If we incorporate in Ireland and apply for a VAT number and are turned down for it can that be appealed. We make all of our supplies to the EU but hardly any domestically in Ireland. Why is getting a VAT number in Ireland a retrospective thing when in the rest of the EU it isn't?

Revenue are hard on this because perviously fraudsters would set up Irish companies, register for VAT, buy goods VAT-free from another EU country, sell them on with VAT, and then disappear without paying the VAT.

Also Revenue don’t want to issue VAT numbers lightly in case they’re used purely to claim large refunds without real trading

you can appeal but you will have to prove your case, evidence of establishment, evidence of trade and evidence you must have a vat number to avoid non compliance with EU law.

Revenue are a law to themselves so keep your tone compliant, not confrontational.

will you have a presence in Ireland, as in office, staff, directors etc. If not you wont get an irish vat number. You can apply and revenue will ask you for a load of information and make you jump through loads of hoops but if you dont have the basics they wont issue the number. Its getting harder and harder to get a vat number. If you want to ask any specific questions drop me a DM.

Thanks guys, we are 10 years old based in UK and looking to set up in the EU as the dreaded Brexit was a disaster and holds us back. Trading without a VAT number is not really a good idea. We would incorporate in Ireland hold stock in Ireland and are currently looking into the best way to get someone on the ground full time with the company.

hi. If it’s just the VAT number you want There is Irish accountant firms who will do all the work for you.
I suggest you look at this option. They could be company address, company secretary, do invoicing, file all returns and you could make them a director of the Irish company.
You would transfer the goods ownership to the Irish company but ship stock directly to the EU from the UK.

Hi Thamus, We spoke to two firms of accountants in Dublin nd both said you may really struggle to get a VAT number even using their full bespoke service.
