French Open should be a signature event on in the height of summer, crazy scheduling to just throw it in a week before the Ryder cup.

Agreed, especially when it's at Le Golf National. They've actually got quite a decent leaderboard though with Koepka, Min Woo and the home favourite Ko

But its not at Golf National.

The weekend was sold out before the tournament started. Do you think the people who bought the tickets just wouldn’t have bothered going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,796 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I know, I meant it's great in the summer, especially when at LGN

Phrased that wrong, Sunday would have been alot quieter on the 18 green. Also the crowed was following Rory so if he was not there I don't know who they would have followed. People would have drifted off early instead of sticking till the end.

Saying that it really made a fantastic ending to a fantastic day out and organisers could not have written a better script.

I see dunhill links is turning into a liv outing. Blubber Watson, Dustin. Johnson and world’s best golfer gooch on the timesheet. Let’s hope for some nice cool winds blowing in off the North Sea to toughen them up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,796 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I've always thought a Dunhill style event here on three separate courses would be fantastic. It'll obviously never happen, but one can dream.

68 year old Bernhard Langer won on the European Seniors tour today by 6 shots. He beat his age each day with rounds of 62, 67 & 66.

They’ll be blown out of it at the dunhill links

Very rough first season on DP for Purcell.

Dead last after Rd1 in Spain and not a hope of keeping his card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,573 ✭✭✭big_drive

And it's also reduced further for next season, now only the Top 100 are retaining their card.

Interesting with brown situation. Injured and getting bugged around and slowing down the speed of play. Maybe needs yo be. Then birding all over the place to force a playoff. Can’t be good for this playing partners

So all members of the Ryder cup team can play in Dubai at end of season event no matter where they’re on the rankings.

I don’t agree with it as you should have to qualify for it that just get a free pass. Maybe pga tour might do something for woods to get into fedex final

Woods had more surgery recently on the spine so dont think he'll be playing anything competitive now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭Miley Byrne

Ho won't be making any more Ryder Cup teams either 🙄

I was replying to Trampas who was talking about Tiger in relation to Ryder Cup players being guaranteed their place at end of season events

Watching the India Championships, I'm struck by the background noise. Constant beeping of car horns, occasional sirens and screeching whistles. Must be a different experience for the players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,689 ✭✭✭Trampas

The sponsors will be pleased so far with their investment with Fleetwood , Lowry and harman the top 3. Just need Rory and a few more and they’d be delighted

I've seen one clip from that championship and also noticed the horns. India is only a few hours from where I am living and I can't bring myself to visit because of the noise. I had to take noise breaks from watching James May's show in India

    Irish DP World Tour Players

I just noticed Shane is now ranked 107 in the European Tour rankings. He will likely move higher than that by end of the season thanks to the exemption to the play-offs which he's getting as a Ryder Cup team member. But if this wasn't a Ryder Cup year then effectively Shane's season would be over as he's outside the 70.

I'm fairly certain this would be the first time in the history of the European Tour that no ROI player is inside the top 100. I know Shane could easily be inside the top 20 or higher if he wasn't playing predominantly on the PGA Tour, but it is worrying that there are no other ROI players in the top 100. Next best is Conor Purcell at 149 - hopefully he can get back through Q school and push on.

Through the '80s,90s,00s there was always a crop of Irish players on tour. And I know we have one the best ever in Rory(at No.1) from this island but apart from him, on the NI side there is just Tom McKibbon(ranked 49). We had some guys in the last few years on tour but it never quite happened for them - most notably Paul Dunne but also Gavin Moynihan, Kevin Phelan, Niall Kearney among others. Hoping Purcell can break through and some of the guys on the Hotel PLanner tour, but there doesn't seem to be any really strong contenders for future tour stars.

Whats the golfing landscape on the international stage looking like for Ireland once Rory and Shane move on? Do we have any absolute guns coming through? I ask this because I genuniely don't know.

As much as we often lament things on the PGA tour. It has been great the last few years to follow Irish lads who have a genuine chance of competeting week in week out.

Outside of McKribbin it's looking bleak for Irish golf. We don't have the golfers coming through like previous generations. Won't be long before we have no one involved in the Ryder cup.

European Tour in general is on its knees I'd say. A genuine victim of Covid and it never recovered - Needs a massive refreshing somehow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,535 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

I dont really think it is.

No it's not on the mad money levels that PGA and especially LIV are on but I dont see it on its knees. But tbh what has the mad money done for both, nothing IMO. Nobody watches LIV and PGA is as boring as it ever was. I much prefer EPT/DP tour events, IMO its the much more interesting package especially now that its evolving into the rest of the world.

I've long thought that the men either need a fifth major or scrap the US PGA. And bring in an Asian major or even say the Australian Open.

It's too US focused. I know thats where the money is but like I said PGA tour is boring. All college conveyor belt automatons on boring courses playing for a 22 under $3m win in front of 'mashed potatoe' crowds. I know I'm exaggerating but on the whole thats how I feel about it. This year even the US Open was cr@p to watch, horrible course. Which leaves the Masters.

I agree. And I find it interesting the amount of US golfers who are playing on the DP World Tour currently. Obviously the LIV refugees are taking the advantage of being able to play there and gain world ranking points, but that's limited enough, Tom McKibbin and Patrick Reed for example.
