Thanks I'll look into that one my parents are very high usage. Just looked they used 879 units in almost 7 weeks.

    I used 336 units in 8 weeks.

They don't have electric car or use tumble drier much, one 18 year old in house.

They use electric showers alright and I don't could that be the reason?

Electric showers are heavy consumption. Do they use an immersion heater?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭enfant terrible

No immersion just oil and open fire with back boiler for heating.

I have electric showers, gas central heating. I use around 550-600 units every 2 months. I have a heat pump tumble dryer as well.

If they're having very long showers each, it could explain it. Otherwise, I don't think it would.

Yes they have complained about high electricity bills for years but I didn't see their unit count till now, seems crazy high.

They don't even use oven much anymore.

I might get them to power everything off at circuit board and see if meter is still going up.

Are the lights in the house LEDs and have they many turned on at the same time during the day? What about fridge freezer? My parents' place have one of those American style Fridge Freezer, seems to be an energy vampire. How about dehumidifier? Do they have any?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,890 ✭✭✭Gooser14

Do they use a portable fan heater by any chance? They can use up to 3 units per hour.

I am with bord gais. At the end of the price increase email I saw this:

‘As a result of this price change, you've the right to terminate your contract within the next 30 days. Your contract will continue if we don't hear from you within this period.’

Does this mean I can change providers without a break fee?

Pretty sure all led at this stage, they do have big American style fridge freezer but I have one too. No dehumidifier.

Are they on mains water or using well system? A faulty well pump is the most likely cause of continuous high electricity usage in rural homes.

On mains now, I think they were on some water group scheme years ago.

My family home (1960s terrace council house) always used massive amounts of electricity but I just thought it was normal - knew no better. 1500 units every billing cycle, so every 7-8 weeks!!

Open fire with back boiler is the only heating system, immersion use strictly limited and controlled by my father, no electric heaters allowed, no electric shower. But my father refuses anyone to come in, so electrics are original (screw fuse board with meter in the kitchen) , refused smart meter installation, still on whatever plan they signed up to with the ESB decades ago etc.

Absolutely no reason for the sky high usage though. But two years ago when the neighbours either side got smart meters installed the usage immediately dropped to 500 units per bill. If you can get the wiring and meter checked in your parents' place, I definitely would.

    Cheers,

Funny thing is they switched to a smart meter around 4 months ago no difference

normally i'm on top of things, but i'm in the same boat. sent in a complaint that their renewal email didn't mention anything about reverting to std rates, but no dice - wasn't really expecting them to budge to be honest.

So i was able to get on the BWG Smart Day Night rate - over the phone, simple process

I was also able to put a payment plan in place for the arrears for the 12 months to next sept - this is separate to the monthly bill so you have to make sure you do a payment each month.

in fairness, the people i was in contact with by email or phone were sound - very good customer service.

    Yes.

But do we have to notify them of cancellation or can we just sign up with a new provider?

We need clarification on this do you just go to Electric Ireland sign up there or do we need contact BGE to inform them of our intention cancel the contract and move.

I am with the Energia deal from last year around Black Friday, in general do the best deals come out around then?

Or would it be best to jump ship for this BGW Smart Day/Night 18 Month fixed deal?

Electric Ireland showing up as 300 cheaper for me on energypal than my current Energia plan once the hikes are factored in.

Are EI expected to increase their 24hr rates in the coming weeks? I plan on holding fire for another 2 or 3 weeks but will take the 50€ early contract termination if the numbers add up

EI have said they are not increasing base rate prices this winter.

On the Bord Gáis leavers - there's no need to contact your current supplier when you're switching. The new supplier(s) handle all that.

Never changed suppliers before, But thinking of changing from bord gais to electric Ireland, Have built up some credit over the summer months, Does this credit transfer over to my new supplier? Thanks

Sorry for the stupid question. I signed with Energia in May. With them increasing the rates, can you switch away from them without paying a breakage fee?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 629 ✭✭✭duefrine

You get your credit back to your bank account. You have to request it after you switch.

Im assuming that there will be only 1 price hike for the foreseeable so who hasnt increased their prices yet?

Energia, BGE, Flogas have had recent price hikes while EI wont increase prices over the winter but what about SSE and Yuno?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 990 ✭✭✭gandalfio

Is that unit figure in winter or summer? Our bill today for 8 weeks mid July to mid Sept is 650 units. In winter it'll easily be 900 units.

Energia retention offer to existing customers is not attractive as expected. I was out of contract with them last week. Was on Dual fuel smart plan with them. Switched to Electric Ireland dual fuel smart 30 on the following rates

    Day 25.92

    Night 13.62

    Peak 27.65

Gas 8.15 will drop to 7.83 on Nov 1

Got a call from Energia today after the switch. Dual fuel Smart plan 26/26 with the following rates applying with price rise included

    Day 31.18

    Night 17.14

    Peak 35.01

Gas 8.33 Free boiler service included.

Needless to say i won't be cancelling the switch

don’t think so, I am fully expecting to be hit with the €50 exit fee. I did try and call them last Thursday and Friday in advance of signing up with EI but on both occasions there were 20+ people ahead of me in the queue on the phones, can only guess these were all people also unhappy with the price increases.

Ya think start February I think, have you a heat pump or charge electric cars or use tumble drier much?

switched off SSE after contract expired. was charged 100 early termination fee in final electric bill -

logged into the site and it stated i was out of contract on the 12th and did the switch then

ringing up Customer Care and they are saying they will get the bill re-issued and reverted.

i need to call up and do this once the final gas bill is issued too. painful
