YouTube says it will pay $24.5 million to settle Trump's lawsuit over the company's 2021 decision to remove his account after the Jan. 6 attack.

Jfc - the capitulation to a tyrant is sickening to see in real time.

Is that like googles revenue in an hour or something?

These numbers are like what they pay for a 2 week project that never sees the light of day.

CNN spoke to Michigan local councillor Kris John's said he spoke to the alleged gunman (who killed 4 and Injured 8) a week ago, and the suspect told him "Mormons are the anti Christ".

Trump has called the attack an attack on Christians. But there is some anti Mormon sentiment among Evangelicals too. Every time there's a Mormon in a Republican Presidential primary, like Mitt Romney a few times, they are asked to explain their religion.

Controversy over Trumps granddaughter Kai Trump announcing her clothing line on the White House lawn.

Well I will shed not a tear for all those farmers if they lose their farms given their votes helped to install an authoritarian regime in the US that is not just destroying their own country but is an existential thread to the world.

I would dispute this as a general rule. I’m sure it happens but certainly in the 90s and 00s tech talent, especially from the former Eastern Bloc, was jealousy guarded.

So, apparently this happened after the meeting between CFTrump, "Tattoo" Vance and the Democratic party leaders:

"Tonight, Trump’s social media account posted a deepfake video of Schumer and Jeffries speaking to reporters. In the doctored video, Schumer talks with Mexican music playing in the background, while Jeffries stands beside him wearing what appears to be a colorful Mexican sombrero and sporting a mustache with the ends waxed and turned up."

(From Heather Cox Richardson's daily summary.)

Here comes the shutdown. Like negotiation with addled fratboys.

We all thought that after 2020. That Trump would lose votes. He gained them.

In any normal functioning democracy that would hold up, but the fear of 'socialism' is so strong, so ingrained, and quite frankly, so ignorantly held, that when voting time comes around, nothing else matters apart from keeping "dem socilists' out.

So while many people say that they are not happy with Trump, the alternative, in their view, is simply too horrible to contemplate.

Can anyone explain to me how democrats are the reason for a government shutdown when republicans control everything. I saw Vance lying that democrats want to give billions of dollars to fund healthcare for illegal migrants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,569 ✭✭✭blackcard

Of the 100 senate seats, Republicans have 53 seats and Dems have 47. Sixty votes are required to pass the funding proposal so it needs 7 Dems to vote in favour of it. The Dems want changes to the plan before accepting it. Reps won't accept these changes.

The system is set up so that bipartnership is in place but ends up in brinkmanship to see who is going to blink first to stop a government shutdown with each side blaming the other

They're not responsible, but when has that ever stopped Republicans ?

I honestly think a shutdown might be needed to help many Americans see just what a massive clusterfuck MAGA is creating.

They're incompetent morons incapable of accomplishing anything. They know this and their allies control the media so they'll just blame the Democrats as opposed to doing a day's work or taking responsibility.

In the meantime, while the row over the Govt shutdown is grabbing the headlines, SCOTUS is to consider tomorrow whether it might hear a petition from Maxwell's lawyers over her conviction on child sex trafficking charges, as Epstein had an agreement with HIS prosecutors that no one else would be prosecuted in the case. The present DOJ is opposing the petition on the basis that Epstein's trial was on charges local to one court area in Florida and not Florida state or the U.S nationwide and therefor did not provide legitimate non-prosecution cover to Maxwell, who was convicted 2 years after Epstein died in prison.

They brought this on themselves as a group, but its also not exactly ideal to have those assets sucked up at firesale prices by the billionaires. Once they own the land, they'll never give it up.

Naomi Klein spelled it out in the Shock Doctrine. There is a strategy to use 'disaster capitalism' to capitalise on crises either natural or manufactured.

They will convert their tech bubble wealth into actual physical land, and then when the tech bubble bursts, the banks will get bailed out with public money, and the billionaires will be left owning much of the productive land across vast swathes of the US

    Ban billionaires

If the Democrats can stay on message and not get involved in spates on Trumps efforts to distract this could play well for them.

Republicans have been getting it in the neck on Trump`s Big Bill, especially in relation to health care cuts. Republican reps knew that was going to be a problem for them so those cuts mainly would not come into force until after the mid-terms.

The Democrats are now refusing to sign on until the present health-insurance subsidies for low income individuals that are due to run out at the end of the year are renewed and a commitment that Trump will not come back and do what he has been doing. Ignore it and cut a Congressional agreement on the budget.

Cuts to health care and health-insurance policies will effect voter all over the political divide, but from the Republican reaction to holding these cuts until after the mid-terms it looks as if a lot more of their voter base will be hit by these cuts.

Not only should the Democrats be highlighting the present health-insurance subsidies running out at the end of the year. they should be using this impasse to also highlight how the Big Bill health cut spending will cost low income families

I wonder would narrative been different if Robinson was covered in an American flag.

The marine who shot and burned out the Mormon church got very quickly swept away from limelight.

Aren't the two main problems for the Dems re the shutdown though, that

1 - The public traditionally blame the party that causes the shutdown for it, rather than look at the root cause, and,

2 - that if they do shut down, it basically hands control of the government departments to the President, who gets to decide what is and isn't shut down

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,099 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

I think that's the problem yes. Nuance is lost in these situations, especially in America. Trump's already lining up Democrats for blame and some typical lies thrown in about their demands. Enough people will buy it unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,254 ✭✭✭eire4

Yes I agree with you and your right there about what will happen. A good mention too of Naomi Klein's book Shock Doctrine which is superb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,948 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

Which is why I said Democrats should just stick to the core message and not let Trump do his usual by flooding the the zone with nonsense intended to distract. Health-insurance subsidies and especially health care budget cuts in his Big Bill, even while he has tried to disguise them by not introducing the full effects until after the mid-terms are causing problems for Republican members of the Senate and Congress now so Democrats should just pile more of it on them.

He can keep some services going but there would still be no wages going to the vast majority of federal employees as well as no payments to federal contractors.

I always have to do the little mantra when "Naomi…" is mentioned:
