Eggs are gone to feck

You would have to understand the business.

The grain is pre approved by the egg packing plant. Then the eggs are shipped to the UK and re-imported. Nuts industry. Loads of paperwork and permits from the department of Agri. Then there are red ticks, antibiotics more paperwork. why cant everyone have a couple of hens for their own house?

Where are you getting this shipping to UK nonsense from? Some maybe but not the vast majority. I'm aware of two major producers near me. Eggs are produced, packed and supplied to retailers in Ireland directly by themselves.

As for taste…I'm a big egg eater and haven't noticed any difference in recent years.

Try organic or free range eggs ?

The egg business is a monopoly leading to lower standards ...the focus is to put out a product which is safe and meets the standards set by the govt and no more.

Could you explain how you consider it a monopoly?

I used to work for a subcontracter (farmer with 5 houses with approx 10k in each house). They had to buy approved feed. A fresh egg should last 6 weeks, hence they are only good for approx two weeks from the shop. There is a subsidy for exporting and reimporting them.

I love eggs too but dont have chickens in our new house. But open to have our own ones but wife not keen on "dirty birds".

Completely agree on tastelessness these days - even of organic / cornfed / free range etc

Been getting melody farm eggs in SV recently and much much nicer though. More expensive but v happy to pay it

Anyone tried Butlers organic eggs in Donnybrook Fair / nourish etc? Worth the extra cost?

hens live comercially for about a year (They then graduate to chicken curry university or Longford Canine food institute of higher education). The first 8 weeks eggs are always small.

I don't know if it's because my taste buds are fecked, more than likely COVID related. But they don't have the same taste they used to. Much blander.

Have a look around your local smaller farms for signs. A lot of them sell eggs to the public now, some will have them at the end of the lane and you leave the money in a box.

Not disagreeing with you but for most people that's just not practical.
