Parkrun are acquiring the 5k app

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

    Will that change anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,898 ✭✭✭✭flazio

The answer from Michael Clayton, the developer, is no "for now". Parkrun official statement mentions wanting to incorporate EMS into the app, which would be a good thing IMO.

I suspect that parkrun merch advertising within the app won't be too far away. I've also seen talk of some stats moving to a subscription based part of the app, nothing definite though.

Anybody know if you have to pay duty & taxes on milestone tee shirts given that the have to come from "outside the EU" ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭Duzzie

no, you don't get charged. If parkrun don't send it properly and you are charged, parkrun will refund the customs charges.

Really? I know a couple of years ago I bought a coffee flask, a water flask and a barcode armband in one order coming to just over £80 and got stung by customs. I didn't think to bring it up with the parkrun shop because I didn't think it was their fault but it certainly made me wary to cap my spending on the shop site. I have since gotten milestone tees and armbands and a flask in separate transactions and not been stung.

    This too shall pass.

when customs charges for items from the uk were first introduced after brexit, parkrun purchases were subject to charges. Subsequently, parkrun changed their shipping to take account of the charges, the same as Amazon do, so there should be no additional customs charges. I have had things where customs charges were applied, raised it with parkrun and had them refunded

New parkrun starting in Swords this Saturday

I had spotted on the new parkrun tracking X account that an Ireland parkrun had been created. Event 3740. No official page set up from what I can see.

Incidentally Event 3526 which I understand was meant to be Togher Woods outside Portlaoise is still there as a TBC.

One more recent parkrun to note, Lough Head parkrun in Fermanagh about halfway between Cavan and Enniskillen snuck in last Saturday.

    This too shall pass.

To be announced tomorrow. Trying to keep numbers down for week 1 till they find their feet

They 100% shouldn’t say anything and use event 1 as a test event for locals. The parkrun junkies will be there in droves (a lot of similar names pop up).

I’m definitely a junkie too but the first event doesn’t interest me (might try and get the alphabet done though 🙂)

There's room for expansion, the youtuber Mark runs was at River Valley earlier this month and although I reckon numbers were inflated due to some "Recovery Run" event, you can see he had to queue to finish the course.

Mark has done a couple of other Irish courses if you want to take a look

    Malahide parkrun https://youtu.be/iZFzBPRZG0U?si=lQGmcpDd6uOFA3el

    This too shall pass.

There are times since I stopped running that make me a bit sad- the daughter calling me from one of my favorite running parks to tell me there is a new parkrun(Swords) is definitely one of them. The linear park in Swords, pissing down though, best of luck to the organizers, will have to volunteer

That particular run in River Valley was massively overinflated in terms of attendance. I believe they normally have 100 ish and that day had over 600. That said, in such a populous area, there's definitely room for another parkrun.

River Valley and Broadmeadow are also also very different courses. Some would prefer the hillier River Valley route, some the flatter Broadmeadow. I suspect that it's proximity to Dublin airport will also make Broadmeadow appealing to parkrun day trippers from the UK. Definitely room for both.

We haven't actually used it's name here by the way. "Broadmeadow Linear". A very manageable 153 people for the 23 volunteers to handle today for their inaugural.

Found out something interesting at Tourmakeady Wood today. They currently launched with a two lap circuit, which doesn't quite reach the waterfall feature in the park as the trail beyond the waterfall is still blocked after storm Éowyn, however once Coillte clears the trail they are considering exploring whether there's enough trail there to make a one lap course.

    This too shall pass.

I guess an issue with 1 lap courses is you need far more marshals, especially if (as it sounds) they would have to get creative to stretch it to one 5K lap.

is the consensus that going to an inaugural event is a bad thing? Not something I have done for a long time but did do first events in Fairview and Fr Collins way back. Both are local enough to me. I know 1 or 2 that goto most inaugural runs. Never saw it as an issue. Interested to hear from organisers what their thoughts are on it.

I think they are mostly worried that a lot of people will go (as they like to be at first events) and it may be difficult for a new parkrun team to handle large numbers. There used to be a challenge on the 5k app that encouraged people to go to first events. I think that was removed because of this concern.

Wilson's Index is still there, and I'll admit, the reason for my small trip over to Tourmakeady Wood parkrun was to get event 7 scratched off as I had got 1 to 6 and 8 and 9 so filling in 7 meant I have a streak from 1 to 9. I only did it as Tourmakeady wasn't too far away, I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to Northern Ireland or abroad just for it.

I suppose it depends on where it is. Midleton had a big turn out but Tourmakeady didn't. Brooklyn Bridge, one of the most publicised parkruns ever didn't even break the US attendance record. You just don't know.

    This too shall pass.

100% it's a bad thing! I had a small involvement with the parkrun in Midleton that started last Feb & 636 showed up for event #1. Totally unfair on a new group of volunteers who's nervous about their first event nevermind the issues it caused with parking, number of finish tokens available, congestion, impact on the other users on the greenway etc etc.

It now has ~140 or so every Sat which is very manageable.

No surprise, Storm Amy is causing some disruption to West coast and Northern Ireland runs.

    This too shall pass.

Visiting West Cork this weekend and I went along to Castlehaven parkrun. That is one tough mother of a course, and what a location, very scenic, loved it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,470 ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

Good to know thanks. I would have seen it as supporting a new event but happy to be put straight 👍🏽

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭diceyreilly

Thats just someone’s opinion. You do you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,128 ✭✭✭opus

More a statement of fact! (source I was there trying to help deal with the chaos). The last few inaugurals in Ireland haven't been announced to avoid such a thing happening again.

But like you say, you do whatever you wish, nobody can stop you obviously.

Those stairs at the end are just absolute cruelty, but they are a great group of volunteers. Knockanacree Woods is a similar type of course, proper trail running through the woods.
