The N5/N61 intersection is a roundabout, all that money on a new road and we couldn't stretch to a flyover?!

It's the N61 not the M50 Red Cow interchange. A roundabout is totally fine.

It's an interruption to the flow of the N5; be better without, in fairness.

The N5 and the N61 host similar traffic volumes in the area, so a roundabout is the easiest way to handle the junction.

Both traffic volumes are also comparatively low negating the need for a complex junction there.

N61 traffic volume concentration would be very heavily weighted towards the Roscommon-Athlone section.

In the Tulsk area they absolutely do not host similar traffic volumes. The N5 is much busier.

That said a well designed roundabout shouldn't be too disruptive to traffic flow.

N61 north of Roscommon has an AADT just below 7k. The N5 at Termonbarry is around 6k and at Frenchpark is closer to 7k

Just south of Roscommon towards Athlone the N61 is north of 8k as you say

It is difficult to believe that Frenchpark has greater traffic volumes than Termonbarry to the tune of 1000 vehicles per day! Surely most of the traffic from Frenchpark, in addition to the traffic coming south through Strokestown converges on Termonbarry?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,204 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Frenchpark would get high volumes of Mayo n5 traffic that would be heading to Boyle or Carrick on Shannon. Still surprising enough figures.

Interesting. I wonder how much of that near 7k reaches Tulsk. Anecdotally it certainly seems a decent chunk turn off before reaching Tulsk although I dunno would figures be available for that.

Alot turn towards strokestown so dont see Tulsk

Traffic coming from Boyle on the N61 would turn off at Elphin for Strokestown. Similarly, traffic coming from Roscommon Town would turn off at Four Mile House for Strokestown.

Some traffic on the N61, particularly that from Roscommon Town might turn off at Tulsk heading west, but not so much heading east.

I was surprised to see the resurfacing works on the N5 between Tulsk and Strokestown. A welcomed improvement all the same.

I've heard they are going to be laying tarmac on a section of the road shortly, and I've seen profiles set out beside the new main Strokestown roundabout where it crosses the L1405 Kilmore road, so likely there, maybe a test lay down.

Also heard the new link road from that roundabout into Strokestown is starting soon as well.

Finally, the infamous street redevelopment in Strokestown is starting next week.

They have tarmac laid already between the Ballinagare and Frenchpark section. Presume its a base layer - but tarmac none the less.

You can see it in this YouTube video. Interesting to see the progress thats been made so far

    Super footage.

I don't really be on the road west from a few Km after the R361 interchange, didn't realized they were getting on so well from Frenchpark.

I had thought they had started the bridge over the Mountain River near the start at Scramogue, unlikely to start until spring now I would think?

The road should be significantly completed by this time next year you would expect.

Thanks for posting. The Frenchpark section has been consistently ahead of the rest of the project for the past year or more. They could easily open this ahead of the rest, if they so wished.

Fantastic footage, thanks for posting that.

I assume that the contractor has been pushing ahead with that section in the hope they could hand it over early. It is really the only section where that could be done. Would be great to have that much open by the summer.

Excellent footage, thank you for posting. Great to see this road getting done.

Taking this and the Castlebar bypass into account, how much will journey times have been reduced let's say driving from Longford to Westport?

From what I heard they are planning on opening that section to where it crosses the N5 again before Xmas. If not before will be shortly after. To enable the tie in works at that junction and finishing works along the old route.

    Very roughly, there’s my calc.

Before, you probably averaged 80km/h on the two sections (if you didn’t hit traffic). Now you’ll average 100km/h.

    So it’s 60*59/80 - 60*59/100

    = 44.25- 35.4 =9 mins

But that’s a very big if, because in practice you would of course hit traffic and every minute you were stuck in traffic is an extra minute that you now save.

    Thought it would be more.

    But still good for Mayo.

I wonder what will happen to the small towns bypassed by this.

Will they thrive or further decline?

Not a sinner stopped in these towns unless it was to take a piss.

True dat. When was the last time any of us stopped in Frenchpark, Bellenagare, or Tulsk.

Thanks for the video. It does a great job of showing the immediate surrounding landscape and natural features that have been obliterated by the route of the new road.

This has probably been asked and answered a number of times here but is the proposed road to be single carriageway or dual carriageway(2+2)? I'm guessing from the video that it will be single. Thanks.

Will this new single carriageway road have a hard shoulder like a standard good quality single carriageway?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,867 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

It’ll be the same cross section as the Ballaghaderreen bypass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭DumbBrunette

I plan to keep stopping in Strokestown as it's very close to the new route. I'd expect Strokestown will continue to get some visitors given the park and house and very (!) ample parking. Similarly, Tulsk might do OK if they put some effort into marketing Rathcrogan and develop the active travel facilities from the village to the actual site. The other villages are likely to struggle IMO.

I’ve stopped at the Applegreen in Tulskma few times is all. Strokestown is a decent town but will likely just continue as is post bypass
