Should be a even enough game against Liverpool as they also scraped past Burnley with an injury time penalty as well.

It mightn't be a guaranteed 9 points from the next 3 games so, but it's impossible to see how we don't get 7 points. 😂

because the club don't think Bayindir is good enough.

    It is that simple, imo.

Last minute minute winner tells me all I need to know.

We drew both games with them last season, under Amorim. So we can have some hope.

On paper Liverpool should thrash us. But they should have done so last season.

Anyway, I am far more interested in getting wins vs Brentford and Sunderland - if we can go into that Liverpool game having not been in crisis mode before the match, and at least put in a good performance, I will be happy tbh.

Sunderland will catch plenty of teams out this year. Very impressive and dangerous.

It's true our away form is not good. But this Brentford side is very poor. Severely weakened by the departure of 3 very good players in the summer and their Coach too.

We should absolutely be capable of getting the 3 points on Saturday

They're unbeaten at home, including a draw against Chelsea. Weakened yes, but I'd wager still capable of making it very uncomfortable for our lot.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

tbf everyone is capable of making it uncomfortable for our lot! but that is what we need to 'progress' away from. Brentford will not be easy, but still a game we should be aiming to win. We need to be getting results, good results, and performances vs everyone outside of the top 6, and then being in a position to get results on good days vs the top 6.

We should beat Brentford but those throw ins will cause chaos.

Facts are we've only beaten a 10 man team and a promoted team with a last minute penalty, I will carry on because stats mean nothing only results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Weren't you looking for progress and signs of improving performances in the summer?

If results are the only thing, then how you play, try to play or go about achieving those results is meaningly and improving performanes and signs of progress aren't at all needed.

Back to last minute winners by throwing the CB up top and playing low block counter football for 90minutes. Bring back EtH!

Yes actual improvements not XG, not still **** it at set pieces, unable to finish, awful passing, not much has changed.

Sure you want Amorim out too? This post feels like an attack for the sake of it.

    To give balance here

Arsenal Home - Would expect to compete but realistically they are a title challenging side and we are not.

Fulham Away - Always a tricky game and a draw when looking across the season isn't terrible for a European spot chasing team. It's frustrating because we created enough to win.

Burnley Home - Would expect to win and would expect to win by more than 1 goal. This should have been a more complete performance but Liverpool only beat them by a last min penalty a week later also. They have a style Burnley and plenty of teams are not going to enjoy playing them this season.

Man City Away - Still a level above us at this stage. 3-0 is poor result. Would have expected to be closer as they were not in fine form ahead of the game. But it wasn't unexpected to lose that but losing by 3 is poor.

Chelsea Home - Won and played well when we had a man advantage. 2nd half performance a worry once we went down to 10 as well. But 1st half when we had an advantage we actually made it look like we did for once.

The results in the league themselves are not terrible results for a team that will likely be trying to chase a European spot later in the season.

What is worrying is decisions that are being made in selection before the game and then how the players are struggling to carry out the instructions for longer than short bursts during the game.

Some other facts and stats for you.

After the win on Saturday, Rubin Amorim's win rate as manager in the league is 9 wins from 32, which is 28.1%, with 7 draws and 16 defeats making up the balance. A total of 34 points in 32 games.

Of the 9 wins he's got in the league, 4 have come in 5 games against promoted teams, and with the other a draw. So 13 points out of the 34 have come against promoted teams. The other 27 games have yielded just 21 points.

In terms of goal difference, we stand at -11 over the 32 games. The goal difference in the 5 games against the promoted clubs stands at +7. The goals difference against the non-promoted clubs stand at -18.

Based on that record, regardless of how well we played/didn't play or the in-games stats, it's not unreasonable in the slightest to suggest that winning at home after scoring a last second penalty against Burnley, a promoted team, is United scraping a win given our humiliatingly poor record in getting wins at all under Amorim. Because that's the level we've been reduced to.

IMO the trend of the stats IS showing improvement.

IMO we are attacking better, we are getting into better positions - and our execution is letting us down.

I think we played well vs Burnley and execution in both boxes let us down, but the overall approach, use of the ball, structure was better. I thought first half vs Fulham we were the better side, and the talk of them tactically out doing us is rubbish. I thougt vs Arseanl we were good and deserved a draw. Vs City, we were poor in key moment and when we looked good it was cause City backed off and let us have the ball. I think Chelsea only looked good vs us because we then did the same - backed off and let them have the ball - and they created near nothing. City did it to us, City tried to do it to Arsenal, Liverpool did it to Arsenal, Arsenal probably did it to us tbf.

And I dont think i am Amorim out, today anyway. But I am 'we have to start doing better' and 'i'm waiting for Amorim to prove himself'. He's no credit it in the bank with me. If we sacked him tomorrow I wouldn't be surprised or outraged. I think he is making errors within his own system and selection and those errors will cost him.

But I do think your (paraphasing) 'Everything is sh1t, we've only played sh1t, and have sh1t to show for it' is just a tad harsh on the performances!

I've seen multiple posts from you wanting him out.

Imo it's the same as last year bar the intensity which has improved loads but the same under performing attacks are still there, conceding easily from set pieces is still there, terrible passing still there etc.

It's very much ETH all over again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

i claim no responsibility or liability for my immediate reactions to line ups, and/or results. (!!)

It might be ETH again. Personally i think the brand of football he was attempting was unsustainable and impossible at the elite level. I don't think the same is true of what i think amorim is going for - but I am becoming less convinced my perception of what he is aiming for is correct, or his ability to work around the problems our player quality results in.

I'm also becoming less patient in seeing hopeful signs within our play and waiting for those to become more consistent. its been 10 months.

    Our attacking is better?

What is it, 1 PL goal between our new front 3, which includes 2 PL proven players that everyone wanted? I think that's right isn't it, 1 goal?

All last season we heard a lot about how execution was the problem.

Today, after a full preseason and 200m spent, execution is the problem?

One month left to achieve the monumental feat of winning 2 league games in a row before Amorims anniversary, yet despite the games including Sunderland, Brentford, Brighton and Forest, I bet nobody here has put much money on it happening.

I wouldn't go making bets here, nobody else is going to.

Even though we haven't been scoring tons of goals our play is light years ahead of last year. I do sometimes wonder do ye watch games, or actually ever played a game of football.

The patterns of play are vastly improved. Conversion is the issue, which i think will sort itself very soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

    Yes.

Cunha has missed a couple he should have scored.
Casemiro missed a (meaningless) sitter vs City
Amad missed a sitter vs Fulham (or was it burnley)
    Bruno missed a sitter.

2 of our 5 games have come against two of the best teams from last season. a 3rd game against the 'world champions'.

Cunha has played 3, should have a couple imo.
Sesko hasn't had a proper run yet - first start vs City was always going to be tough.

I think we are getting the ball forward better, I think we are getting into dangerous positions better. I think the players are failing to make the right decisions (passing to the open man out wide) in overloads, and we are missing chances we should score.

We have the most touches in the box… from a team that had hojlund not getting on the ball at all in the box last season. I think there are clear signs that structurally there is improvement but we need to see it result in goals.

I dunno how the eff you can see Amad blaze over an open goal, for example, and suggest that is NOT an execution problem. He'd have scored it if it was 433? He'd have scored it if Amorim told him to?

    Cunha vs Arsenal?

And, in general, I think our 'last pass' is still poor too often - and that is 100% execution. if you can't play it to the open man, that isn't tactical.

But whatever, we aren't scoring goals so therefor absolutelty everything must still be the same as it was, no different, just as rubbish as it was last season. nothing has changed at all.

Yes I think we have improved in attacking sense.

Would not be as confident as you that we will just score with ease soon but I hope you're right. Signs are there but felt like we have said that for number years.

I still think CM is big issue though. Thats the real problem and its hurting us. City was perfect example.

It's still maddening how we threw away that EFL game with Grimsby. And we're not even in Europe. Onana's parting gift. How on earth did we not sign a keeper in the summer.

EFL Cup is a great opportunity to blood some of these younger players like Orozco above.

We could give game time to the likes to Leon, Lammens, Heaven, Obi….even the likes of Mainoo or Zirkzee would certainly benefit, alongside some experienced players.

I think that Grimsby game is also staining the season badly for everyone.

We've not been great and there are considerable issues, no denying that. But there's also no denying that we're better than last season in terms of performance even if not results.

But as others have pointed out, even with the pre-season optimism, most predicted a loss to Arsenal & City, win against Burnley, probably draw with Chelsea and draw or win against Fulham.

So if we all had a crystal ball pre season and saw the current points total most of us would have shrugged our shoulder and thought "seems reasonable".

But that horror show against Grimsby, the fall out in terms of Onana, Amorim's meltdown and the general feeling of rock bottom that it brought about really left a sh*t stain on the season thus far. The nature of the City performance also, to a lesser extent.

If we'd spanked Grimsby 3-0 and then had all the same league results I think everyone would be a bit less gloomy.
