I'd strongly suggest a rebrand if I was asked myself to distance themselves from the piss-poor legacy it has now.

Not to mention that hopefully dumping that awful green paintjob makes this even better news!

We used the airport bus last week, and everything was on time. The green buses seemed a bit battered inside, with the hand-rest/handles broken off most seats. The digital clocks were way off on both buses too, which is irritating, given that many people are clock-watching as they approach the airport.

Do Callinans still do a lot of CIE tour work?

There would be a lot of coaches sitting around in winter months that could be put to work

yes I reluctantly used it myself recently andall worked ok. Well, I think a 726 didn't turn up but a 750 was ok for me too as I wa sjust going to the Red Cow. There was no inbound 750 showing on the tracker, but then it just randomly turned up on time.

Side note. the state of the bus park in the airport is comical - it's absolutely plastered in stains from oil leaks from buses. I'd say there's one main culprit.😂

Do Go Ahead ever use it? Their buses seem to be leaving oil behind too. I passed one of their double deckers earlier today on the M50, and there were very fresh oil stains all over the rear. Seeing a lot of them on recovery trucks too. Dublin Coach isn't the only operator with a neglected fleet.

No GAI use the red carpark for outbased buses.

Very interesting article about Callinans purchase of Dublin Coach, sounds like very good news for Dublin Coach customers:

    https://www.route-one.net/news/irish-operator-dublin-coach-is-purchased-by-callinan-coaches/

Over 40 new Van Hool T-range and Altano coaches have been purchased in 2024 and 2025.

    ……

A complete replacement of the Dublin Coach fleet is planned in the longer-term. Mr Callinan adds that he has long favoured Van Hool coaches and that the Galway operator knows those products “inside out,” with vehicles from the marque being well suited to the high-mileage utilisation of scheduled services.

    ……

Some Van Hools from the Callinan fleet may move to Dublin Coach as an early part of the transition.

Van Hool (VDL) make some of the best coaches around and them coming to Dublin Coach will be a big uprage for the passenger experience.

    On branding:

The green-based Dublin Coach brand and identity will be retained in the medium-term, but Mr Callinan adds that it may evolve beyond that.

I think they should definitely rebrand, perhaps not Callinans, something catchier like "City Express", etc. I'd also get whoever designed the Citylink Cork (half GoBus/hlaf Citylink) livery to do the Livery for them, easily the best livery around IMO.

    Interesting tidbit:

While Dublin Coach is focused on scheduled coach services, including one cross-border route between Dublin and Belfast

Perhaps just poor reporting as the route isn't active, but I wonder if Callinans would think about giving the route a go again, but this time with nice Van Hool coaches, might give Aircoach a run for their money given their poor coach choices, they (with Citylink) already ran them off the Galway route.

hopefully soon we’ll also see them on the 726 as well I got the bus to Kildare town today was an hour and 10 minutes late

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

They'd have a have a tough job competing against Dublin Express on Dublin to Belfast.

Yes, but the goal would be for them to target Aircoach. I believe the route can sustain two operators, like most intercity routes do, but Aircoach are the weaker of the two, with some pretty poor decisions on coach purchases, operational and customer support issues.

Odd coach choices, with limited leg room and they got rid of their local Irish support, it is operated out of the UK now and they haven't a clue.

Along comes Callinans, with brand new, very nice Vanhool coaches, with lots of legroom, Irish owned and with local knowledge support. Aircoach could find themselves in big trouble.

Worth noting that Callinans are now one of the largest operators in Ireland and much larger operator then Aircoach in Ireland. With the addition of the DC fleet, Callinans will have a fleet of around 130 coaches, Aircoach are at less then 50! (DX even smaller around 30).

I'm not saying they will do this in the short term, I'm certain they will have their hands full getting DC into order and shape. But longer term, it is something they might think about.

there are 2012 one so we’ll probably see even newer ones over the next weeks and months

They’ll also have a tough job winning back lost customers on the 726 to Dublin Airport. We used to use the bus from Newbridge but after missing our flight a few years ago due to non showing we never would rely on them again.

I've used the Translink, Busaras-Airport-North, and it does get full. They provide a fast reliable service

The X1 is at least 20 minutes slower (often quiet a bit more) then Dublin Express or Aircoach services and Dublin Express use far nicer coaches with far more legroom, one of the nicest coaches in the country.

The only reason to use this service really is if you are going to Newry or one of the other stops in between or if you just aren't aware of the DX service.

I consider this more of a stopping service, then one of the direct, non stop competitors.

The X2 is non stop between Dublin Airport and Belfast, but then it is only the same speed as DX/Aircoach, while being much less frequent and again DX have them beat on their coach.

As an aside, one thing to keep in mind, the old Dublin Coach service was non stop between Dublin City and Belfast. It didn't stop at Dublin Airport and thus it was the fastest way to travel between Dublin City and Belfast. That is possibly a unique feature that Callinans could bring back if they were to try the route again.

A re-brand may help with that. Along of course with new coaches, properly maintained, proper customer support, etc. They will need to rebuild trust with the travelling public. But Callinans are a totally different type of operator, one of the best in the country, very different to the DC of the past.

I don't think that there is any chance of another operator going into the Belfast to Dublin route and doing well unless they have very deep pockets, with there already being three operators there now.

It's still curious how this network has come under the Callinan banner rather than ComfortDelGro who own CityLink, I am curious if that has I suppose the argument might have been crossover on services from Limerick and Ennis, but the CityLink service does serve the airport and the DUblin Coach one doesn't. Or did the Dublin Coach service have a lot of transfer passengers to the Airport at Red Cow Luas?

Also notice that Callinan's have sent a bunch of newer Citaros into Limerick to replaced the battered Dublin Coach ones.

DC had been mostly using ex London Enviro 400s which they had purchased from Callinan's about 6 months ago. Those buses are now being used as Luas replacement buses which Callinan's have the contract for. 310 is supposed to be going to BE soon.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 23,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

I wonder if DC had actually purchased those Enviros or were just leasing them? The Callinans website mentions they have a fleet of 50 Enviro 400, perhaps they just never updated it after selling them to DC. I suppose it doesn’t matter now either way.

p_haugh:Great to see nice new Mercs already hitting the streets of Limerick, hopefully a good sign of big improvements to the DC service.

I suppose the answer to that is simple enough, Callinans bought it, not ComfortDelGro, they are different companies after all. It sounds like Callinans want to step out from just being a sub contractor and want to become a customer facing player. They say that in the interview with them.

ComfortDelGro might have had the financial resources to outbid Callinans, but I’m wondering if they were worried if they would have gotten the permission from the competition authority given their purchase of GoBus, domination of the Galway route and existing services on the Limerick and criticism of the authority allowing the GoBus purchase, they might have been concerned if it would face difficulties. They may even have been supportive of Callinans getting it, better them, then say someone like Dublin Express, which would be more of a treat to Citylink.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the relationship between Citylink and Callinans continues now, specially relating to the Eireagle service.

Callinan's were using those Enviros on the Intel contract which they lost to Barton's a few years ago also letting all the drivers on it go in the process. They're heaps of scrap anyway I'd imagine their worth very little.

I've noticed a few Galway registered Vanhools on the DC services recently so I think the changeover is underway. Anyone noticed any service improvement?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭Jameslee23

the 726 still needs an improvement I was waiting a hour and half in the red cow for it last week maybe in the next few months that will change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,916 ✭✭✭✭Jamie2k9

I took one of a aytes this week and full air conditioning was working and it had a deep clean inside. Might be wrong but might have also provided some additional college capacity on 600. Saw an extra bus waiting at Waterford Sunday afternoon.

Other changes is communication via social media.

    Also recuriting Duty Manager Ennis.

The white buses on the 300 are all ex Citylink vehicles, mainly 151 and 161 reg Vanhool's and 171 reg Volvo's, i saw two on it this week 171G2970 & 171G2971. Obviously, these were new to GoBus but later passed to Citylink. Theres rumors that the 5 181 Volvo's with Citylink are coming off service shortly and they could end up on the 300 too. Nothing yet about the Citylink Tourismo's coming off but there is a fleet upgrade for the Citylink fleet coming over the next few months.

Another interesting note, I was up at the yard a few weeks ago and alot of the old run down coaches that were sitting in that yard for months/years have been removed. Only a few Tourismo's remain at the yard and the Ayat deckers too obviously. The luas shuttles buses are currently stored here too which makes sense. I spotted 2 of them run down old Setra's still parked there but i've been told they are awaiting to be taken away shortly for scrap. All the ex Stagecoach deckers are gone, all bar 1 Setra is gone (the brown one is still being used on the 750 for the moment) even the King Long is gone!

A new bus has appeared on the 300 162G158 a green Vanhool overdeck that was previously on Citylink service. Legal lettering still says "Callinan Coaches" even though it's wrapped in green now!

Interesting that they're going by 'Dublin Coach' and not Big Green Bus or any other moniker. I would have thought they would now have to scale to launch something new and catchy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,118 ✭✭✭Vic_08

No doubt Callinans have their hands full dealing with the clown car act they have bought.

If they have plans to rebrand it would be wise to wait until they have fully gotten rid of the junk fleet and no doubt serious work practice issues that came with the package.

I would also expect that running Citylink branded/liveried vehicles on Dublin Coach routes would be a hard no, last thing they will want is to sour their relationship with Citylink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

Have heard that the 310 contract in Limerick has been extended now until the end of February possibly because BE don't have the buses/drivers as of yet.
