A month's mobile connection for the price of a temple bar pint!

Just to give an update, Sky Mobile delivered the phone early morning today using DPD, phone is SIM free and in-original Apple packaging. In-comparison my dad pre-ordered the iPhone 17 on Bill Pay with Vodafone using his upgrade and they cancelled his order without letting him know so no phone was delivered today, no email, no text message.

    Initial impressions of the Air?

A lot of reviewers say it's like holding just a screen.

It's impressive looking I give it that. Probably the most innovative phone Apple has launched in a long time.

I can see the next iteration housing a second camera. But maybe that'll be 2+ years away.

It's great, I already prefer it to my 15 Pro max, it's so much more comfortable to use. The 6,5" size is also not too big and not too small, surprised they didn't try this screen size before, sounds nice for marketing too. The battery life is holding up nicely for what I do, and the single speaker people complain about I don't even notice unless I am watching a video in landscape, which I rarely do because you can tell it only comes from one side of the phone.

I suspect the Air is a concept or test for the folding iPhone coming next year hence it wasn't called the iPhone 17 Air. I wonder if the folding iPhone will be called the "iPhone Air 2" or "iPhone Air Fold".

Vodafone have been useless with this launch. I preordered it once the site went live and my order got stuck.
I was told there was a tech issue with it so they didn’t know if it would arrive and also couldn’t cancel it even though it had taken the money.
Was told they had to email another team to cancel the phone which would take 2 business days.
Today the chat team told me that it’ll be delivered on Monday.
    or Tuesday….

I went into Select and picked up each phone. Having Pro phones for the past few years (13, 15) and the before that, the Air is the first phone in years that feel new. Maybe similar to the X but it really did feel like a new new phone.
The trade offs are tough for me though so as much as I want to hold and use the Air, I use the multiple cameras of the Pros too much to give up. Let’s see what they do with the Air. I agree it’s a testing zone for a foldable but I can see them running with a slab and foldable in future - hopefully with a better camera solution.

Probably not the best thread to be discussing the iPhone Air, since it's a Sky Mobile thread…although it logically went this direction due to Sky selling it ;-)

Perhaps best to continue discussion of the Air phone itself over on the Boards "Apple Devices" section? Anyone care to start a new thread there? https://www.boards.ie/categories/apple-devices

I'd be willing to try Sky Mobile again, it's been 6 months since I left with my main SIM, and the 12.99/month price does look attractive, however a 12-month contract does not.

Had to go to Vodafone and now pay 20-month for the eSIM for the iPhone Air which kind of sucks but I need the Vodafone reliability and coverage, shame I only have 100 texts and 100 minutes of calls instead of unlimited, but thankfully the most important thing I still have is unlimited data.

Shame that a 12.99/month plan from Clear Mobile gives you more benefits than a plan from the main company.

The sacrifices of eSIM only.. :( I'd go with GoMo but just can't deal with the Eir network due to their aggressive DSS.

The 12.99 is Monthly though, isn't it? No 12 month contract, but it goes back to €15 after a year, or it might not. I'm not sure what DSS stands for in your post, is it 'Decision Support Service'? Or maybe Dead Sea Scrolls? Some of my dialogue logs with Sky Support read like that, they might as well be in Hebrew or Aramaic.

No it’s still a 12 month contract, €12.99pm for 12 months. Then switches to monthly at €15pm. Interestingly, if you google “Sky Mobile Ireland” a sponsored post is at the top that says the offer ends in 2 days.

I don't suppose there are any providers out there that allow you to carry over unused credit on a payg monthly plan?

I made a comment about this in another thread regarding GoMo having issues so I'll just copy and paste it here.

GoMo operates in Ireland using the eir network, which employs Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology on some of its sites to manage 4G and 5G traffic on the same frequency bands. Specifically, eir uses DSS on the 1800 MHz (n3) and 800 MHz (n20) bands, which can lead to congestion and potentially lower speeds compared to dedicated 5G bands because the spectrum is shared between 4G and 5G users. While eir has deployed 5G on 85 MHz of the 3.6 GHz (n78) band in urban areas for better performance, the use of DSS on other sites, particularly in the 1800 MHz band, is a known characteristic of their network deployment strategy. This shared spectrum approach is considered by some to be an aggressive use of DSS, especially when compared to networks like Three, which uses dedicated spectrum for 5G on all its sites.

Not really, basically every provider has switched to a "Top up X amount to activate X plan for 28 days" offer.

Vodafone and Three let you top up more than the required amount for your specific plan so that you can use that credit to call premium numbers, or internationally, or send international text messages or use it for roaming in countries that don't have roaming included.

Three lets you use leftover credit for 3Pay, which you can use to pay for stuff on the Google Play Store and the App Store.

I have to smile at Sky"s 'piggybank data', which tells me I have 80GB saved. Er, I've unlimited data, what the f use is 'saved' data? 80 plus infinity = infinity. Now, does it mean that if I don't topup, I can horse 80GB until that runs out? Yea, right.

That being said, I regularly get much better speeds on Eir than on 3 … have both due to work and personal accounts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 770 ✭✭✭pfftdetail

Piggybank data can be used to redeem rewards such as discounts on flights, cinema tickets, coffee etc.. Alternatively if you have the 10GB a month for 10 euro SIM in your account, you can rollover data essentially.

Thanks for that, I never knew. After a lot of rigmarole and registering with Sky yet again, mobile number and password (why not just have a menu click on the piggybank page, having already logged on?), You get to a rewards page. Rewards look interesting, but it says I've zero GB or points, maybe that'll take a few days to update.

I've three Sky passwords now, ony two of which I remember, one was a written down one when I signed up at the Sky Booth, and which they look for first every time on the support line or WhatsApp. I've no recollection of what it was, I never got a copy of the contract, and there is no recovery mechanism, so getting a support chat is an ordeal to identify yourself.

Think it took a few days for me to update too, don't remember. Not sure if you need to have the same email or phone number as on the Sky Mobile account.

How has your Sky Mobile experience been lately?

Same poor signal at home in the sticks, barely connects but wifi calling via my broadband keeps me online. Away from home its fine. I think I'm getting the Dead Sea Scroll treatment after a fashion, I think the cell we're in can't cope. If there's a power cut and everyone fir miles around goes to their phones, calls, texts and data can vanish completely. I'm saved by having a genny to stay on broadband, until the nearby landline exchange switch's backup batteries run out. If broadband fails, I used to be able to hotspot a reasonable data rate when I was with AnPost, now it just dies. Somethings changed (3G vanishing?) and no one has an answer.

Anyone have any issues porting a number to sky? The final stage of checkout I just get a white screen every time.

I was with Vodafone and moved to three two weeks ago be the signal has been poor where I live so was looking at sky because they are on the Vodafone network.

Disable your ad blocker if you have one, I remember that being an issue in the past.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭NotShero

You can choose a new number and port your number once signed up. If it’s just the checkout screen in general, try the website instead of the app. I’ve had that white screen with the app before. If it’s still happening in a browser, try an incognito tab and make sure any ad blockers are disabled.

You could also switch to Clear Mobile instead, owned by Vodafone, with no fixed 12 month contract for €12.99pm.

Over in the UK for a few days and no service at all on my phone. If I search the networks I can find all of them but no connection to any of them. Tried restarting etc many times. Then randomly it started working for a few hours yesterday then went again. Absolutely no way to contact Sky support. As soon as my contract is up I’m changing. What a shower of useless c**ts. Never had any issues roaming anywhere with Vodafone. Be aware of these cancer companies offering service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭NotShero

    Have you tried this -

    Apple:
Settings > Mobile Service > SIM Applications > Abroad.

    Android:
Sky Menu App or SIM toolkit > Roaming > Abroad.

It could take a few minutes to connect after setting it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭medoc

Sound. That appeared to do the trick. I’ve been through every setting on the phone the past two days and no joy until I toggled that setting. I have mobile signal now. Thanks. Better help that Sky that’s for sure. I was in the middle of a sort of watsapp conversation but your solution done the trick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,561 ✭✭✭Glaceon

You'll need to change that back when you come home, otherwise you'll have no service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭NotShero

That’s good it worked. As @Glaceon said, just switch it back to “Home” or “Automatic” when you’re back in Ireland.

Will do. Thanks for that. Is that setting some peculiar Sky Mobile thing or latest iPhone thing? I never had to do anything like that in all my years with Vodafone and iPhones.
