I think we now have about 4 "alternative Boards" projects waiting in the wings of cyberspace.

In a way it reminds me of the RIP.ie charging for entries controversy.

What the alternatives failed to realise was that the site only made sense if all the information regarding deaths was in one place.

Fragmentation of the market would make the project unworkable.

Similarly if all the posters on Boards are scattered to the four winds the uniquely Irish discussion forum experience will be lost.

The sensible thing to do is to save Boards.

Very hard to suppot something when very little info is being released about how the money that is raised will be used.

I agree. I want boards to survive. Hence why I’m pushing towards its survival. But it’s the smart move to be prepared in case.

I would gladly put the lifeboat on ice if boards survives.

It's a minority of mods that have ruined this site and has it in the position that it's in now. This won't change and for that reason it will fail unfortunately.

Thank you, I'm glad to hear that like me you want Boards to survive.

Maybe if the worse happens and Boards fails you would consider liaising with the other proposed alternatives to produce just one successor.

Absolutely. As long as the community lives on that’s all I want.

Hopefully it’ll never have to come to that.

But this is the closest to the apocalypse we’ve ever been and fail to prepare, prepare to…..

I'm here a good while and I've never had any cause for complaint against a mod.

There are rules and as long as you abide by them the mods won't bother you.

So you have no authority to be laying down the law to other posters what they should or shouldn't be doing.

Can you please show me or quote where I did that "laying down the law to other posters what they should or shouldn't be doing"

    • As far as I can tell, I never told another poster, what and how they should be behaving on the site?
    • Not a back seat mod, which is against the rules as well.

Telling Loughc self promotion isn't allowed.

Its nothing to do with you.

In fairness I don't think anyone should be allowed to promote an alternative to Boards either in their signature or otherwise. Just my opinion.

Only gave him a heads up, didn't want to see him/her getting site warnings @Loughc Just a bit of friendly advice.

Advice taken and signature taken down.

59 days to go before boards is gone. I hope everyone finds themselves a new home once this place goes.

Was just trying to help people find a place after boards shut down. But I take your point and I amended my signature. All the best for the boards rapture.

In case you didn't notice I have been critical of anyone who was promoting another website since this all began. If you think it was a dig at you then that's your problem.

Again I was not telling anyone what they can or not do here. But it would set a bad example, if a mod can have it in the signature and not others on the site.

But I don’t have it in my signature anymore. Not sure why you keep going on about it except trying to stir the pot now.

I was trying to help is all. I never had a link in my signature before boards announced it had 60 days left in the tank. Hand was forced in order to save some resemblance of a community before the lights go off here.

It’s gone now much like this thread has massively gone off topic. So maybe we should leave this here.

Am I missing something here? Was there some announcement about the site closing in 60 days?

There's the 59 days in the link to the current status - as such - but tbh it's always been unclear whether that is actually a countdown to kaputt or not.

    There's a lot that's unclear…

I was moreso asking because Corkie seems to have put a massive amount of time into the thread and into updating people as best he or she can, so i was curious about if they're an admin because they seem to be the only person willing to update people

Sorry to hear about the struggles. This was my favourite site ever 15 years ago.

I think everyone who cares about boards should subscribe. We should do everything we can to save the site. Put differences and problems aside until we survive. But I also think that if we leave it until the last minute to start discussing a plan B then the community will just fall apart and fragment all over the place.

I'm relieved to see some options are there and am grateful to @Loughc and others for setting them up. There's a difference between giving up to abandon boards now and just having something ready in case the worst happens. I know there are a few who have abandoned ship already and are badmouthing boards elsewhere but that is a minority. It's totally possible to be committed to boards and also want to make sure a "lifeboat" is available.

@elperello I thought that was a great suggestion for the separate alternatives to liaise and create one space. Plan A should be to save boards and plan B should be to get a sitewide consensus on one alternative so that we can stick together. We can't do that if we're not able to discuss the options openly and I think we need to have those conversations before it's too late.

In a year's time, which would you miss more? €50 or boards?

Not trying to point the finger at anybody but on the topic of promoting other sites - it was just one or two people's opinions here.
Any signature changes should only happen if the site owner requests them.

I'm not sure of everything said in every group but none of the communities I’ve joined are trying to take anything away from Boards.

What some may not realize is that the people running those alternative sites have consistently said they exist only as a backup, in case Boards ever goes down. Their priority is for Boards to stay active.
