I am seeing water levels rising fast in local streams, rivers and lakes which were at a relatively low level throughout Spring/Summer. I never like to see high water levels in Autumn because of the risk of significant flooding during winter when there is less evaporation and more runoff.

A good example is the Clare River which flows into Lough Corrib.

    Realtime waterlevel

I'm about ~25km from you I think and can confirm there were approximately zero nice days since you left. Been an absolutely awful month so far

It’s been a miserable September. Hoping October/November will be low wind and low rain (even if the temps are lower).

I turned on the oil heating, 15 September is early. Did a bit of a job on my lower back muscle earlier farming and felt like I'd love a bit of heat in the house before I'd seize up with the cold🙈

My mam did the same the last few days she picked 10lb and will make jam at Christmas she froze them until then , also makes strawberry, jumbleberry, plum etc I think there's more around this year from the great summer we just had

I've the wood stove going this evening. Not a roaring fire mind, but was definitely needed to take the chill out of the air

The same here in Kerry and have had it a good few nights this last couple of weeks here in Kerry being so showery and windy at times, Autumn came with a bang this year!

Fire lit here in Meath, earliest I've probably lit it in September.

Looking back at a few of the last few years wettest I see is Mace Head 155mm in 2023. Here in Sligo we are at 104mm now after 30mm on past 24 hours. How high it goes depends on whether High Pressure late next week pushes low away.

Beautiful crisp sunny morning. Had a lovely run. This is what September should be like. Rain coming this evening so make the most of it.

We actually put the Winter duvet on last night, by a mile the earliest we have ever put it on. Yes definitely going to be a long Winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,673 ✭✭✭pauldry

No its Ireland. Itl be mild and wet in Winter itl get cold in Spring. Another wet night and up to 106mm for September. Yesterday definitely one of the worst days of the year here. Back to showers today before more rain later. Cant rem the last time I seen the ground dry. Late August?

Valentia got 189mm in September 2023. The highest daily total that Sept was 59mm at Mace Head on the 24th.

36mm of rainfall at Dunsany up to this point in September, not as wet as alot of other locations around the country and along way to go to beat July 2025 with almost 112mm of rainfall. If the second half of September remains very wet, we could get close to the July readings for rainfall.

I'm surprised to see that temperatures are still abit above average for September, I thought they would be below average. The coming week looks fairly cool at times so this slightly warmer than average anmomaly will come down.

Savage crop @Cluedo Monopoly did you get them close to the city - are you city based. Beautiful morning for a run. Skies not as bright here as earlier this morning. I was on the commute and was delighted with the lovely morning. Get home ahead of tonight's front I hope.

almost 2 weeks since I cut the grass since I've been away, today looks like the only window to get the lawn cut. Despite the sun this morning the grass is still kinda wet so I'm hoping it will dry up within the next few hours and give me enough time to cut the grass before the next system of rain moves in later this evening.

We're getting to that time of year once the lawn is cut today I'll probably move it to once every 2 weeks so only a few more cuts and that it will be it for this year.

No I live about 15 miles away from Galway city in the countryside. We picked that crop in a field beside a quiet country road. The blackberries are so big and juicy/sweet this year. Have another 1.5kg in the freezer already. Storm Eowyn ruined half of last year's crop.

It's blocked by the ridging high pressure so pushes up towards Iceland. If that high pressure were to break down and the jet changes track it could come our way, but it's so far out that it's impossible to really know how it'll play out.

Our house is bouncing between 20-21c Downstairs and 19-20c Upstairs with a 0.5c drop overnight usually. Solar gain and the thick Victorian Stone and Mortar Wall Solar battery raise the temperature during the day with a further Spike at dinner time lifting the temps back to the 21c Downstairs and 20c Upstairs in time for Bed. ie. The gas cooker, electric oven, Air Fryer etc noticably top-up/spike the temp on the Hive Graphs around Dinner time in the evening over and above the more gradual rising temp trend from the daytime Solar gain and Thick Wall solar battery transfer/release.

Maybe those of ye needing to turn the heating on already should be cooking at home more and eating out/Takeaway less!! ie. Save money on food and also on the 'Heating' bills 😂

The only reason my bedroom window is closed now for the first time since April is the giant ****ing 2 inch wide Spider that ran across my bare legs in bed the other night!! So now my bedroom is uncomfortably warm again and my bedside fan remains on overnight still.

What you don't get from the total rain stats is the consistency of rain days. The number of showery days anecdotally seems high to me, been a long time since I've seen a run of very showery weather, just when I was beginning to think "spring showers" were a thing of the past.

September 2023 was very unsettled though once we got the heatwave out of the way. I don't remember much showery days like this month, more just lots of frontal rains. September 2022 was unsettled mostly too. Both were the wettest Septembers in Dublin since 1976.
