You have to have a winner on all lotto games, the jackpots have to be won. And as a person who once won 50k on a lotto ticket, there are winners out there.

You text to the CM is the same as buying a lotto game ticket.

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Bauer is a national broadcaster, Their suite of youth stations (I include Red FM/spin Dublin in that suite of stations) cover the nation and I can see them starting to merge because of money concerns (Pat and Claire don't have such issues). They own the 2 national commercial stations. The own 2 Dublin stations (98FM, spin I place also with the local youth stations) and 1 cork station (Red FM, which I also kind of place in the youth station area but open iffy on that one TBH).

They are by far the biggest Radio broadcaster in the country, they have no local stations outside Cork and Dublin the two biggest population centres (for Irish broadcast licenses, before anyone gets at me).

The way they say that you are entering across the Bauer network of stations, does this include the NI ones too?

I know they own the Downtown set if stations, so are you in the hat with those folk too, or do they have their own pot?

They say the "GoLoud network of stations", which doesn't include the NI stations. Those are still under Bauer UK's umbrella.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Even if they were I think Bauer would find it hard to run this competition anywhere in the UK.

There is a reason why RTÉ competitions aren't available north of the boarder… OfCom have stricter rules for such competitions.

They do, or at least used to, run it in the North. I know someone who won the cash machine or whatever its called in NI.

@batistuta9 and @NIMAN seems to be a weekly competition rather than daily. OfCom seem to have investigated the competition on a few occasions.

It must be raking in some amount of money for them.

Gone are the days or giving away 10 or 20 grand. Its usually up around 100, 150, 200 grand now

They aquired more radio stations (iRadio and Beat 102-103) and changed to a once weekly rather then a daily amount.

    This too shall pass.

It's a good while since it was 12,185.62 every day.

Isn't this a lottery and shouldn't there be a 'gambling aware' type warning every time a DJ announces details of this week's prize?

Agreed especially how much they push it on all the shows, with ads in-between plugging it.

Its almost like the Cash Machine is now the reason for the radio stations to exist.

Id say the amount of money its pulling in must dwarf the money they get from advertisers.

i heard from someone working in one of the stations they are pulling in between 5 and 6 mill a week!…. that could be just hearsay though.

As there's a guaranteed winner do they keep calling people till they get one?

Of course they do, otherwise how are they guaranteed to give the money away today?

Who spends money on a competition and misses the call?

This may be a dumb question but here goes.

I entered this once a couple of months ago, but never since. Since I entered I'm getting frequent texts prompting me to enter again, have received four this week already.

I typed stop in reply to the last one received, but when I hit send, I got that warning saying it was a premium service and I would be charged as such to send this text.

Does anybody know if you actually get charged an entry fee if you text stop to be rid of the annoying texts?

    From Bauer's site,

Q: What should I do if I want to stop receiving service updates via text?

You can opt out of receiving service updates via text by replying STOP to 57557. This is charged as a normal text message, usually around 10-15 cents depending on your network. (Some android phones do give a warning that it will be charged at premium rate, that is not the case for messages starting with STOP.) You will need to opt out after each time you enter the competition.

Listeners can also opt out of receiving messages by clicking here: https://oo.fonix.com/gl

    This too shall pass.

I entered it twice this time last year, didn't do anything and the texts just stopped after a while.

jesus and at 2.50 a text that's approx 2 million entries!

It's ridiculous that this isn't regulated, even to a minimum level of transparency so people entering it know what their chances are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,336 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

The people entering it are likely the same people you see in your local shop spending €10 they can't afford on scratch cards, who then stand outside rubbing at them before chucking them in the bin, cursing their luck.

But they'll be back buying more....and more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭plodder

Possibly, but there is something pernicious about this because some radio competitions are not money making rackets, and it's a real grey area separating the ones that are from the ones that aren't. Even a tiny bit of transparency around that point would help.

That's a fairly recent change, isn't it? They used to publish different phone /text numbers for NI entrants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

The change was due to the change to rules in the UK for such competitions.

I think some people aren't aware of how many people are entered in the cash machine. I know a couple of people down here in Cork that think it's a Red FM competition only not realising it's national between multiple stations so the chances are a lot slimmer than they realise.
