Wages if he turns out not to be the long term solution.

You're back in the same position, but with a high-wage player that you are stuggling to move on

But that doesn't make it a panic buy? makes it maybe risky.

Amorim likes Bayindir IMO. I don't think he rates him as a top GK obviously but he thinks he's worth defending and praising in press conferences. He won't drop him unless he's forced into it in. And tbh I think that's the right decision. Imagine if he was to drop Bayindir now, after two solid games without any major errors and then Lammens doesn't hit the ground running and you have to go back to Bayindir. What a sh*t show that'd be. Bayindir knows that Lammens is waiting in the wings so it might improve his game and he might turn out to be a decent GK.

Strange why PSG would have got rid of him then.

    Wages was a big reason.
They are cutting their wages costs massively and he was on a big contract, wouldn't agree to their more incentive based structure.
City happy to pay him though, and he's looked good so far (2 matches tbf)

Probably the same reason we didn't get him so. No point creating a new wage structure and then breaking it for him. City probably paying him double what we could. Official or not.

Eh Wha?? Donnaruma would have been an unbelievable signing! Guaranteed to save City many points this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,902 ✭✭✭Julez

It's clear INEOS are trying to bring in a much more streamlined wage structure, which is sensible and needed. Breaking that for Donnaruma was never going to happen.

He was reportedly on 500k a week at PSG, 250-270k "reportedly" at City... So quite likely he's still getting about 500k a week in some shape or form.

I agree with what you're saying but it's another thing that frustrates me about Amorim's selections. He has picked CBs who can't do this pretty consistently like Maguire and De Ligt over the likes of Mazraoui. Shaw and Yoro can probably do that job relatively effectively. Maguire 100% cannot, De Ligt (being Dutch maybe can?) Shaw if he was reliable physically would be ideal. Mazraoui seems almost made for the role but has hardly ever played right CB for us.

It's so frustrating when he has a style of play that he wants to implement but then doesn't pick the guys who are in any way capable of carrying it out effectively at WB or CB. Do we have to wait until after next summer when maybe we buy another CB and WB or two?

Besides midfield out biggest current problem is stocking the "back 5" positions with overly safe (and by safe I mean not in any way safe whatsoever) and defensive options.

I'd be much happier with poor results and performances watching the WBs camped in the opposition half with the wide CBs pushed way up also. I don't know if half implementing the system while still being rubbish is the best way to go unless he is 100% certain that he will be given the time needed to do it exclusively his way.

boring night anyway. last time we had so few games moyes was sacked for not getting us into europe. the following season LVG lost to mk dons in 2nd round of league cup.

Can’t say I agree. Even in his better performances this year, Bayindir has had shakey moments. Add the big mistakes like Arsenal and Burnley. His best contributions have been some nice long passes.

Should be favourites against Brentford and Sunderland before the Liverpool game. Good opportunity to start Lammens if he’s up to it.

It's a shame that Casemiro went off at the weekend and it went from very comfortable to very tight.

If we got a 3rd goal or were down to half an hour left if have given Lammens an appearance.

It'll be interesting to see where/when he gets his opportunity now with the League Cup avenue gone.

I can't imagine RA subbing Lammens on during a match just for the hell of it, that would be insane!

with lammens, i think the only way he gets in is if bayindir has a shocker.

we should all hope lammens doesn't play this season. its means bayindir has been solid.

but it begs the question…why was he signed?

re casemiro, i'm happy he is suspended. means amorim needs to make a change there at the weekend. i presume he goes with ugarte cos mainoo has been frozen out. ~75 mins in the league this season.

he will force a move in jan i think with an eye on world cup (if amorim lasts that long).

Lammens was a long term signing. Some reports they were going to sign him and loan him out as others were sniffing about this summer. Plans changed to keep him most likely when they decided to get rid of Onana.

i've been trying to make sense of this but cant. all things going as planned, per opta should we be last? given we have had the hardest start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,008 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

    Let's go positive,

We've had the hardest run in the first 5 games in the PL this year compared to any other team.

Top of the league by 14 with most shots taken.

Arguments to be made of games gone.

We should see a upturn in results.

(Grimsby result has stained it no doubt)

For a top 4/6 finish we are OK. Got the main heavy hitters out early.

Win the next 2 games against Brentford and Sunderland and things look different.

This is the gap where points can be made, we knew that when the fixture list came out.

We'll beat Brentford. Sunderland a bit more tricky, they've done well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,008 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Beat those 2 then don't see why we couldn't out some past pool, they've looked leaky in defence. 3 weeks away though so let's see how we do.

Next 2 games are a must win for us v Brentford & Sunderland. Liverpool for me will be far too strong for us and I’m not expecting much from that - just hoping for a good performance and not get a hiding.

Love to see the new keeper being brought in Saturday to blood him in. Hopefully a time of stabilisation that we can kick off a good run of wins and pull out of a mid-table squeeze with a large bunch of teams.

    Better Born Lucky Than Rich.

We haven't had a good away performance. All 3 have been dreadful. So I wouldn't be making any presumptions about beating Brentford.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,262 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

We usually play well against the better teams and flop against the so called weaker teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,301 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Amorim hasn't won two games on the bounce yet so it does seem to be a bit optimistic to be saying we'll beat Brentford and Sunderland for the elusive treble!

On paper, they're both winnable. It would create some much needed momentum as well and more than likely have us up to about 5th/6th in the table.

They shouldn't be massive games, but two wins would be absolutely massive. Amorim needs to get some momentum going.

I would imagine we'll play well for periods in both the Brenford and Sunderland games but at some stage the game will shift and we will struggle.

I think we'll win 1 and draw 1 and then put in another decent showing against Liverpool but likely lose.

We'll be no futher on at the end of that run than we are now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,607 ✭✭✭kerplun k

Not often I’d say this, but Sunderland look really good this season. Full of energy. they’re definitely not a side to underestimate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,777 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Ah lads stop 😂 Beating Liverpool? Comfortable wins against Brentford and Sunderland (who are playing well)

We beat 10 man Chelsea in the first half then looked awful the 2nd half with 10 each, we scraped by promoted Burnley and drew with Fulham, lost to Grimsby ffs.

    Fair play for the positivity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,468 ✭✭✭FrankN1

We definitely didn't scrap past Burnley, we should have won that 4.0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,736 ✭✭✭✭JRant

We'll win our next 2 games provided the opposition have no shots on target as we currently have a keeper that doesn't like to make any type of save for a shot on target.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,603 ✭✭✭randd1

The big worry for me is the near complete inability to create clear cut scoring chances.

You have to find some way of getting your front men in the game, and the Amorim system doesn't seem to be doing that. Sesko has basically been a passenger in his appearances to date, much in the same way Hojlund and Zirkzee were last year in the same system.

    So far this season, our goals are;

    • Arsenal - No goal scored
    • Fulham - 1) Own goal, cross from a corner.
    • Grimsby - 1) Quality finish from Mbuemo. 2) Maguire, header from corner.
    • Burnley - 1) Own goal, cross from free kick. 2) Mbuemo, good move and finish. 3) Penalty.
    • City - No goal scored.
    • Chelsea - 1) Bruno, good move, header won and finish. 2) Casemiro, high ball and header.

Bar Mbuemo's two goals, our goals this season have been penalties, own goals or from headers won from balls lumped into the box (not a bad thing though to be be able to make use of that).

It's pretty much the same as last season. It's not particularly creative, and rarely makes use of the front man, making him a passenger. And apart from the chaos of whipping a ball into the box, pretty ineffective overall.

If we're going to see an upturn in results, we're going to have to start seeing a bit more creativity and a bit more of an ability to create chances for the front man and get him involved from open play.

XG and shots on goal are lovely stats to say we're going forward, but when they amount to the same thing for the guts of a year, they show either poor shot choices, too many half chances and no real clear cut ones or poor strikers of the ball. Which we can all say we've have seen far too much of.

We create very little for the front players, and apart from Mbuemo's two, none of our front 3 have scored in the six 6 games this season. It's pretty much the same form as last season.

High XG and shots on goal stats aren't much use if you're relying on own goals, penalties and balls lumped into the box (75% of our goals this season so far) to get get goals while creating very little for the front three.

Of course the problem is compounded by the fact despite all that, we're -2 for the season in goals scored after only 6 games in, due to our midfield and defensive set up being more porous than a tea bag.

Simply put, going forward and going backwards, we're a very poorly coached team, and thus not getting the best out of ourselves going either direction.

And don't give me this crap about the culture of the players. We've got rid of a lot of problem players, and we've basically had a whole new squad in the past two seasons (Mazraoui, De Ligt, Cunha, Mbuemo, Sesko, Dorgu, Ugarte, Yoro, Zirkzee), and for the most part these are very good players and have been for their previous clubs (or in the case of Yoro, very promising). They absolutely should not be in the position they are, we have a better starting team and better panel than all bar 5/6 of the PL teams. But we're getting very little out of them.

And it's hard not to see the same thing happening over and over again unless the coaching drastically improves, the tactics change or the man in charge gets the boot.

When you need a last second penalty to win the game, after you miss plenty of chances and cough up easy goals, you most definitely scrape past a team.

Being the better team and dominant in open play for 90+ minutes doesn't count for much if you can't score and you give away goals.

We should have won by more against Burnley, but in the end as the game panned out we did scrape past them with a last gasp penalty.
