They need to act now before it's too late.

It has to be financial implications guiding INEOS' thinking on retaining Amorim at this point. There is no other reason for it. The team's confidence must be on the floor and his statements in the media are always baffling.

This zealot approach to a system which doesn't work is lunacy and, to me at least, it seems INEOS can't afford to get rid of him. The lack of imagination when it comes to tactics is horrendous, his substitutions never change anything tactically.

It used to be a case at United the 'Fergie Factor' meant players in the team performed beyond their ability, that players under SAF gained greater confidence and some opposition teams arguably crumbled or lost confidence. Now the opposite is true.

There's a lot of posts saying how people wanted it to work under Amorim, which I find strange. I don't think upon his appointment anybody wanted him to fail, I certainly didn't. The fact of the matter is he is failing and there's not much to go on to say things will improve.

According to Sky the big wigs think the dross on display yesterday was not a 3-0 loss.....Strap in boys it's going to be long term.

My read of what was happening with ETH was that you had a forward unit including full backs pushing right up the pitch but in that unit you had a number of players who had simply no care for possession (rashford/garnacho), we got turned over and were left exposed to counters and those breakaway goals with the pull backs. I think those tactics would work better with players like Mbeumo and Cunha and Mount in the wide areas who won't give it away so cheaply and be more productive.

So, you play 433 with our current players, you're attacking with width but instead of Dorgu attacking the box and ballooning it into the stand, it's Cunha on the ball. And instead of low confidence Hojlund in the box getting no ball from garnacho, you have Cunha supplying Sesko, with Bruno in the no.10……it all sounds so simple LOL……

The big wigs are all in on Amorim. They don't want to have egg on their face. If he goes where does that leave Wilcox for example or even Berrada. Penny for the thoughts of Dan Ashworth….

Does anyone know if Amorim was asked to explain his Maguire for Yoro sub yesterday? What is this thing with him taking off defenders? He has made at least one defensive change in every game this season. I just find it baffling.

I thought overall we had been showing some signs of progress. But yesterday was horrific. A manager who is as tactically stubborn as Amorim is will not get anywhere. You have to be able to adapt, to mix it up, to try something else. It's a basic requirement of any coach.

I think Eddie Howe would sort this team out. He has Newcastle set up well, he puts players in the right positions, and he makes sure he has leaders he can depend on. He won't leave Newcastle now of course, but the Isak thing may have unsettled him and maybe he'll be tempted when the season is over, unless we're relegated. Because it's a matter of time now for Amorim, I can't see how he can turn this around.

16 prem defeats in 31 games with just 8 wins paints a very bleak picture. As much a i would rather otherwise I cant see this continue for much longer

On the Maguire for Yoro sub, I presume it was because they were 0-2 down and Maguire is a greater goal threat.

It was interesting though that Maguire was called upon before Zirkzee was…..

my worry is we just enough without actually turning a corner.

Would the mood at the club be 'ok;' heading into the International break in October with draws vs Chelsea and Brentford and a win vs Sunderland? I think so. But then we play Liverpool. then assuming you lose to Liverpool we are right back to where we are right now.

I really do want Amorim to succeed. I really do want it to 'click'. But I don't think he is going to make the changes needed to give himself (and the club) a real shot at it. And I don't think he needs to change his system drastically. But he does need to change the players within it, at least. And then hope for a bit better execution at both ends.

Will Lammens start the next game ? You'd have to hope he will.

If he continues his current record of a point a game / only beating promoted teams, I'd say they have to sack him by the November international break. 11 games in, if they are on 11 points then relegation becomes a real worry

Yes, but on a more positive note, we don't have that whole hassle of playing League Cup or Champions League this week.

Plenty of time for training and perfecting the system of playing.

If he is half decent with the ball at his feet I think he will, I don't think bayindir did much wrong yesterday in terms of saves to be made, possibly the first goal a better goalkeeper saves but he is a liability with the ball at his feet and his long passing choice is horrendous he put so many balls down on top of Amad yesterday it was awful

As much as I love Bruno, turning down that £100m in the summer has been our downfall. That money could have brought in 2 midfielders to play the exact roles needed rather than square-pegs all round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

imo we are likely to see the same 11 next week. and if we do get a player change, it will be Mount or Cunha coming in for Amad, or both for Amad and Sesko.

10 months of defending Amorim's visision, or what I thought it was, has done me.

But that was clear last week with my view towards what the line up was going to be. And it was as i feared. And it went as I expected.

Very frustrating that the only change he'll make in the system is to drop the main striker (from a team that isn't scoring) and playing Mount instead.

Amad to rwb. Bruno to 10 and play 2 of mainoo/ugarte/cas in cm.

If that didn't happen with no mount and cunha it'll never happen. So Bruno will be cm.

Fine, then amorim better coach him to track runners.

Probably just throwing it out there in the event it did happen then can say they called it…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,181 ✭✭✭✭Sand

Even with a midfield three, Casemiro is not going to be able to play more than a supporting role at his age. Ugarte is limited. Squad player at best. Mainoo is just 20. Most Premier League teams will think they can get at a midfield comprised from those players, no matter if its in a 2 or a 3. That said, what else can be done other than try it while we limp on to January?Hopefully INEOS are prioritising central midfield signings over everything else. Whoever is managing the team by then, in whatever system, they will need better midfield options.

Yeah and that's my point. If all that Amorim can do is bring on a lump like Maguire to try and rescue a game then he may as well just quit now.

Did we turn it down? I thought it was reported that the club left it to the player and he elected to stay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Amorim, at least, advocated he turn it down. Club told him they wanted him to stay.

We should seriously look at getting an offer for him in January, and trying to fund a couple of purchases - cause I can't see Bruno enjoying his time right now, or us being anywhere close to competing in the next 24 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,226 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Yeah as Mitch says, Amorim/United seemingly convinced him to stay. He said himself after the Europa final that if the club felt he should leave, he would. And I'd take him at his word.

Whether he'd have gone to Saudi for the mad money, I don't know. But worst case scenario we'd have attracted a substantial bid somewhere.

Chelsea have a challenging CL tie away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. While we have all week to prepare for our game against them on Saturday.

Remains to be seen if that will make any difference

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,713 ✭✭✭Caustic

Amorim saying to the press he wants to keep him and he is great doesn't mean he really wanted him to stay id say he would have gladly taken the money and an upgrade in midfield.

I've a feeling we were very certain he would go and based our transfer business around it and Bruno changed his mind.

Being a world cup year it's not unreasonable for a player to be under pressure to stay playing at the highest level I also read some reports Cas turned down a Saudi offer because it was a world cup year.

Hopefully they both manage to get to the final and the Saudis take them off us next year

"You're welcome to stay, but I can't play you in midfield and you'll have to fight for one of the "10" spots". Up to you though."

Of course, since Bruno is now a fixture in midfield, obviously the managerial genius told him something different.

Portugese manager is not going to get rid of or drop a Portugese Captain.
