He's just been named in France's squad for the upcoming international break so it seems they're at least confident he'll be fit soon.

I don't think this Liverpool side is designed to sit in a low block. It might look frustratingly easy, but to sit in a low block and absorb constant pressure takes a lot of defensive awareness and practice of playing in those situations. One defensive lapse from someone and the whole thing gets undone.

Liverpools full backs are more attack orientatied, I wouldn't trust either of them to sit deep and defend resolutely in a defensive block. Konate is also prone to defensive lapses. It might work with a ball 4 of Gomez, Konate, VvD and Robertson, but i can't see that happening.

Sides like Liverpool best form of defensive is attack! I see a poster has already alluded to it, but something like the City set up and that 4222 is what I'd go with this weekend. This would give them the additional body in midfield to ease the pressure, without taking away too much attacking emphasis.

the 4222 was a disaster against place.

need to get grav, mac and szobo back together in the middle imo. Do what worked last year.

I was speaking in jest really.

That said, they did it to pretty good effect against City last year at the Etihad in the second half.

It's a lot easier to coach a low block than a fluid possession based offensive approach. It's good to have both in the locker though.

One of the very few YouTube "broadcasts" I can watch. Love his analysis. And it's generally unbiased.

If anyone has A Slots email address fire that onto him

So, does Slot keep drilling the players until they can function properly in the system or does he create a new system that accommodates those expensive players?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,887 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Thats the dilemma really. We can see Slot doesn't yet know how to set this team up. But he's one of the most tactical astute managers around, so I'm sure he'll figure it out. We just have to show a little patience.

He really is so injury prone for a keeper. Let's see how good mamardashvilli is.

We either trust Arne or we don't. His track record, including last season, suggest he knows what he's doing, and FSG seem to believe that too.

Let's leave him at it. There is a chance that the bedding in period that we thought would happen last year may come this year instead, given the change in playing personnel.

In Arne we trust, don't panic lads!

Joyce says Ekitike is back in training today ahead of the Chelsea game

The last 90 minutes of football we played really well was against Spurs in April 27th when we needed to win that day to win the league at Anfield.

Before that though we had worrying league performances:

April 20th - 1-0 win against Leicester that should have been an easy game. Trent goal when it looked like we wouldn't score that day.

April 13th - 2-1 win against West Ham that again should have been an easy game. Late OG by Robertson followed up by an 89th minute winner from VVD.

April 06th - 3-2 loss to Fulham. Was going to be a tricky game but after going 1-0 up we were brutal for the rest of the half and losing 3-1 at half time.

April 02nd - 1-0 win against Everton. Struggled to break them down bar a great bit of work from Jota.

Mar 16th - 2-1 loss in Carling Cup Final. Poor performance.

Mar 11th - 1-0 loss to PSG. We played better than we did in Paris but we didn't look like getting the goal we needed.

After April 27th the team went to Dubai to celebrate winning the league. After they returned:

May 04th - 3-1 loss to Chelsea. Poor performance with sloppy goals conceded

May 11th - 2-2 draw against Arsenal. Great first half making Arsenal look ordinary. Did not come out after half time switched on.

May 19th - 3-2 loss to Brighton. Threw away the lead twice and lost to an 85th minute goal.

May 25th - 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. The day we were going to be lifting the cup a dominant performance was expected with a win. Scrapped a draw in the end in the 84th minute.

So in about the last 18 games we have had 1 good 90 minute performance. We can say after we won the league against Spurs we were pretty much in pre-season but before the Spurs game there were a few games that we were struggling in.

Looking at that Adam Clery video, is it that teams know what we're going to do and know how to play against us more effectively?

I've said it before that those tight margin wins were a huge influence on where we prioritized spending… attack. Etiteke, Isak, Wirtz, even Frimpong and Kerkez come with attacking credentials. And everyone here was calling it over the summer that the defence was being overlooked. Not getting a replacement CB will be what makes or breaks our season IMO. Will the damage of having to rely on Konate every week be done by the winter window? I think, yes. You can't build an effective attack if the defence is flailing, and it's harder for those new players to settle in for the same reason. I do think it will come good but I'd be happy right now to still be in the title mix come January.

Good analysis. Yeah. I seem to remember Salah wasn't that great after the turn of the year where he had been carrying us a lot before Christmas. My memory of last season was that we seemed to gather momentum at the start of the season by getting wins despite not playing that great. We were scoring but I think the performances weren't too hot. Then we got into November and particularly the win against City really seemed to galvanise the team. That's when I really thought, wow, we could do something this season. As per the video analysis in this thread, we're not pressing like we were last year.

This season, we're missing Diaz who was a player that knew the system and was good at pressing. We've a lot of new players who don't seem to be pressing much. Salah doesn't seem to be pressing much either and is missing Trent. Something needs to change big-time for us to get back to that intensity that we had before. We need to settle on a first 11 and maybe stick with it for now. Wirtz, Ekitike and Salah if they're the front line, need to start working on closing down space. Szobo, Macca and Grav, we know can do it.

Good point. Yeah, it's a bit odd that they didn't at least try to sign one first choice CB earlier in the window. We know that we almost got Guehi and tbh that would have made it a great transfer window but missing out on him has left us in a precarious position with Konate looking poor. Also Konate picks up injuries so we could be down to Gomez and VVD and who covers then? Grav or Endo? Not good planning really.

People seem to be forgetting we also signed Leoni who looked every bit a first team player against Southampton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

Hindsight and all that but should they have sanctioned the Quansah move without securing Guehi?

I think we all felt at the time we were short once Quansah left with joe and konate injury records.

Yep, I'm in the trust Arne camp, so I'm not too concerned. But I do think he has a massive job to figure this all out. I think some big names are in for a reality check. This video has highlighted what myself and others in here have been saying — you can't fit Isak, Salah, and Wirtz in the same side and expect consistency! Not as things stand currently.

Salah does zero pressing these days; he barely even tracks back if the ball goes by him. Isak — it's just not his game, and from the No.9 spot, he should be dictating it. Wirtz, I think, can adapt, but he's way too lightweight and not aggressive enough as things stand.

TBH, I'm like others, I'm not sure what our best from 3 are, but its very clear, until we sort it out our midfiled and defence will continue to be exposed.

Slot said in the pre-match press conference that both Ekitike and Chiesa would take part in training today and they would see how they got on before making a decision about whether they would be involved in the squad for tomorrow.

One thing I noticed last match was that when Mo came on from the bench he tracked back quite enthusiastically. So he does have it in his game given the right motivation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,025 ✭✭✭Bacchus

IIRC when Leoni was signed, the overall concensus was… 4th choice, cup run, one for the future.

You would have to imagine it’s being discussed.

There was once incident in the 1st half against Palace, where Lacroix had the ball at his feet. Salah and Isak were blocking the pass out wide, which is what they’re supposed to be doing. But instead of passing it, Lacroix just carried it forward into the space, and both Isak and Salah just watched him go past. Not one of them made the effort to go with him, to either tackle him or close out another passing lane.

That stuff is unforgivable at this level, especially as we are such a risk taking side, simple moves untracked from deep like that can completely undo us, and its happening time and time again.

There's a slight irony in the fact that Liverpool spent years being astute in the market, going toe to toe against the financial machine that is Man City, to build a hard working, intelligent team full or aggressive pressing monsters.

Then the one summer where they splash the cash like no team has before, it looks like hard work on the field is becoming their undoing.

Six league gone ffs 😂😂 Too much social media is melting people's brains.

They beat the supposed champions elect Arsenal with relative ease. Doesn't say much for anyone else that are behind this team of no hopers lfc!
