Ray D'Arcy was one of the main Today FM presenters when he presented Your A Star.

I don't think there has ever been a current RTÉ Radio presenter on TV3/VMTV presenting a regular show.

Brian Kerr wasn’t a salaried employee of RTE. Plenty of sporting pundits work for all sorts of different broadcasters. They’re generally just treated as contractors (as opposed to say Darragh Maloney, Joanne Cantwell etc who are RTE employees)

I kind of took that as a given for most on screen talent at this level. Very few would be salaried employees. Maybe it is different for RTE for the guys who have been there a long time but certainly not at VMTV or other media organisations.

Dave Fanning has hosted the Fanning At Whelans music series for the past 6 years on VMTV, but I think hes restricted in promoting it in any way on VMTV (I could be mistaken).

Unsurprisingly they couldn't resist making a balls of it.

I’d presume it was rather them testing something rather than making a balls of anything. They didn’t even announce it

Has anyone else got problems with the sound on VM Play streams of the World cup qualifiers. Sound level going up and down in sync with the commentary, crowd sound surges up in the gaps then drops. Last night the same. Unbearable.

I forgot this, but Dave was largely being sidelined by RTÉ at that point. Is he still on RTÉ GOLD?

He must be the only Radio presenter to have a full time show and also get to present a TV show on TV3/VMTV.

AFAIK at least 4 to 5 of the top ten in any given year are employees, Brian Dobson, Mary Wilson, Daragh Maloney and George Lee are all employees of RTÉ who have featured on the list.

Dave Fanning has 6pm-8pm slot on RTE Gold Monday to Saturday.

Maybe RTE Gold doesn't count as he's a "contractor".

Just tried it now, on a tablet, and working fine, not a VM subscriber either.

It only takes a minute to register on VM, then you can use the app all you want.

That sound issue on VM2 football on Play was present on my phone and on android TV, but sound was fine on the broadcast tv channel, so it's obviously a technical glitch on the sound feed into the streaming server. It was weird, on my phone the match commentator was fully on the left speaker, the pundit, Richard Dunne I think, was analysing only from the right speaker, absolutely no crowd sound, and when both were silent for a half second or more, the crowd effects sound, would suddenly rise to overwhelming level, and vanish the instant either spoke. There's obviously an AGC on the stream mixer that someone has fekd up, but there's no one minding the shop at VM in the evening. Two nights running and its still there.

RTE is still reeling a little from the contractor/prsi debate so a lot of staff there, on screen and otherwise, are now salaried employees.

I assume that Katja Mia, will remain on TSOCS on VMTV, and isn't leaving that show to be a fill in host for a weekend breakfast show on 2FM.

The final League Of Ireland game of the season moving to VM1 this Saturday - which will see live Horseracing, soccer and rugby across 9 hours of live sport which is good to see. First time live LOI on TV3/VM1 since August 2004 (Cork City v Shelbourne)

Looking at their live coverage of the LOI season, and as expected - a huge emphasis on live games from Dublin.

Out of the 35 games - Shamrock Rovers shown 13 times, St Pats & Bohs 11, and Shels 10. Really poor that Waterford was only shown 3 times, and then Sligo and Galway shown twice. Also feel that Waterford v Galway has more on the line this Saturday, instead of what they are showing of Drogheda v Bohs. Cork City was shown 6 times, despite them performing worst this season.

Dublin is where the advertisment peak viewers are. 9 hours, I should feel sorry for sport atheists, but I don't!

Is there a thread for the virgin media app? Recently downloaded and casting, playback issues are atrocious

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,257 ✭✭✭deezell

You're using it on a phone and sending/ mirroring to a TV? That's generally poor due to all the processing and WiFi load, or BT. Can your TV support the Play App directly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭youngblood

The app doesn't seem to be available on the TV, even though it's a relatively new Panasonic.

The main issue it with non box set programmes.

For example, When playing dinner with the enemy, living with Lucy, etc it'll cast and play perfectly until the first commercial break, then stops and defaults to the virgin media logo.

This happens on both iPhone and Android.

As the programme plays perfectly on the device, I thought we could screen cast. It'll cast perfectly until the commercial break then audio will continue to play but the screen will be blank, although still visible on the phone.

Box sets like below deck etc play perfectly via casting

Issue seems mainly to lie with regular virgin programmes and thought others might have had a similar issue

That's what was happening to me with the RTE Player-Firestick. Somebody here showed me how to sideload it directly though.

It blanks the ads on TV versions of the Play app too, just the logo and a jingle, but it always resumes properly after the break ( well, nearly always). The new Play app is only available on android smart tvs afaik, on Sky boxes and on Apple TV boxes also. I have an ancient Apple TV STB, it works really well with my nearly as old Samsung Qled, even takes its commands from the samsung remote. The older app may have worked on some brands and firesticks, but I cant be sure. Have you tried your Browser app on the Panny, it might work, I've noticed that the new browser version works on my Sony, but thats Android so I have the app anyway.

I think I'm at the mercy of the Panasonic app store updating their app range, currently only rte available to install

Have you an Internet browser on your Panasonic TV apps? Try this url in it,

New Panasonic tv use the Amazon Fire os, basically a firestick built in. While there's no VM Play app for Fire afaik, there should be an Amazon Silk browser in the apps. I'd expect this to be capable of displaying and operating the Web version of VM Play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,245 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I can't remember how I did it but I had no problem putting the VM app on my Firestick. It's RTE I had problems with.

OP, try asking in the Firestick thread.

    Or ax googly AI;

To sideload the VM Play app on a Firestick, first enable "Developer options" by going to Settings > My Fire TV > About and pressing the name of your device seven times. Then, go to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer options and turn on "Apps from Unknown Sources" and allow it for the Downloader app. Next, install the Downloader app from the Amazon App Store. Finally, use the Downloader app to find and install the VM Play APK file from its URL

Virgin Play was available on the Firestick app store, I downloaded it onto 2 Firesticks some time ago, there was no need for sideloading. But just checked the Firestick app store now and yes, it's no longer available to download, the TG4 player is still available and of course RTE Player was never on it.

When watching the the virgin media player, why do they put up a banner ad during the program advertising virgin broadband? Has anyone else seen this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,725 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

a hypothetical question but would VMTV still try to block ITV1 in whatever guise it becomes if Sky takes it over on the Sky network and would Sky/Comcast actually wait until the ITV studios programming is up for grabs to launch it in ROI
