Dont think it was unfair. CC didnt bring it up and when asked it was the perfect example to use the language. Not her fault 2 other candidates can't speak irish.

Twitter is great viewing, everyone in Fine Gael saying how well Heather done

Everyone on the left saying how well Connolly done

Not a word from anyone in Fianna Fail

Failing to return the money that to the tenant tells us a lot about Jim Gavin , and it’s not pleasant.

Not remembering about it tells us even more, maybe he could pull the “On mature reflection “ card out of the pack ?

I really cannot fathom how JG, and indeed his advisors, thought that saying "I was in financial difficultly at the time" was going to be an effective way to defend himself. What about the financial difficulty of his tenant? And if he wants to be the President of the Irish people, he should understand that landlords will elicit very little sympathy from the Irish people at the moment.

Gavin is an atrocious choice- I find him even poor on the defence stuff which should be his forte given his professional background

I think Jim Gavin should gracefully bow out. He has no plausible retort to the money owed to tenant story which as I understand hasn't been paid back. Also not registering his tenancy with the relevant authorities isn't a good look either. Apart from being high profile, he has been a weak candidate from the get go.

Looks like Catherine Connolly's to lose.

He might be the best in the World but you often encounter people who wiggle into positions and they are totally out of their depth.

definitely not, especially in GAA circles- that’s mainly all that would have counted. It’s clear to me anyhow he’s not that technically competent as regards as policy and detail

Connolly got 32% in a poll, so two-thirds agree with me.

It not at all reassuring that many in the electorate are irresponsible, that is how the likes of Orbán are able to gain power.

As stated in today's press, HH should emphasise her credentials to promote reconciliation and unity v/v North and South.Other themes I think she could score on would be more encouragement for women and particularly girls in sport as well as community sporting facilities indoor and outdoor for young people ( sadly lacking in many areas ).

    The Irish does concern me.

There may be limitations to Humphreys work as a minister, but we can't say that other candidates would have done better because they haven't done anything. This whole, what about the government thing, simply penalises people who actually did something. They had a mixed bag performance, which is almost inevitable, and people cherry pick the bad bits.

A president has F all to do with sporting facilities outside of opening them..

Her big issue is she has served in an FG government that could have done significant things about the issues you mention but haven't. She's also promised while being part of that government she would learn Irish but obviously never has. As for the cross border stuff...a lot of people will see SF giving their backing to CC as being significant in that regard..

To be fair, HH spoke some Irish.

Heather has tried from her posters to her election page to distance herself from FG, and does not want to get involved in any discussion about what FGs record has been for over a decade now

What I have noticed is she hasn't mentioned Simon Harris in the 2 debates or any interviews I've heard from her. That's probably a wise move on her behalf though

She is right to take that angle, I agree. However I do think it will be her downfall(serving in FG governments). I thought side stepping the promise she made to learn Irish was interesting. While she spoke a few words it was embarrassing for someone who had planned to learn the language a decade ago and who would have known the question was going to come up.

She's running as a FG candidate. Everyone knows she a FG candidate

Trying to distance herself from the actual party she is running for is embarrassing

1/3 haven't decided. Don't knows excluded leaves it at:

    Connolly 46% Humphreys 33% Gavin 21%

With second preferences Connolly is elected on 53%.

I'll let her know that the public are against her. 😁 And I'll also make the Irish public aware that they're 'irresponsible' as you've noted.

In terms of women & girls in sport how would HH have an advantage?

A crusty lefty looney or a Closet Orange order member left! we really are cooked!

I would think this could see a record low voter turnout!

Voters who wanted other candidates on the ballot should be annoyed at them for not working on getting on the ballot for months not just a few weeks

That money was just resting in his account!!

I watched most of the debate. Connolly came accross as Comfortable, but like when I heard her on the radio a few weeks back, she avoided many questions.

Gavin struggled with the rent question, and Humphries verbal tick (eh) made her sound less fluent, but she had some good answers.

Still undecided. Connolly or Humphries for me.

I just wish Connolly would answer the questions she's asked. When she's avoiding things she has a big grin on her face - same when the idiot Burke questioned her at UCG.

I saw McAleese first hand in Beijing and she was powerful with the audience, and that's what I'm looking for in our president. A real leader.

I just havent seen it in any of the candidates this time around. I may end up in the polling booth not having made my mind up.

Looking into the JG story on RTE, it seems a banking error led to the tenant overpaying JG, and JG never returned the money. Something very similar happened to me when I moved out of an apartment, and I received the refund within 24 hours of explaining it to the landlord. No reason why JG couldn't have returned the money considering he should never have had it in the first place.

If that's the story, how in god's name would he have let it fester this long?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,303 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

Of course she has, the record of FG is a matter for the general election, not the Presidential election.

And I'm pretty sure that she would not be beholden to Harris, whereas Gavin would lean on MM for advice.

These harmless kid gloves "debates" feel like a job interview for Busáras instead of Áras an Uachtaráin.
