Haven't listened to Ray in a while. Had the radio on yesterday for about five minutes and heard him hamfistedly interviewing Richard Hammond, and I thought "Jesus, Ray really is such a useless radio presenter"...

But very surprised it happened like that. Something has obviously gone down. I might feel sorry for him, but I'd have to know the facts first.

Truth is though, he wasn't great. Most of the people who filled in for him were better at it. And that's not just me trying to be mean: it's the truth.

He did but has found time in his busy schedule to fill in for Oliver Callan.

Ya don't say no when a chunky RTE contract is offered - mental health or not.

Also, new Director of Audio Patricia Monahan is known to have the horn for him - professionally.

The Bauerification of RTE will continue.

Like introducing Japanese Knotweed into your garden.

Amazing that he lasted so long at RTE on that enormous salary. It's a good day for the licence fee payer to see the end of that madness.

Never liked him going back to the Today FM days. Found him unbearably smug and self-righteous.

But a weird way for it to end. No doubt the full details will come out in due course

Represents himself in recent years, apparently.

He did a great job yesterday!

The budget increases in the price of porridge and soup in the RTE canteen must have pushed him over the edge.

Mmm interesting, I doubt if its money related something more serious I'd say. He's a sanctimonious git.

I am aware he filled in for callan, but the way dermot whelan was going on at the time when he left today fm, you'd swear he'd never go near a radio studio again. just goes to show, never take their word for it when these big presenter announcements are made.

and RTE having a director of AUDIO ?? - its RADIO ffs, stop trying to make out that radio as we know it is dead just because FM use is dwindling !!.

Wasn't great - you're being too kind! He was Alan Partridge levels of awful anytime I heard him.

guy was stealing a living, and a miserable moaning fecker

Delighted he didn’t get a big send off like Duffy milked

A vastly overpaid presenter ,not his fault RTE poached him from Today fm and paid him silly money so he should be thanking his lucky stars he got away with what he did .A terrible presenter and also useless on the telly maybe apart from the Den which I think was his level .

He stole a living for 11 years. He was competent but not much more to command such a fee. He will be easily replaced.

When Joe Duffy left LiveLine people - especially on here - rejoiced. I felt a bit mixed about it. JD had many faults - lots - but the complete and utter borefest that LL has become - it's absolutely dire, dire stuff now - since he left shows, to me, that he was a bit underrated IMO. The show is struggling without him - it'll probably be cancelled I think.

As for Ray: more or less anyone could do as well, if not better, than him.

Its an opportunity to sort out the daftness of the Radio 1 schedule.

The fact that Oliver Callan is 1 hour and D'Arcy was 90 minutes is farcical, considering they are exactly the same show, with a 5 hour interval in between.

Get rid of the Gay Byrne Hour, presented by Callan. Finish Morning Ireland at 9am. Bring forward the Today programme with Claire Byrne's successor to begin at 9am and include some magazine items on culture and lifestyle from the Callan slate. Finish Today at 11.30am and begin Louise Duffy then, until 1. Start Liveline at 1.30 after a snappier lunchtime News, and finish it at 2.30. Then a 2 hour music and magazine programme to replace D'Arcy and Callan both, including the live music slots and the hard-luck dead donkey stories. Then on to Drivetime at 4.30 and continue as before

He had to get the last word in with Hammond on the whole renewable energy thing - it was a pathetic interview overall and I’d say Hammond put the phone down asking “who da fck was that and how did he get on the radio? ‘

Edit ... don't get me started

Liveline hasn’t been great since Marion left it in my view- it should have stuck to the knitting as opposed to the whinge-fest it became - there’s still a need for a credible consumer focused programme but what Joe did to it was a travesty - less is more with this sort of programme - it was obvious that when Gerry Ryan departed, every day time presenter tried to steel a bit of what he did best and all failed miserably trying

I didn't mind Joe tbh. Okay, the last few years he was taking the piss with so, so many days off and his ego had got a bit out of control - but I used to listen a fair bit back in the day and, to me, the show was good car crash radio.

But, honestly, it's just gotten ludicrously bad now. They've had some complete non-entity presenting for the past few weeks: it's truly woeful.

I’ll take your word for it as I’m working throughout the day- but I swear if I find myself in years to come in retirement listening to such rubbish day in day out, I’m off to Switzerland for a date with a suicide pod - what a way to spend one’s day

I don't particularly mind Darcy but that interview was cringe inducing. I was thinking the same about Hammond's thoughts after he put down the phone.

No, that's Shane Byrne you are thinking of. Shay is the guy who is supposed to wake you up between 5.30 and 6am in the mornings, and he has also filled in for Louise Duffy and Ronan Collins before that.

Just came here to say- great news! Another mediocrity off the payroll. It was absolutely scandalous what he was being paid. Devoid of personality or charisma. It beggars belief how he made a career in the business.

He has a lot to thank Zig and Zag for.

He was the straight man- they were the talent.

mediocre is a fooking compliment to describe D’arcy’s broadcasting prowess

I rarely listened to him but as I was channel surfing a few weeks ago I tuned in and heard him interviewing Barry McGuigan.
It was error laden. When speaking to McGuigan, he asked about the world title flight held at Loftus Hall. Barry corrected him and said it was Loftus Road.
He then went on to say that it was the first time the BBC had shown a world title fight, again Barry corrected him, said that it wasn’t and named a few others that they’d televised. The lack of any research was shockingly obvious. He commented that he didn’t drink or smoke (again) just like Barry, however one of them is a former world boxing champion and the other is Ray D’Arcy!

He’s been stealing a living for quite a while and fair play to him, he’s been riding that train for all it’s worth. The fact that he got 11 years out of it is mind is testament to the terrible management at RTE

He said years ago that if Enda Kenny became taoiseach, he'd leave the country. Enda did, but unfortunately Ray didn't keep his word. Maybe he is now?

Really? Jesus, that poor women. So many people in RTE used her.

Why is Whelan the front runner?

Shay is a grafter. He was so happy to get a chance at tubs old slot. I felt sorry for him when he had to go back to the early mornings.

I just heard the news on the 6 o'clock news on RTE Radio 1 that Gray @®$€¥ is gone. Good riddance! 🎉🎉🎉

It's the best news I've heard in ages. He's talentless in my opinion, he should have been given the boot years ago. More than that, he's obnoxious. And that's me being polite. I can't use the words that truly describe him. As someone else said, he's been living off the credibility of Zig & Zag for decades.

And the money he was "earning" was scandalous. Like Joe Duffy, he spent a lot of time skiving off work. I'm glad Gray didn't get to say goodbye on air.
