What EV charger to install

Without knowing your houses suitability, what i usually recommend to people is getting a cheaper charger and let the car do all the smart stuff like scheduling etc if you want to do night rate. That way if you get a 2nd EV its better in my opinion and just program the cars as you want them.

Cheap as in less features, not as in poor quality. If you dont have solar all you want it to be is a socket really. Don't overcomplicate it.

Get a tethered charger though if possible, I just find them more convenient.

Your electrician can deal with load balancing etc

I have the BG sync untethered about 9 months now with zero issues.

I only charge once a week so untethered works for me, it's also a lot neater looking

Something like the sync EV in fokearn picture above. I think its the same one @Nigzcurran has above.

I just dont see the value in an extra 400 of the zappi for just charging a car, that could be a full year of running costs saved.

My parents have zappi but I have their cars doing the decisions so its wasted really

I happen to have a V3 Tesla charger, brand new and sealed in the box. Was going to install it as a second charger, but I won't need one for a few months now.

€535 from Tesla. I'll let it go for €400, so around the cost of a dumb charger, but with the bonus of it being a lovely looking charger and having a button to open your charger door.

When the time comes, i'll pick up another one for similar money, but our other charger (hypervolt) and granny charger will do for now. DM me if you'd like it. I'm in Dublin.

It doesn't meet the full criteria list for the SEAI grant. I wouldn't call it a dumb charger though, which is basically just a plug with zero features.

It does have schedule charging. It doesn't have built-in load balance so it doesn't meet seai criteria. Load balance can be added separately with a Tesla module.

I'd go for the Hypervolt. The main ones are hypervolt, ohme and zappi and they rank in score on trust pilot that way too at 4.9, 4.7 and 4.1 respectively. zappi have a rep for dying soon after warranty period. I have a hypervolt 2.0 about 4 years now. I don't hear issues about them. All 3 are good with solar. only go with zappi if you have myenergi eco-system and even then…think twice. Similar price for hypervolt install and it doesn't look like a urinal.
