
    • Comparing them to Hiterite Germany circa 1930s
    • Saying that Ursula von der Leyen stands with war criminals.
    • Saying NATO is responsible for Russian invasion of Ukraine
    • the US is an imperial power.

Are these indications of good diplomatic prowess?

So what’s this breaking story about HH and the charity raffle about?

Is she under investigation and if so why ?

Correction- we’ve made reasonable assumptions based on a public figure who wants to be our president and is speaking to us - if what she says is not clear, continually and to many, then really, this is all the pre-voting signs required to rule her out as not appropriate to hold the position of president- it’s actually very simple and clear when you stand back and reflect .

Well it sounds like you have “fully made your mind up” 😀

There’s only 2 candidates- it’s not a particularly hard decision to make

“And the other big move by CC and her supporters, is always claiming that she is being 'smeared' “

She’s exalted towards sainthood in the eyes of her supporters - It’s the “left” version of Trump and MAGA- they’re using the same playbook

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,583 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

My own elderly mother said similar re Connolly regarding looks! She looks too old for a President and doesn’t look like a President, said she.

So I suppose “looks” play a part for some. To have any impact on Trump for example. In my opinion, Ireland probably would have needed a “hot” female President in her 30’s - preferably blonde. And knows how to eh - stroke his ego.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

That could happen with HH so.
    Or Martin or Harris.

Didn't Harris shoot his mouth off and call the man a 'ghoul'? Humphreys has attracted a defamation suit and she isn't even President yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,461 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Yes these “undecided” voters who can give you chapter and verse a left wing narrative of why they’re suddenly voting for Connolly are getting a little tiresome. Clearly they take their honestly cues from the Dear Leader herself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

You used a quote which turned out to be made up, i.e. she NEVER said what you claimed.

If things have to be explained to you continually, generally the problem is you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Downlinz

The story was in the Independent yesterday without naming the politician involved but the ditch have named her today:

Attracted a defamation suit. Says he. Without referencing the TD in question nor his party. It is right up Murphy’s alley pantomime politics.
