'She in fact is showing that she herself has no respect for laws'

    What laws are they?

Just my thoughts for tonight. Relax and sleep posters, it's just the first opinion poll, margin for error and undecideds still leaves it a tight race. The actual election isn't for 2 weeks and 4 days. The country won't shut down or change much if Connolly wins and the Russians won't be invited to or try to take us over either.

The overdraft rate, it he was to borrow the money over that period of time would have been over 10% most if not all of that time.

I think CC's supporters are very relaxed - she was the outsider, now she's arguably the favourite though she may fall short at the end - she's causing hyperventilation in the centre/centre right media, and the NATO bros are hysterical - what's not to be relaxed about!!😊

Jim Gavin's supporters are far from relaxed, utterly perplexed as to why he's incapable of coming up with a convincing narrative over €3,000 FFS, laughable this guy wants to hold public office!

And HH, god love her, she thought it was a coronation for her and now she's out of retirement and has to actually work for this..she wasn't prepared for this…

This is true… The first opinion poll for the 2011 race had David Norris leading on 21%. In theory lots of work for all candidates

In practice I don’t think the undecideds will sway to Connolly. Anybody supporting her has likely already decided to

    And then there were two.

The decision to keep Steen and Sheridan off the ballot looking absolutely farcical now. A two horse race in a system where we use proportional representation. Shame on those who brought this fiasco about.

    Game changer -

    Todays poll is now irrelevant

Honestly, I think it was the right call for the man. Walking away in a dignified fashion, now

As opposed to the near certainty of coming last

But it is a game changer -

Sic semper tyrannis - thus always to Tyrants

Micheal Martin...you abdolute plonker, you should step aside now, FF have no candidate now and that's on YOU

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,845 ✭✭✭MFPM

Really strange decision, huge blow to MM and FF. HH big boost to her campaign, she should win now, I suspect.

Was just typing up that still nobody in FF had commented on Gavin today on socials but I've seen it's official now that he's withdrawn.

I'm not surprised given the body language he had in the post-debate interview when he squirmed over the Examiner journalist's question if he broke the law by not registering with RTB.

He waded into some deep waters unknowingly and think he's wise to get out and salvage his reputation before he drowns. I also hope he pays that renter back the 3k.

I wonder are the ballot papers printed yet

    I was on the money.

With 3 weeks to go, it's not impossible that only one candidate remains by polling day. Then what for democracy?

Jayus. I don’t think many other people would have done what Gavin has done by stepping aside.

Very smart move restored his reputation and made himself look honourable. At least he holds himself to high standards.

Fair play Jim Gavin. Best decision he has made in this campaign.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭Downlinz

This also highlights the problem with just 3 candidates, if either of those remaining were to have a sudden health scare or change of mind because of the nature of the campaign the public will be left with a coronation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,819 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Then nothing. Many Irish presidents have been elected unopposed.

I'm not shocked though, its been a horrifically bad campaign.

The main question is, where and how does this come back to Micheál Martin, and to a lesser extent Jack Chambers

Pathetic election with only 2 on the ballot. FFG now just running 1 candidate which will consolidate the vote.

He dropped out because he made a balls of himself and was completely out of his depth. I don’t see what’s honourable about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,669 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I'm quite enjoying that Gavin has made an absolute holy show of MM by withdrawing more than two weeks before the election. MM has been almost dictatorial in insisting that Gavin be the FF candidate and also blocking any other candidates from getting onto the ballot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,845 ✭✭✭MFPM

Those two had 7 years to prepare for this and left it until a few weeks out, hardly demonstrates a serious appproach to the process. They also had the opportunity to stand in the LE, GE or EE and chose not to.

if the bank made the error of not cancelling the standing order (after receiving an instruction to do so), then they should have refunded the tenant at the time. The customer is no longer out of pocket & the bank - if they want to recoup their loss - can contact the landlord’s bank & request the funds back.

FF just handed FG the presidency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,147 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

He could have continued on bluffing his way through it. That is what most politicians would have done.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

The fiasco of only two candidates on the ballot is totally on FF and FG. It was made clear they would block 'any' candidate trying to go the Oireachtas or council route, even if they had been campaigning for a year.

Restored his reputation!? It's in tatters compared to where it was before he took the daft decision to stand.

Not sure what to make of the whole Jim Gavin saga. The man was a Dublin GAA legend and was well thought of in general GAA circles having spearheaded the new football rules which have improve it as a spectacle. Served his country and had a good job in Irish Aviation.

Now his reputation is in tatters, it seems as if he was in the wrong over the overpaid rent. And now the whole country knows about it. Hard to believe that he put himself forward while knowing this grenade was lurking in the background.

Now it leaves us pick between the loony leftie, who is principled, honest and a good speaker but who will not compromise her principles. I fear those principles would be put ahead of Ireland's interests should she be elected.

Or a fairly mediocre former government minister who's greatest appeal is that she probably won't cause any controversy and also show the hard-core unionists up North that we've moved on down here from sectarian politics.

    A rather uninspiring choice.
