Apologies, I had a post all typed up and then my laptop crashed. Thankfully, I took a screenshot before things went wrong.

Other news this morning is that a UN commission of inquiry has concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Never mind individual countries, but how can the EBU be ok with this? Surely they know this is bad, and why (just like with Russia) is it only countries threatening to pull out that spurs them into action?

Glad to see Ireland was at the forefront of starting this reaction to Israel taking part.

I dont watch Eurovision, but its time to get them out. They aren't European, but are a nation where the majority of the population are happy with their soldiers committing genocide.

Hopefully all other nations will get behind the 3 countries taking this stand now.

And hopefully Uefa will grow a set too and dump their teams into the football wilderness until they stop killing their neighbours.

If the EBU announced in mid-December; "Israel stays in no matter what", you could see a raft of further withdrawals and the Contest would quickly become unviable. My best guess is we won't see them next May and the Contest will proceed as normal. Germany having a hissy fit and even withdrawing wouldn't really matter - there would be very little sympathy for them.

What about a little "alternative" Eurovision among the countries that stay out this year IF Israel is permitted to take part in the official one?

There might be 10 or 12 countries willing to enter by then.

A scaled back affair with a live orchestra - one night only, just like the old days. No flaming pianos or giant hamster wheels. Just live music making. Wouldn't that be nice?

The Spanish or Dutch could host it with the money they wouldn't be spending on the "official" event. Juries only.

Who knows, maybe even a sponsor could be found it help defray the cost.

You are on to something there. Personally I’d love it too and I’d be more likely to watch that and skip the main Eurovision because that’s the kind of Eurovision I’d like to watch. Im sure I say it at some point every year but I’d love a Eurovision where the song is front and Center again and not the staging or how controversial the singer is or how many Indra followers they have. It’s easily doable if all countries pooled their resources. Thst being said it won’t happen but it’s a nice thought.

Yeah, probably not but could be sold as a "Song for Peace" type thing.

    One can dream.

The other issue regarding withdrawals is…does this mean it'll now be more expensive for those countries that remain? Will participation fees rise dramatically? Spain is Big Five and the Netherlands is apparently the sixth-biggest contributor. Albania is in major financial trouble, an increase in participation fees will likely see them out too, and potentially others.

What if everyone leaves and starts our own Eurovision.

That would be my understanding, yes. If Spain, NL and several others withdrew, the participation fee for all other broadcasters would automatically shoot up.

I do think though the level of controversy would go through the roof if the EBU tried to keep Israel in despite all the protests. You could easily see a further five or six countries announce they were withdrawing in sympathy with their broadcasting colleagues.

Then we'll start our own Song Contest….with BlackJack, and Hookers!

    (I'm kidding….somewhat)

Or withdraw because their budget doesn't stretch to increased participation fees to fund the shortfall from Spain etc.

Naive maybe but between sponsorship and voting revenue the Eurovision must be at least washing its face financially. I’d imagine the EBU coukd be able to subsidise the every fees for the remaining countries to prevent any financial based pull outs after the politically motivated ones happen. At the least it could subsidise those countries that really can’t afford the increase.

The ESC isn’t supposed to be politicised but thanks to Israel it now certainly is. The obvious route is exclusion based on starting a war.

Technically the Eurovision Song Contest was very much meant as a political event. It was designed as part of the Eurovision brand as a way to foster European unity and build a sense of shared heritage.

    Israel isn't even in Europe.

If Australia can enter then why not all the Americas considering the European descendant link is probably what got Oz in.

End of the day so long as Germany wants Israel there I don't think it will make any difference even if 15 countries dropped out as I said before.

The Germans won't be retiring their guilt complex for Eurovision, that's for sure.

Be great if every country pulled out and left Israel and Germany on their own. Two genocidal nations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,809 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

They are. Australia have 3 associate members of the EBU, ABC, FreeTV and SBS. The Untied States have 6 associate members, television broadcasters ABC, CBS, NBC, and radio broadcasters APM, NPR, and WFMT

But Australians are nuts about Eurovision so it just made sense to invite them at the time.

    @tayto lover

Why are we stopping at Eurovision? Should the FAI and RSFF similarly pull out of the World Cup qualifiers due to Israeli participation?

I think we have already pulled out of the world cup with our performances. The issue is to leverage power to get Israel out not to sacrifice ourselves for a lost cause.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/opinion-eurovision-decision-israel-impacts-rules-6819243-Sep2025/

Johnny Fallon of thejournal.ie explains pretty well why the EBU can't simply kick KAN out.

His reference to the Russian broadcasters is a little bit inaccurate, what happened was they were found to be spreading misinformation, not necessarily found to be too close to the government of Russia.

I fully accept a miracle needs to happen for us to qualify for the world cup but where do you draw the line? If Ireland and Israel got into a playoff spot after finishing 2nd in their respective groups and were drawn together, should we drop out of the tournament?

Then do you also refuse to compete in any competition that has Saudi or Qatari participation due to their ongoing human rights abuses? The number of competitions we can partake in starts to get very narrow

If you want a Eurovision music fix (no more so than right now!!), I highly recommend the podcast/radio show ‘Radio International - The Ultimate Eurovision Experience’.

A new four-hour episode ‘drops’ (as the kids say) every week - usually Thursday afternoon/Friday morning. ESC songs past and present, news, interviews etc. It gets a booing-free meaty thumbs-up. 🙂

Any country committing genocide should be nowhere any contest. EUFA and FIFA should just ban them and save every other country from having to do what they should have done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,809 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

But if they are not going to kick them out, should Ireland pull out of those competitions?

Or is there one rule for soccer and another rule for Eurovision?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,690 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I think they 'will' be kicked out in due course and the situation won't arise. Israel is rapidly heading towards pariah state status : we're probably going to see the point soon enough where teams and individual athletes will simply refuse to compete against them. One would imagine they are probably the most hated regime on the planet right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,809 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I'm confused by your answer, a simple yes or no will suiffice

Is there one rule for soccer and another for Eurovision?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 22,802 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

Rather than become a pariah, it looks like they are going to level Palestinian land, move in and become rather powerful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,690 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Very easy for me to answer. If the Republic of Ireland had been drawn against the terrorist state known as Israel in the current WC qualifiers, I believe we would have refused to play them, even on neutral ground (the Spanish government this week intimated the same thing about their own national team).

So yes, the same rule for Eurovision and soccer.
