Firstly, how exactly does the above relate to my post? Secondly how you propose we run these wish exams which is a very vague concept.

Trump is not on most folks radar on a regular basis or at all over there

This seems to be a point everyone is missing. People seem to expect a wave of MAGA loons shouting in your face as soon as you land.

Utter nonsense. Our customs staff don't go through your phone and social media history to see if you said anything wrong about any of our ministers or TDs let alone some random podcaster.

Equally we dont have people effectively imprisoned in the country because if they leave it will cost 100,000 dollars for them to reenter on their work visa. This happened last week where people literally on board planes had to get off when the news dropped. These would be people in very productive technical and high paying jobs.

Its a basket case, people need to stop white washing whats going on.

    Except it didn't happen.

The new $100,000 application fee for the H1B is only for new applications, not renewals.

And there is no $100,000 fee for anyone to re-enter on an existing H1B, or any other visa.

    So stop talking rubbish.

    Talking rubbish ?

It was so haphazardly delivered we had senior execs cancelling travel left right and centre.

And there was people abandoning planes on the west coast for fear of not getting back in

What's the point in lying ? White washing how abysmal this regime are at planning, implementing and communicating any changes they do. A fools game.

Any reasonable person can see theyre idiots and malicious ones at that.

Again, why lie and say this wasn't utter chaos ?

It's not illegal to insult a person in Germany or write a bad review of a hotel.

Source: Me. I live in Germany.

Business owners can ask that a bad review is taken down. If it's not, they can threaten to sue. So a lot of review places take them down automatically because the publisher is held liable in Germany. In the civil case of libel, the site it's on would have to prove that the review is accurate.

It is not a criminal act to leave a bad review. The police will not be coming for you. You will not be arrested. You will not be brought in front of a judge. It's not illegal in the slightest.

A workaround that a lot of people use for leaving reviews is to say "My original review was removed at the request of the business". That gets across the point that you were trying to make.

Ireland has similar laws whereby sites can be held liable for the material that's published on them. But it's a lot harder to bring a civil case against them. Nonetheless, if you were to start spouting lies about someone here, you would find the mods removing the comments pretty fast, just in case.

This site won't be around in a couple of months, so you'll be able to go over to reddit where all the opinions are identical, as opposed to 99% identical here

I was banned from reddit for a post where I estimated based on UN numbers of previous Israeli incursions the amount of Palestinians would be murdered.

Israel surpassed my estimate months ago.

They can be prickly about criticizing Israel on the world news fora.

How did that happen considering pre clearance in Dublin didn't start til 2011?

Immigration pre clearance has been in place in Shannon since at least the mid 1990s, I don't know how long in Dublin.

It's only recently (maybe 2011 as you said) that customs pre clearance has been in place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭endofrainbow

Yes it started much earlier in 1986 in Shannon but was only available in Dublin a year after Terminal 2 opened in 2010.

As posted earlier here that I was going and was looking forward to it, came home over the weekend and had an absolutely brilliant holiday.

Boston and Washington are two brilliant cities steeped in history, two very different cities, great hospitality, lots of choice for food (Washingtons ethiopian food scene was great) great bars, great weather. If American history is your thing both are full of interesting sites and architecture in Washington is quite impressive, that whole American Empire time is fascinating.

Elephant in the room time, passport control took around 30 seconds, two questions business or pleasure? Address when in States? Usual ESTA process, social media is still optional. National guard in Washington yeah saw a few policing corners, reminded me of the guards around corners of Naples guns in hands and seemed to be wandering around saw very little in the way of crime and was all over the city, on subway in suburbs as well.

Government shutdown did hamper the trip but will happily will go back to Washington to see what we missed, Price was an issue and it's defo a more expensive country than it wss before though this may have been the cities. Alot less homeless and drug addicts than I saw in Vancouver this time last year which I found strange.

I'd recommend the cities to people and it reinforced my believe majority of stuff ya see online is grossly exaggerated when it comes to USA and whoever is the president at the time.

I lived in the US for a few years and currently live in a European country. I've worked with the same company throughout this time, an American company which in itself is pretty decent.

But, I've had some health issues these past couple of years, I thank God that they occurred after I had left the US, if they hadn't I would have 100% lost my job as a consequence of having to take time out of work and with that would have lost healthcare and with that would have seen bills absolutely escalate to the point of decimating my savings. Even though I am working for that same American company, I am on a European contract now and so they are governed by local laws, I would have been tough position if this were not the case.

    Minor quibble.

Amtrak actually do have priority over freight, but the problem is that having priority doesn't mean a hell of a lot when the lines are single-track, which is common for many of the US long-haul routes. They can't pass a freight train if the freight train isn't in a siding, no matter how much priority they have. And frankly, the max speeds outside of the Amtrak-owned NorthEast corridor and a few lines like CHI-STL aren't too different between freight and passenger anyway.

A relatively extreme example is my local run, the Texas Eagle. Going from San Antonio north to Austin is a tad over 2 hours. Not fantastic, but it's definitely competitive enough at rush hour that I've taken the train into Austin instead of trying to fight the bridge traffic. However, it's 3.5 hours coming back the other way. The reason is that the route is a single track line which is run as a one-way line Northbound. (UP runs the Southbound trains a little further to the East). There is just no reasonable way, even with priority, for a train to quickly go against the flow of traffic on a single track. Going North, the passenger trains just slot in with all the other northbound traffic.

To its credit, the US rail system is second-to-none at what it does and I submit highly under-appreciated. However, since most people don't ride freight trains, they don't care how much more efficient the US system is at moving cargo than the European ones or how many HGVs aren't on the road because of it.

I have very little interest in going to a middle eastern dictatorship so likewise my interest in going to a North American one is low?

I'm really struggling with this. It is a fault of US planning that freight doesn't subsidise passenger services in the US, so as wasted potential is probably is second to none.

    Two views on this.

The train to Gillete Stadium outside of boston is 35 miles but takes 2 hours because the train takes freight tracks and the speed is limited.

My company ships about 2 containers a month from Long Beach to Kansas. We've been doing it for a year, the time once the train has started has been consistent within a 6 hour window, it's been very surprising tbh.

On a serious note the rate of Trumps notable decline could eventuate with two outcomes, either he becomes too senile to actually spew rubbish, or he gets worse and starts threatening to to cancel the US participation in the tournament. Although if he still does manage to stay awake he'll probably want to present the cup after a long rambling diatribe berating all the mean people.

Potentially a few European countries could cobble together venues if Trump does axe it. I think Mexico became host when Columbia couldn't as scheduled so switching host isn't without precedent.

On the plus side many analysts estimate that the USD could slide all the way to $1.30/euro by mid next year if the broad Trump tariff rate continues, so some saving to be had going west.

So now tourists to the USA have to pay an additional $100 on top of the local fee for entering 11 of the most popular national parks, like the Grand Canyon.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1kpnxvpgy2o

I thought a foreigner tax on national parks and museums was something that only poor countries did.
