Only reddit and Instagram mentioning the same story as 'The Ditch', I think!

So you can’t actually provide any quote to back up your lies - but you’ll keep repeating them anyway.

There is no other source for it, someone on reddit has pointed out the David Maxwell TD said he would be using it, which if he is, negates the story https://www.northernsound.ie/news/cootehill-fine-gael-office-to-remain-open-249531

Not sure the debate at 5 be any good. Sarah and Cormac will only be looking for a 'gotcha' moment.

Id like to see it explored more thoroughly by the mainstream. They clearly done their due diligence RE the Gavin Fiasco. As the story develops we will get to the heart of it no doubt. Il be interested to see if it does come up during the debate at 5pm.

But given that it is no where present on the mainstream (iv searched RTE, the indo, times etc) - im unsure if it will, at least until its been explored thoroughly

Not saying this is the reason but in the constitution the title President is always translated into English but Taoiseach is not.

I'm no fan of Catherine Connolly and she won't even get a preference from me but clearly her opponents are struggling to get anything stick.

Now they've tried to generate a crisis for her from a hypothetical.

I didn't think I could become more disillusioned with politics here than earlier in the week. Yet here we are.

I believe it's simply because Taoiseach directly translates to "chief" and not to prime minister, so it's not a translation of the title.

If anyone in FG or FF said they self funded a trip to Syria, then had to do a uturn and say it was taxpayer funded, they would be crucified

If they were asked would they hire a rapist and gave anything other than an unequivocal no, they would also be crucified.

Neither of these are really deal breakers for CC, but she shouldn't get a pass from scrutiny. They are questions on her own words and her own actions, hardly a witch hunt

Please enlighten us what is the most recent story?

    • No main Irish media outlets appear to have published a more recent, prominent story about Heather Humphreys’ alleged avoidance of property tax on her former Fine Gael office than the original Ditch article
    • Consequently, there is no evidence of this story being escalated by major outlets since the original Ditch report.

I was talking to someone today who said he's voted for a Fianna Fáil candidate in almost every election since Sean Lemass was leader, and had no intentions of even giving Catherine Connolly a preference. Since Jim Gavin exited the race, he didn't know what way to vote, if at all. The front page of today's Irish Times has convinced him to vote for Connolly. He held it up, pointed at the Connolly hit-piece on the left side of the front page, and then at the Humphreys puff-piece on the right and just laughed at the obviousness of it. Irish voters aren't stupid. This isn't Britain - what worked against Jeremy Corbyn isn't likely to work here.

The President withheld consent, Connolly breached that consent, that is all.

The "hit piece" is an entirely factual argument about how she lied about funding for a trip that she has lied or obfuscated on multiple times and was incredibly controversial.

The "puff piece" is a photograph. The actual article is about the Jin Gavin "debacle".

She wouldn't have so many so-called hit pieces if she didn't keep lying, prevaricating and making controversial statements.

    Yes indeed.

This was the story, the Eirigi one , that flummoxed me as someone who would be fairly middle and leaning left .

I have not voted FG no 1 in many many years and am surprised that I feel some sympathy for HH and not a whole lot for CC .

Her answers to this ongoing story , and yes it is a scandal , really worry me because she and her supporters are just doubling down on how wonderful she is and not giving a sense of something pretty basic for the electorate ...

can she be trusted as President ?

It's not about rehabilitation , it's not about smearing an otherwise good candidate . It's about her coming out admitting she took this too far with the Eirigí person with a serious gun crime conviction in Leinster House and undertaking to not do something like that again .

It's very simple …I asked another poster if this had been a right wing person, a member of a far right group , who had just been released on good behaviour after a serious conviction for gun possession in the SSC , would she have been ok with another member of the Dáil swiping them into LH and circumventing the security vetting process for people working in Dáil Eireann ?

They said yes of course , but I doubt it .

Supporters hand waving this away and accusing others who bring it up of digging dirt or smearing CC , or that people " do not understand the situation " or are" against rehabilitation" is hypocritical .

I have seen those accusations levelled at me and other posters looking for some answers here along with stupid stuff like "you were never going to vote for her anyway "from one particular mind-reader !

I have never espoused views of intolerance as a lot of people here would know , but common sense and honesty has to foremost in answers to people .

This is not helpful to this debate and people should try to explain with honesty , as in fairness you have done throughout this thread , what they think is going on with CC and why we should trust her as President .

I am left / centre left , but I am worried she may be too extreme for this position despite being a talented speaker ,and an impressive lady in her own right .

I have many times expressed admiration for some of her straight talking and speeches in the Dáil before this election .

However her utterances on Neo liberalism , the military build up in Germany and Europe ,NATO to blame for Putin's invasion and aggression , are more than a bit concerning for many people not to mention the Eirigí scandal .

I paid scant attention to her past affiliations and those she supported … GoD , and Clare Daly and Mick Wallace thinking this was just a left wing alliance functional voting group in the Dáil , but am now looking at this with increasing alarm over her judgement .

And not hearing anything in the last week that has dispelled those doubts . Especially on Boards .

The office in question is a constituency office, therefore the commercial property tax is not due.

    Either:

    1. The Ditch didn't know it was still a constituency office, which they would have confirmed within a few seconds of Googling. This would not reflect well on the standard of journalism at Ditch HQ.
    2. The Ditch knew it was still a constituency office, and they therefore knew that it was exempt from property tax, but they decided to leave these crucial details out of their article.

When people wonder why people don't trust The Ditch, this sort of thing is why.

This is why the Trump comparisons are drawn. Not because their political positions are similar but because of their ability to brazen their way through being caught lying.

CC claimed she funded that trip herself, now it has been proven otherwise. She's caught in a barefaced lie. But her supporters have the blinkers on, much like the MAGA crew across the Atlantic. At this stage the only thing that'll stop her being president is being named in the Epstein files!

That's the issue i have both with MAGA (right-wing) and the current CC campaign (left-wing). Their supporters are like followers of a religion, any facts pointing to the imperfection of their messiah are ignored.

Well it wont count as such, it will merely be spoiled. Doubt the message would even be read TBH. Until the 'Steen et al' group endorsed 'Vote Gavin Protest', that was an option i guess.

In terms of my voting preferences - I used to be Labour all the way. The Joan Burton era diminished their standing for me, but they always get a high preference none the less. Social Democrats too.

I was always very suspicious of Sinn Fein, for a long time. Never really viewed them as a party of the left. Eoin O Broin changed that entirely for me. A phenomenal politician, and one of the best the Irish Left has ever produced. Then i did start voting for them, and other lefties, hoping for a credible alternative to FFG.

The disconnect that occured with me, was with the Clare Daly adjacent Left Wing Activist class of candidate. For me the left should be about

    • raising people out of poverty, and lessening the wealth divide.
    • investment in communities that go undervalued
    • dealing with homelessness, and the housing crisis
    • returning to an ACTUAL 'Free third Level Education' system, as opposed to what we have now
    • regulation of the certain industries that have been de-regulated by generations of FFG duopoly
    • I could go on - transport, the health service, etc etc

Daly, Boyd Barrett et al, tended to be more about shouting at Capitalism, and western Imperialism. You could add the aforementioned 'NATO expansion' into it too. Their conduct during the opening months of the Ukraine War, tarnished them in my eyes. And i have disconnected from that branch of the Radical left now.

I went into this election hoping that i was wrong about Connolly. But as it has rolled on, my fears have been realized. And thats why i cant vote for her. The best i can hope for, is that the Left Wing alliance survives this election, and enters the next General/Locals prepared to really take on FFG. I also hope that they put a lid on the more radical activist class, lest they cause more havok.

If HH has half a brain she'll ask CC if she would consider hiring one of the far right types who have been jailed for their actions in the Dublin riots when they have served their sentences and been rehabilitated. I'd love to hear her answer to that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,834 ✭✭✭MFPM

I'd like to say I'm shocked by your endorsement of the most ring wing candidate in the election but my only shock has been it's taken you so long to announce it. Based on your posts you seem to be very much an Alan Kelly type of 'left'.

You're endorsing the representative of the party that voted to allow migrants drown in the Mediterranean, the party that emphatically endorsed Von Der Leyen, the most slavish supporter of Netanyahu in the EU including defending the attacks on hospitals, schools, universities and deliberately starving children and not to forget the homeless children in hotels tonight as a direct result of a housing policy supported by FG and HH.

I was just listening to Barry Lenihsn there before the debate, now granted he's a clown but the way he framed things around CC is so disingenuous...that's what you're rewarding too.

I sincerely hope CC wins this election and your betrayal of any pretence of being on the left is left in the ashes of HHs failure!

    she has no constituency though

She didn’t seek reelection, so how can it still be a constituency office

It’s right there in the article

She was exempt from paying business rates (also known as commercial rates) till November 2024 while the property was used as her constituency office.

Councils apply these rates to commercial and industrial property to fund public lighting, roads, local economic development and community services.

Because Humphreys didn’t seek reelection to the Dáil in 2024 she was no longer entitled to this exemption by November that year.

Under section 10(2)(A) of the Local Government Rates and other Matters Act 2019, Humphreys was obliged to notify Cavan County Council within 10 days that her property wasn’t a constituency office anymore.

If you want to debate International Relations, Politics, or left wing politics in general, im happy to do so. I challenged you repeatidly on this thread, to debate the Germany Comments, in particular, and i didnt hear back.

I'd like to say I'm shocked by your endorsement of the most ring wing candidate in the election

Its a two horse race. For the Aras, not the office of Taoiseach. I have to judge candidates as to their suitability for the role. My Choice is between an activist class left-winger, who courts nothing but controversy. Or a lady who is a non-entity, and who, frankly, has less charisma than anyone i have ever seen up for election. Its for the Aras, iv made my mind up, and stated why.

In terms of your international political views, we could debate them. But you will make no progress within the anarchical international system, by following the policies of Catherine Connolly or Clare Daly. They are divisive to international cooperation and alliance building. Which are vital for a small island nation like Ireland.

I sincerely hope CC wins this election and your betrayal of any pretence of being on the left is left in the ashes of HHs failure!

Your entitled to say it, and go ad hominem if you want. But i have stood where i am, politically, all my life. If anyones political opinions have changed, they have not been mine. The left has facilitated loud mouthed activists to ruin their ability to appeal the the electorate. Which is part of the reason we keep losing out. The game is not, who is the loudest lefty - its winning elections. And pal, you aint helpin. Your heart is in the right place, and thats admirable; but we need to WIN enough to form a government.

No offense, and by all means keep calling it a betrayal. Im not bothered, iv explained my position.
