Hi all. I'm looking at buying one of the above, budget is max 15k. Any idea which is better choice or anything i should look out for? I like both but i'm leaning more towards the honda at the moment.

Yes, 1.6 diesel in the CRV and 2.0 diesel in the toyota. The toyota 2.0 is based on the bmw n47 engine, which is the one with the timing chain issues.

I was under the impression that the Rav 4 up until 2016 was a solid machine and that is why they are so expensive.

I think they are a Euro 5 diesel, the models after that would be Euro 6 diesels and like most vehicles after that change, not as good.

I ended up putting a deposit on a crv. It was high spec, 161, clean and pretty nice to drive. It was the 120hp engine though, which is a pity as i wanted the 160hp version. €13,250

It was really close with the rav4 but the toyota 2.0 diesel is based on the notorious n47 bmw engine (the timing chain one). I know bmw really only suffered from this pre 2015 and toyota probably improved on it but still.. Also, i think the crv has a nicer cabin, with better tech connectivity etc. I thought the 120hp engine would be very slow and a deal breaker, but i was actually surprised. Its decent enough for me.

The Honda would have been my choice aswell.

Spend a couple hundred on a reliable ECU remapping service if you want to bring it up close to the 160bhp model.
