Great win over Lansdowne today, hope some nice celebrations.

    See Barnhall beat Greystones too

Saw the first 15 mins of the Nure match. Well taken first try and they looked much sharper in the opening quarter.

My interest was with the first match where MU Barnhall beat Greystones 39-28. Our first league final win since 2013.

Congrats, always have a soft spot for Barnhall. Shared with a lad who played there for a year, few years ago. Hard place to go and win, although always thought they lacked skills and were blood and guts, but think that has changed.

Great win for us, streaming quality was excellent. Defended really well and lovely ambition. Lots of our Under 20s played and played well, we are bringing through alot of those, prob more than other sides as a good few lads retired

Wierd way of putting it. they took advantage of weather in first half and Nenagh had too much to come back in second half.

We're bringing thru a few of last year's 20s too…they've stepped up really well so far. Great to see young lads taking their opportunity.

The new AIL format has been sent out to clubs. It is coming into effect next season I am told.

1A, 1B, and 2A essentially remaining as is with a new 2B split into 2 sections (geographically).

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,000 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Good if its 2A staying as is and 2B/2C being split north/south. Like Midleton to Ballyclare for example, at the extreme, is 900k round trip.

IRFU announced first games theyre streaming live

Nenagh Belvo is first mens game being streamed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Steamy Beamy

Does it leave clubs in 2C with nothing to play for in terms of promotion this season though? Can still win a league but with no promotion at the end of it. Seems a bit late to be announcing that with the season about to start.

I was sent this from IRFU doc.

There is still promotion and relegation but the new split 2B is the lowest division

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Steamy Beamy

Thanks for sharing that. Makes sense for next year on but for this season would be interested to know if there will be promotion/relegation playoffs in 2C or will first just win the league and all teams go into expanded 2B for 26/27 (bar team(s) relegated from 2C).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 Limerick-Kid

I am told this season is same as last season. Team that finishes last in each division automatically relegated with usual playoffs, etc.

Where teams finish at the end of the season and are promoted/relegated is where they start next season except 2B and 2C will be re-named and merge to become 2B North and 2B South with a geographical split (most likely Connacht/Munster teams in one and Leinster/Ulster in the other).

What it does mean is that you could just miss out on promotion to 2A at the end of this season and then find yourself in a relegation battle to stay a senior club the following season which is harsh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Chirpo123

On the face of it, it could appear harsh.

You could also have a Junior club pop straight from Junior this year into 2A the year after.

Will mean there is no jeopardy in 2B this year & 2B/2C promotion relegation playoffs this year are dead rubbers even if played they have no significance.

But i suppose it's a one off adjustment year that is necessary to make a more sustainable year, clubs just have to suck it up.

The changes are decent in my opinion.

The no jeopardy in 2B is interesting. As soon as it is mathematically impossible to make the top 4 in 2B the rest of the season is dead rubber games for sure.

The outliner would be where Sligo would go, north or south division. Makes no difference travel wise over a season

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,000 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Fair Point.is trek to/from for everyone going to Strandhill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭RuPi

So if it was happening now, the divisions would be something like this -

North - Rainey, Ballyclare, Harlequins, Malone, Clogher, Navan, Skerries, Malahide, Bective and Monkstown.

South - Sligo, Buccs, Wegians, Enniscorthy, Clonmel, Thomond, Bruff, Dolphin, Midleton, UL Bohs.

As was said, a lot of travel still for Sligo but there would always be a couple it won’t be ideal for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Chirpo123

The savings on travel costs would be immense. That Northern division are all within 2 hours of each other, the Southern a bit more spaced out, but not many, if any overnighters required.

Not only are there savings on travel, but there are more Provincial derbies, which invariably bring larger crowds, higher gate receipts and higher bar takings - great for travelling supporters as well.

Savings For some especially in northern section but southern section will have plenty of 500/600km round trips. I always liked quite a few long away trips in a season attending games. Better than just local games all the time. Especially local teams within your province.

AAny more local papers woth previews/transfer news.

I see iefu launched league in donnybrook yesterday

Thinking about the IRFU proposals on dividing by Geography - i don't think they go far enough.

    Division 1 - 10 Teams

    Division 2 (North and South) - 20 Teams (Current 1B and 2A)

    Division 3 (North and South) - 20 Teams (Current 2B and 2C)

Division 1 becomes the Super League, clubs to be permitted to go semi pro if clubs want to go down this road but not a necessity, and there is still promotion and relegation between divisions 1, 2 and 3 and from 3 to Junior.

If they are going to go down the road of regionalising the leagues, they may as well do it for 2A and 1B as well and combine them. This will reduce travel costs for an even greater number of clubs.

Promotion / Relegation directly from 2 North to 3 North and 2 South to 3 South; Winner Up, Bottom Down, Playoff between 2nd Bottom and 2nd, 3rd, 4th as per playoff system now.

Winner of 2 North and South Play each other, winner goes up, loser plays 2nd bottom of Div 1.

Loser of 3 North and 3 South Playoff, Loser goes down replaced by winner of Junior Playoff Final, Winner plays loser of Junior Playoff Final.

Depending on makeup of promotions / relegations there would have to be some sideways movement between North and South, but this will be the case under the new proposals anyway.

That was similar to what Nucifora wanted and was firmly rejected by the clubs.

clubs fundamentally rejected plans like that and i would totally be on side of clubs. We should have lot more than just 10 clubs playing fully national league and we dont need regional splits for clubs ranked 11-30 in the country.

We dont need to try encourage clubs to go semi professional. Many clubs are paying players regardless of the level but trying to create a semi pro level isnt right

Having relegation from 2 north to 3 north etc isnt the answer and doesnt help quality of the league.
