I too got the email this morning that I didn't get by the second interview (which was on Friday just gone). In my case, the ~50 minutes total was no good.

I will go again though as I am reasonably sure I didn't give as good an account of myself as I could have had due to being sick on the day (I'm dosed up for the last three weeks from covid to a cold and now a chest infection).

And also thanks to the people in here with all the advice.

Thanks to everyone here for the advice it has been a big help. I had my 16pf interview last week and 4 hours later received an appointment for the medical for next week. I thought the medical was after the second interview. Could this be an oversight as I haven't heard if the 16pf was successful yet?

It sometimes happens based on availability, I had my medical before line manager interview.

So, this round of driver recruitment appears to be coming to an end, massive congrats to those who were successful.

I was going through this thread and my own emails in anticipation of boards.ie shutting down and also there being another round of The Hunger Games, aka driver recruitment, at some point in the future. I had applied back in Jan 2019 and had forgetton a lot of what went on. In the thread from 2019, there is mention of IR needing 100 drivers in the next 5 years with 70-80 of those for Dublin. Anyone know the status of that? Did Covid set this back?

Also, from my own emails, it appears that I applied for a non Dublin depot in Jan 2019, did the online tests but didn't hear anything about passing or failing them. In Feb and March 2019 I got emails saying that they had received 26000 applications and were processing Dublin applications and to apply for Dublin if I was interested. I don't think I applied.

    Didn't hear anything more until
September 2020 when I was invited to reapply which I must have done as was subsequently invited to complete the miniSCAAT, Rules Acquisition Aptitude Test (RAAT) and the Locomotive Driver Situational Judgement Test (LM SJT) My life was in turmoil at that point and Covid was on top of us so don't even remember doing any tests

However, in November 2020, got this:
Thank you for re-sitting the Locomotive Driver Situational Judgement test (LD-SJT) for the role of locomotive driver with Iarnród Éireann‐Irish Rail. We have now scored your LD-SJT and are pleased to inform you that you have met the standard required once again. Please note that your invitation to a face to face assessment centre is dependent on the Trainee vacancies available in any one location. You may have applied for a location with a lower demand for roles. When Iarnród Éireann‐Irish Rail are in a position to extend an invite to the face to face assessment centres they will be in contact directly

After that - nothing. I forgot about it and only looked into this again during this year's campaign.

currently they’re in the process of offering October to those in the pipeline from Dublin that got through to the final stage in the recruitment period that started in Sept 2024. Once those spaces are offered to those from the prior recruitment period, then they’ll move on to the current recruitment.
There’s plans for 3 classes, Oct 13 and 20. Possibly November. One may be regional. One for Dublin diesel, one for Dublin dart.

Thanks for the update, I'm one of those from 2024, had LM interview and then was sent for medical a few day later, that was March, so hopefully I'll hear something soon.

Can I ask where you got your information and/or how recent it is? I ask because there was speculation up in Heuston at the weekend that the recruitment process will be paused(at least for Heuston) for a while. This is due to the fact that the planned weekend GCD services have been postponed as the budget for those services is being re-directed into Infrastructure. The lack of these services mean that there are at least 9 trainee drivers for Heuston currently in the system with no space in the rosters for them when they're passed out. The implication from that is there's very little point in proceeding with the planned class that potentially had 8 more drivers for Heuston.

The Heuston links are currently full, with one driver due to retire in the near future. Another driver is due to start a job in an non-driving role & another couple are awaiting transfers, but there will still be too many drivers in Heuston than there are spaces on the roster. The annual review of services & rosters will struggle to amend or introduce enough jobs for everyone & I doubt they'll be able to just add more "spare" roles.

I'm not over on the Connolly side very often, so I'm not sure what their need for drivers is like.

that information was told to me last month from HR on a phone call when they gave me notice they’d be calling in a month and what to expect and again today when I was officially offered the next training class subject to reference checks etc and whatever last bit of paperwork they needed to do.

I’d assume the diesel is for Connolly then if there’s no room at Heuston. I’ll be on DART training anyway Oct 13th onwards.

Wait a minute, that can't be right. People have been saying for years, that the reason there's no weekend GCD service, is due to driver shortages. Yet now there's so many drivers in Heuston that they have to job share, the reason for no weekend service is funding being redirected to infrastructure. 🤣

Maybe time to let the lads transfer.

I do know we need a few more drivers on the Dart. A few drivers have gone onto different roles recently. Another few are due to retire in the next year or so and 3 or 4 drivers are looking for transfers. I did hear the next Dart class was happening in October which seems to now have been confirmed.

Yeah, up until last weekend, the speculation in Heuston was all about how frequent the weekend GCDs would be & how many drivers would be needed to cover them. Then all of a sudden, the initial story I heard was that the NTA didn't have the budget to fund them, which got refined into the money being redirected to Infrastructure.

Even before the postponement of the GCDs, heads were being scratched as to what business model had been submitted for Heuston as to why so many drivers were being recruited for there. Extra services to Galway & Carlow/Kilkenny had been mooted, but I'm not sure how frequent they can be on the single track.

It'll be interesting to see how the recruitment process pans out over the next few months & if they press ahead with more drivers for Heuston regardless.

As for the driver transfers, it's not Heuston refusing to release them, it's more the fact that there aren't any available places in the requested depots.

The last few posts seem like bad news for those who have failed to get through the 2025 recruitment process but still have an interest in becoming a train driver and are hoping for another campaign soon.

Since 2019 there have been several campaigns, 26000 people applied in the 2019 one alone, how many were trained and are now driving trains on foot of these campaigns. Less than 100? It sounds like there have been successful candidates who are still in limbo.

2nd time applying. I got through to the in person exams but was dying with covid on the day missed it.

Anyone have any clue or even a guess when next round of applications would be open?

Also how long is the training? What is the salary structure during training and straight after.

    Thank you
