They've an Irish Day Tours Transit on the Kildare to Portarlington service and they had a few Irish Day Tours coaches on the 300 recently too!

YouTube review of traveling on the Big Green Bus. It nicely sums up their standard of service.

I thought to myself that it must be one of the 10 year old Tourismos judging by the state of it, not that a vehicle should be in that state internally at any age.

My jaw hit the floor when I saw it was actually one of the 2018 batch.

That seat 1t 14:37 is almost horizontal too!

The 171 Vanhool was spotted this morning in green heading to Cork on the 600! Not sure if it was painted or wrapped

White Vanhool on the 300 today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭Jameslee23

someone was telling me today but I don’t know how true it is that the 300 might be getting dropped in January due to lack of buses

Booked a ticket yesterday for Mrs for 9.40am service today from Kildare Village to Ennis.

Got an email last night saying that service was cancelled, and she was to get 8.40am or 10.40am service from the Village.

So we turned up for the 8.40am service which never came.

She is now down there waiting for the 5pm return service (as on her ticket) to the Village, which is actually now leaving at 6pm ???

I saw the new VanHool they got today on Bachelor's Walk. Guessing it's only of time before there'll be panels held on with cable ties and windows missing etc.

That would leave Limerick and Dublin without an inter-city bus service between them…

The JJK service would still connect the 2 via the city, along with the Eireagle & Flightlink if going direct to the Airport. In saying that, the 300 is the more frequent & more direct service, so there would still be a big reduction in options.

Yes the Kavanaghs one takes 4.5hrs city-city and runs 4 times per day Monday-Friday and 3 times Saturday-Sunday. It's an auful pity the Green Party allowed Bus Eireann to walk away from this route. I guess it will be the car for many from January onwards

If it was to happen, I'm certain Citylink (Eireagle), Dublin Express or Aircoach would be straight in to replace the service. They would very happily take over this route and expand their network.

But this rumour doesn't make any sense. Surely this is one of DC's most important routes, their bread and butter and I'd be shocked if it isn't very profitable for them.

And even if they wanted to step back from it, surely it would make more sense to sell the route license or that part of the company to Citylink/DE/Aircoach/GAI and make some money off it, rather then just dropping it.

To be honest we have heard rumours like this constantly over the years about DC, but also others like Aircoach and most of them have not been true, so I'd be dubious of this rumour and just wait and see what happens if anything.

Do they have a Plan B for these situations? What happens to the people heading to the airport for a flight, who will probably miss their flight if they're delayed for more than 30 minutes or so.

I think if you read through this thread you will realise that the best way to avoid this situation is to try and take another option if that is a possibility.

Even if it means a slightly longer journey or waiting around a bit at the airport, it would be well worth the reduction in stress that the fear of missing, or the cost of actually missing, your flight would cause.

Essentially they're saying it's not commercially viable.

I would say that the fact it will free up a couple of vehicles as well is a factor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭Jameslee23

it also probably means that the buses there were using on the 816 are probably going to get sold now

Not that I'd be one disappointed if they went and someone else stepped in, but really this is no indication that more will go. If anything I'd say this is where the rumour about the 300 above stemmed from, this route going makes a lot more sense then the 300 going.

More likely to just use them to cover the remaining routes. I can't see much demand for coaches maintained by DC.

Do they even have enough money to run their other routes left in their business?

It is a weird one, routes like the 300 most be very profitable, specially when you think about how little they spend on new coaches and maintenance, while the route is always very busy.

If I was to guess the parent company has a large amount of debt due to other bad business decisions, court cases regarding the Dublin Airport car park, etc. It is the only thing that makes sense.
