looking forward to this…. can't believe I made the team again!!

I'd always a great day out with the Reps and some good friendly rivalry. on the go now since 2012 if I'm not mistaken

Tulfarris is a nice track but last couple of times I played there, it was very soft underfoot and that was during summer. So hoping it's in better shape now.

First of all let me say congrats to the top 10 players that qualified for the Jug Team. Secondly I would like to thank our Captain Kiith for the wildcard picks for both Fix and myself. A long year culminated with some unfortunate weather at the weekend but we have one final push required to retain the Jug and I have no doubt that we have a great hunger to win again against The Reps.

There are a few rookies on the team that may be a little apprehensive ahead of the match but all you can do it turn up and play your best. You have qualified on your own merits and playing well throughout the year so trust in yourself and your partner on the day. Never think for a moment that your out of a hole in matchplay as I have seen strange things happen in matches from time to time.

There are a few seasoned Ryder Jug players that won't be playing this year but that doesn't mean that they can't contribute so I would ask that if any other BGS player has good matchplay advice or strategy then post in this thread so we may enhance our chances of victory.

When you are shaking hands and introducing each other on the first tee, don't let go of their hand and maintain eye contact until they get uncomfortable.

In all seriousness, best of luck to all the lads, particularly anyone playing for the first time. You've all earned it.

There are a lot of very experienced match play players in this society who can give actual advice, but as someone who played it last year for the first time I'd say to the new lads to just make sure you enjoy yourselves and make use of your playing partner for advice. Just talk and play as a team rather than as an individual.

And don't panic if you end up down. Myself and Bobster were 3 or 4 down at one point last year and we pulled it back to all square, it's not over til it's over.

had a good warm up game on Tuesday and really looking forward to the match now. It’s been a few months since interclub and even the inclub match plays so will be nice to get a match under the belt heading into winter

I’d say the head Green keeper and the members were livid with you. I mean, the cheek of you to play football on the hallowed turf of portmarnock links 🤣

I missed the first Ryder in 2012 as it was 2013 when I first played with the society and I just got myself into the team at the last event back then. By hook or by crook I’ve somehow managed to make every single team since and always look forward to it.

Was paired with my good pal @benny79 the other day and we were sent out in the second group, pitted against 2 relatively new Reps in Adam and Craig. It was a real nip and tuck match with pretty much every hole having no more than a shot in it. We got to 1 up a few times but the guys kept getting us back to all square fairly quickly. I think it wasn’t till the 10th we got a bit of daylight and got to 2 up. Halving 11 and winning 12 & 13 felt like we had turned the screw and secured the point being 4up with 5 to play but the lads weren’t giving up easy. It was back to 2 up with 3 to play as we both made a mess of a good opportunity on 14 and even though neither of us played the 15th all that well, the lads scored a class birdie to make it interesting. A 4 was good enough to close the match out 3&2 though and get a blue point on the board.

It’s been a while since I’ve played Tulfaris. It’s a lovely location, and a really nice course design and layout. However the rough is very penal, which I’ve no real problem with but it’s just to thick and there is way to much time spent looking for balls so makes for a very slow round. I know it was a very wet few days but I always remember the course as being very soft and not great drainage. Found it no different on Saturday. They need to invest in some drainage badly because I’d say it’s borderline unplayable for most of the winter months.

Well done to the team, some good craic and banter with the Reps after. See yiz all in 2026

    Seve
