More details in this one, with them having their own line-up to present and commentate:

The broadcaster will also show three playoff games as well as Super Bowl LX. The lineup has also been unveiled with Tommy Martin to host, while Efe Obada, Michael McQuaid, Tadhg Leader, Dave McIntyre, and Bernard O'Toole will also be part of the game day panel.

Yes, their previous rights were effectively through the ITV connection, and they were just taking their coverage. Now they will have to do their own thing.

The UK FTA rights have, for better for worse, now moved to Channel 5. I’ve yet to watch any of their coverage (I normally watch RedZone in the early window at least) but I don’t hear good things about what they’ve done with the wrap around.

Just thought I would mention here that NZ's TV3 (aka THREE) was sold to Sky for NZ$1 or €0.50.

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/567627/sky-tv-to-buy-three-owner-discovery-nz-for-1

NZX-listed Sky said the deal would be completed on a cash-free, debt-free basis, with completion expected on 1 August.

That would be TV3 NZ that hasn’t had a connection with VMTV since they both were under CanWest ownership 21 years ago.

Being bought by Sky NZ that hasn’t had a connection with Sky UK since News Corporation, which owned a 39% stake in Sky UK pre Comcast take over, sold its 44% stake in Sky NZ 12 years ago.

So yeah, just so we’re clear.

Could be that they re-negotiated their contract with ITV in 2024. That last deal (AKA UTV Ireland) deal would have covered them until 2024. But BB I think was part of TV3 attempt to retain audiences in 2015, so may not be part of the ITV package of programming.

What are they planning to replace BB with? The cost of it wouldn't be major, at the very most €2000 per hour and it would have come with other shows, are they dropping anything else from their schedule?

I think BB was relatively stable, they weren't great figures to begin with.

I thought it was worth mentioning here due to the CanWest connection, It's been 19 years, they sold in 2006.

Horribly put, and fans not happy, so they just repeat it

In case you've heard otherwise: - Virgin Media will not be airing Big Brother this season. We know there's been some confusion, and we appreciate your understanding. We're focusing on fresh new content we think you'll love. Stay Tuned! :)

New thing called "Eating With The Enemy" being advertised.

Is this their Aldi version of The Traitors? Set up on the ad looks similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,250 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It is in its 3rd or 4th season. It's part funded by the CnaM sound and vision fund, again it checks a lot of boxes.

I think this might be something different though.

The ads have a group of people sitting at a round table holding cards.

Wasn't the other programme a one on one discussion?

It was so good that they have a spin off series.

Replaced with Love Island Games Series 2, which is a bit sporadically shown, as they seemingly are about 4-5 days behind US showings.

I guess with a lot of live football over the coming month like Champions League, LOI and World Cup Qualifiers, it's hard to keep it on one channel consistently, like VM2.

Just seen the ad again. It's actually called "Dinner With The Enemy" and they seem to be voting somebody off.

The name will definitely cause confusion (and probably lose them a few viewers).

I don't think it had many viewers for Eating with the Enemy. I believe it is the same producers and concept.

Nice that Anthony Nilan (Dir of Programming) did respond to someone on X.

    G1h_Pk-XYAAOc4G.jpeg

I'd wish they'd take that view on a lot of the ITV Studios programming they've shown recently. A lot of their 9pm shows are not in the Top 20 of the week. All those ITV and Channel 5 dramas which have all very similar storylines of murder, mystery and crime featuring the same 3 actresses just don't work.

In 2 weeks time, they have on Monday - Dinner With The Enemy, 'Big Interview' with Presidential Nominee, The Tonight Show. On Wednesday - new series of Faithless, Gogglebox, The Tonight Show. Which is good, and what should the main aim for the channel. But then on a Tuesday you get nonsense like Rich House, Poor House (Channel 5 episode from 2018), Trauma Room One (Channel 5 2023).

The difference is clearly cost, as he pointed out in his letter above. They show a lot of the stuff you mention because they don’t require big numbers watching them to make them viable

Has anyone any idea how much they would of payed previously

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,257 ✭✭✭deezell

Too much, for an archaic show format. The new generation are influencer/thick tock fed. There was none of that 26 years ago when BB launched, Bebo was still 6 years away. Maybe a 40 or 50 somethings version of BB would have a nostalgia market appeal. Round up all the ageing original sad sacks. I hated it then, still do, so no loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,250 ✭✭✭RoTelly

His problem is that an hour of international programming is cost an Irish broadcaster between 1000 to 2500 per hour. Unless they were over paying for the product.

A series of BB would cost TV3 circa 100k per series. As I say unless they are buying it at a premium, which I doubt as they point out "perhaps" another broadcaster might pick it up.

However in fairness to the head of content he replied, and its a fairly good reply, even if I doubt it massively.

Unfortunately we got no extra World Cup qualifiers on virginmedia.ie/football on Thursday night, the page still links to the games from September 9th, hopefully will be fixed for the rest of the round.

Fortunately the Scotland Greece match was available fta on BBC, and what a banger that turned out to be, with four second half goals, 3 -1 to Scotland completely against the run of play for the first hour and the Greeks opening score. Mars is the Greek God of war, but they like their Mars bars Battered in Glasgow, and thats what they dished out in a completely unpredictable turnaround. Mad stuff.

Cuddihy seems to be moving from the Tonight show, I assume he starts in RTÉ in November when Claire Byrne Exits. But will he be able to continue on VMTV, it would be a first for an RTÉ radio presenter.

No he will be leaving The Tonight Show in due course according to Patricia Monahan, RTE’s Head of Audio who was interviewed on the News at One. Though she is happy for him to complete any required notice period before he leaves the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,250 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Can't be on commercial TV if your on RTÉ Radio, I wonder if he might be getting the Q&A programming on Monday Nights in the new year.

Is that really true nowadays though? The days when if you worked for RTE, you worked exclusively for them and them only (as poor Marty Whelan found when he joined the ill-fated Century) are meant to be long gone.

I’m pretty sure Brian Kerr, at least, has appeared on both in the recent past.
