It would be handy is if posters mentioning the post number actually copy the link the number has?

Created 2 posts because was doing on mobile. In desktop mode to get the link, and couldn't get to the link option on first try.

Switching to desktop mode will depend on your browser and how they name and where they have the option.

The link is on the timestamp of the post, Corkie.

I know but the post number is also a link with the exact same link.

What I meant is I couldn't on mobile desktop view, actually create a new link. If I was using a desktop I would have just copied and pasted the html of it.

The idea of a wide mailshot is unlikely to succeed.

It would take less than an hour to compose an email and send it out tobthousands of people. Why haven't they just **** done it?

Odhran's last post on the previous page said he was open to offers of help so maybe PM him and help sort out those emails.

If he can't organise an email campaign without outside help then that is ridiculous...

    It's a fair point alright.

Everything just seems to take an age - email shot, Vanilla demo, pay by credit, updating links on the status page, following up on all the offers of help from the community, an actual plan for the future etc.

It's no wonder really that many people are still on the fence about subscribing. Meanwhile time continues to count down on the self-imposed deadline that's been set.

I realise that not all of these things are entirely in their control, and that Odhran has other demands on his time and that Mike is part time - but it really feels like there's no urgency on actually getting these things sorted with less than 60 days remaining until..... what? The site goes dark? Is archived? Struggles on? We just don't know!

"But give us money" is an increasingly hard ask while these things remain unresolved and unanswered.

I signed up on monthly. I wish to change card to a reusable Revolut card - can I just go ahead and block future payments on the Revolut app and sign up again? Would the payment be restricted should I wish to continue?

Odhran's post which the other poster was looking for. See above.

Is Mike part time or full time ?

I initially thought Odhran said Mike was part time but then in a more recent post I thought I saw him say Mike was full time.

We definitely need to see a state of the union type message. This place is upside down with the snide remarks takedowns and utterly turning into an Uncivil War.

If this is the end of boards.ie and this is the legacy it leaves I got one won't be joining boards 2.0

A ridiculous suggestion but ill humour you:

Subject: Help Us Keep boards.ie Alive

    Hi [First Name],

We’re reaching out with an important update about boards.ie. For many years, this community has been a place to connect, share knowledge, and build friendships — but today, we’re facing a real challenge.

The costs of hosting, maintenance, and moderation have grown beyond what we can sustain on our own. Without immediate support, boards.ie may have to shut down in the near future.

We don’t want to see that happen — and we hope you don’t either. To keep the community alive, we’ve set up two ways you can help:

One-Time Support: Contribute via our crowdfunding campaign [insert link].

Ongoing Support: Become a subscriber [insert link] to help cover monthly expenses and ensure the forum’s long-term future.

Even a small contribution can make a big difference. Your support will go directly toward keeping boards.ie online and thriving for years to come.

If boards.ie has ever helped you, entertained you, or connected you with people who share your passions, now’s the time to give back.

Thank you for being a part of our community — we hope you’ll stand with us to keep it going.

Took less than 30s to write a chat gpt prompt for that. If odhran wants to send his login details ill send it for him as well

Would you be happy to have your email given to another poster? You can't give posters' email addresses to some randomer!

People are moaning about it and I just said if they think it's so easy get in touch with Odhran if that's the case and maybe tell him how easy it is. Maybe if people helped more rather than moan about everything things might get done quicker to help save the site.

He is the owner, he is the beneficiary, he will take the money if the site makes a profit. He makes money (whether it's a profit or not, I don't know) from the userbase. He is not doing you a favour to run this site, it's a business.

Absolute ridiculous attitude to think we should be running around doing his bloody job for him.

Do people want boards to continue? Yes. Is it the job of individual users to fix the issues with the site? Not unless it's a community owned site, which it isn't. Stop the grovelling for god's sake…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,619 ✭✭✭✭con747

Maybe the large debt he took on to keep the site going will just vanish so. Making money? I'd say he wishes he was! Maybe he will just throw in the towel because listening to what's being said I know I would be tempted to just close up shop.

Who's to know? Maybe the debt is to himself? Maybe he took a business risk and it didn't pay off. Maybe he just assumed he could do nothing and reap the rewards. Didn't people say that if you look at the accounts they have been taking money out in previous years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,619 ✭✭✭✭con747

I believe it was said there 2 years with profits of around 22K or 23K which I would imagine serviced the debt. Anyway I'm not going to derail the thread anymore so you can read his comments for more answers if you want. He responded to a post of your's about some of this before. Hang on now.

I get that you're passionate about saving the site (as are the vast majority of the people who are responding to this thread), but let's be clear on something.

It is not for the users to fix this problem or do this work. The onus and responsibility are on the owner and staff to address issues, manage communications, and hopefully keep the site as a sustainable venture for another 25 years.

Users have volunteered advice, suggestions and even their time (none of which has been actually followed up on yet as far as I know) but it's not them you should be complaining to for the state of things.

This is no longer a community website. It's a business that relies on and drives revenue from the contributions of its members - several hundred of which have now directly added financial support to it.

Things need to be done quicker at this point absolutely, but it's not the responsibility of the users to drive that.

Actually this post puts it a lot better than mine. 100% agree with all of this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,194 ✭✭✭corkie

@_Kaiser_ You do know that you can edit posts and include additional information? If the thread hasn't other replies your edits would get read anyway. Just thought I would let you know?

As Paid sub and just a user, I have suggested solutions to fix things and demonstrated that they work with my extension but unfortunately boards doesn't have in house dev's that can fix things. Suggestion go un implemented.

I'd imagine that the underlying issue with your suggesting solutions and showing that they work lie in the fact that they would improve users experiences of the site rather than generating revenue and if there is anything that we have learned about how boards has evolved over the last number of years it's that improving user experience does not have the same priority.

The last few years of boards reminds me very much of the turnkey investments episode of King of the Hill.

Yep well aware of how edits work - but deleting posts seems to have vanished a long time ago (or I would have deleted the one above) and multi-quoting with it (although I think there's a workaround for the latter). It also depends on whether you're on mobile or desktop as to how easy each option is - not a problem limited to Boards though… there are many sites (including retail ones) that just can't be operated effectively from a phone.

Either way though, posts drive clicks. Clicks drive revenue. Revenue drives hopefully the survival of the site.
