Draws are done. Liverpool got a tough one, Chelsea faired ok. Arsenal is grand. I'd nearly fancy Spurs and Frank will be delighted with their draw. Newcastle have two very tough games but I think they'll fancy their chances of getting through the group stages.

I see Partey is available for selection against Spurs tomorrow night. Surely he won't be in the squad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,687 ✭✭✭adaminho

Why not? Legally there is no reason why he can't play.

Comfortable, straightforward away win for Arsenal. 3 points without breaking sweat. Arteta will be rightly pleased with that and 5 days to prepare for the visit of City.

Big elements of luck with both goals. Martinelli’s first touch and finish were both poor, but his second touch and pace were excellent and the keeper let the ball go through him. But Arsenal were always the more likely and luck almost always favours the better team.

Could be the spark that gets Martinelli going

Real vs Marseille is a very entertaining watch so far.

1-1 after 30 minutes. Both sides creating chances

Who's doing the commentary on Virgin, absolutely roarin' when there is any sniff of goal.

Carvajal clear headbutt on the keeper. Let's see what happens.

idiotic from Carvajal. Easy red card for the ref to give.

In a sea of dumb European handballs, the ref’s just given one of the dumbest I’ve seen. Absolutely insane call, and utterly idiotic that VAR didn’t set him right.

Horrendous decision to award Real a penalty there.

What an utterly shambolic, embarrassing, outrageous excuse of a penalty decision. Goes way beyond ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 528 ✭✭✭Apple Dumpling

Thats the biggest homer decision of the season so for from a referee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,958 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Unfortunately in the modern game, that's a penalty.

Cue talk of Madrid getting everything, Franco and the council paying their debt off

feels like that’s the penance for having to send off carvajal. “I’m really really sorry your player made it impossible for me not to send him off - here’s a penalty to make up for it!”

Except in the Milan game on Sunday a player had way more hand contact with the ball in far less a circumstantial incident and no penalty.

So no it's not always a penalty in the modern game. The modern game is still every bit as inconsistent as the old game.

Id say 8 times out of 10, that would be given as a penalty.

I have seen some very soft penalties across all the leagues in the least few years, so they are just part of the game now. There is rarely such thing as accidental handball these days, even when they are accidental

That’s a smashing start to the CL campaign for spurs with a tidy win vs Villarreal.

the second half of that Real game was incredibly dull. Then you see the Juve result

    Juve/Dortmund was great fun.

Athletico need to slow this down for 10 minutes or so or it could get very ugly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,344 ✭✭✭IrishOwl...

That cant be a peno...no way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,739 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

At least it wasn't dragged out anyway

ya, although the decision was ridiculous in the first place. Its actually a good example of why VAR was brought in the first. Ref makes an obvious mistake, VAR gets him to quickly overturn it. Quickly move on.
